Subject: RE: Rick is back on the air!! Tonight! 17 March 20 From: Duke Date: 18 Mar 08 - 09:10 AM Although I enjoyed the show very much, it was a little sad to hear Rick once again. I knew him years ago when he was single and we hung out together for a while. We had a mutual friend, Alan McCray, who had passed on and we enjoyed remembering him and his music. As things happen, we lost touch with one another although I always knew what he was up to. The last time I saw him was when David Rae came into town and I saw Rick at the concert. We chatted a bit, but I spent the rest of the night with David. I think that it would be a great idea for Rick to "appear" on the radio show every once in a while. Or every week for that matter. |
Subject: RE: Rick is back on the air!! Tonight! 17 March 2008 From: Peter T. Date: 18 Mar 08 - 09:45 AM thanks to all Mudcat listeners, it was fun -- and Steve has hundreds of hours of material. I was reminded just how long Rick had been doing the show, and the encyclopaedic range of his knowledge. And doing what he loved to do.... yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Rick is back on the air!! Tonight! 17 March 20 From: GUEST,Heather Fielding Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:40 PM You know Rick never wanted to record his show, it just wasn't his thing, and Steve never meant to record them, he just kept the tape running. We only have half of every show but it's so lucky that we have anything at all and I'm thrilled and thankful that Mr. Fruitman remembered what he had in his archives. Steve will have that on his website on Wednesday, he said he would and he's very good about these things. Steve told me after the show that he had perhaps as much as three hundred hours of Rick's show, he has it in chronological order but doesn't know who is on which tape. He is retiring next year and one of his projects will be to sort this out and transfer it to digital, so I think there will be more to come. Cheers, Heather |

Subject: RE: Rick is back on the air!! Tonight! 17 March 20 From: BigAl Date: 19 Mar 08 - 09:18 AM I was taken back about 30 years on Monday night when I heard the tape of Rick singing Victoria--in French no less--popularized by Garolou on their eponymous 1976 album release. Garolou was formed by the Lalonde brothers, Marc and Michel, from Cornwall. Marc and I lived together in Montreal in 1972 after we put together a blues band to play the only hotel in Riviere Baudette on Highway 2 near the Ontario border--"the last hotel in Quebec" as we called it. Marc introduced me to his brother Michel, who was fascinated by the fingerpicking I had picked up from listening to old Dave Van Ronk records in the 60s and demanded that I teach him how to do it. I still remember the smile that spread slowly across his face as he finally got it, his thumb alternating rhythmically on the bass strings while his fingers walked the others. What joy! In the fall of 72 I went to grad school and we retired our blues band, but Marc and Michel went on to great success in the folk idiom with Garolou. I had the chance to play with them two years later when they had teamed up with Steve Merritt and his touring circus wagon in Merritt's Chautauqua project in Alexandria. Great to hear the song again. |

Subject: RE: Rick is back on the air!! Tonight! 17 March 2008 From: katlaughing Date: 23 May 08 - 03:00 PM How kewl is this? I was sitting in my office working on jewellery while listening to www.hober.com internet radio when WHO do I hear but Rick playing his own "Rag, eh?" I have the Lifeline CD with it, but it's just neat that his music shows up like this, as well as those other Mudcatters who are on hober radio. Ta, Rickdarlin'! |
