FWIW, the copyright date is at least as early as 1974. That's the copyright date (Buckhorn Music) on sheet music for this song, as recorded by Marilyn Sellars on Mega Records.

I must say I prefer the version with the "pushin' and shovin'n crowdin' my mind " line to the law n'order modification about 'Cheating and stealing, ,violence and crime" sung by Christy Lane and Wanda Jackson.
I'm not religious myself, but have sometimes wondered whether the questioning of Jesus over his memory in verse two mightn't sound a little blasphemous to believers. Beautiful song all the same .
