Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,AlanG Date: 29 Mar 08 - 02:07 PM Can't make it 'cus I'm away somewhere in East Anglia. But I'm determined to get to the Beech one day |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 29 Mar 08 - 03:20 PM Alan, a warm welcome and a cool beer are waiting, Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: 8_Pints Date: 31 Mar 08 - 05:46 PM Hi Les, Sue and I plan to be there with songs & pipe tunes! Bob |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,AlanG Date: 01 Apr 08 - 06:25 AM I'm currently lodging at the Blaxhall Ship; good beer, good food and traditional music/song three times a week. It's heaven, but I'm still looking forward to getting to the Beech. |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 01 Apr 08 - 08:56 AM Where's the Blaxhall Ship? What's the beer? Can I come too? JJ |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Apr 08 - 09:16 AM Is that the famous Blaxhall Ship then? |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,Nigel Spencer Date: 01 Apr 08 - 09:25 AM Take a listen to this little beauty! Songs from the Blaxhall Ship See y'all tomorrow... |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,AlanG Date: 01 Apr 08 - 12:13 PM Hi John There's Abbott, Adnams, TT Landlord, Mystic Brewery, a local one and another I can't remember. But I'm sure the beer in the Beech is equally good. We had an exellent session on Easter Monday from noon to about 7:30. There was good music and some excellent traditional songs; one of the singers was the grandson of one on Songs from the Blaxhall Ship. There was also about 10 step dancers ranging for about 7 years old to about 75 and all were excellent. Can't wait for the next session on Thursday evening. And I'm getting paid for being here too. See you |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Apr 08 - 03:14 PM Alan, sounds brilliant. Perhaps we should get a bit more daring and have some dancing at the Beech. The Beech has had all sots of Dancing outside on Chorlton Green. But since the demise of Chorlton Green Ladies the inspiration has gone. Perhaps it's time for a revival? Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,Nigel Spencer Date: 02 Apr 08 - 12:14 PM Only three hours and fifteen minutes to go! |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Apr 08 - 12:31 PM Thanks Nigel. I ahve just checked with the Beech. Arsenal Liverpool will be on but not i the snug so we should be ok. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 02 Apr 08 - 06:48 PM Just arrived home - a tremendous sing once again! Thanks to everyone who made it so successful, especially to Les who makes it happen. Unfortunately I can't be at the next one but I'll be there in spirit! Cheers, John |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Matthew Edwards Date: 02 Apr 08 - 07:41 PM I'll second that John - a wonderful variety of songs and singers; many thanks to Les for bringing us all together. For those poor souls marooned in the wilds of Suffolk where they are forced to endure trial by traditional dance and song and hand drawn beer Les sang Harry List's song of 'The Light Dragoon' so let them know in Blaxhall that their songs are still much enjoyed. Oh - and Liverpool drew but scored a very useful away goal. Matthew |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Apr 08 - 03:13 AM Thanks to Matthew, Dave, Kate, Debbie, Phil, Rachel, Sean, John and Sue for songs, to Bob for tunes on the small pipes and to Cos who sang but also reconstructed his Brompton folding bicycle - certainly a first in any singaround I have been to. Thanks to Jimmy and his staff and to Timothy Taylor and a number of other beers. The next session would logically be Wednesday 7 May but who can tell? I look forward to meeting you all again Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 Apr 08 - 05:49 AM Another excellent night all round; sorry we had to push off early, making off into the murk with many the hearty chorus ringing in our ears. Killed a cat on the M61 which put a hell of a dint in the front of the car, but one less greedy predator for the local wildlife to contend with. See you all in May, when Nigel promises a song... |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Apr 08 - 06:58 AM Thanks to you two for excellent contributions. Don't bells on cats stop them from catching birds? |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 03 Apr 08 - 07:18 AM The hard bit is teaching the cat to ring the bell.... |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 Apr 08 - 07:50 AM Looks like the whole front bumper is going to have to be replaced - £100 + labour, so we'll cough up so as not to trouble the No Claims Bonus. Maybe we should have pulled over onto the hard shoulder and checked the name tag of the hapless moggy. Not a pleasant experience by any means. Meanwhile, I wonder, are there any folk songs about cats? Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOqiqBWAqcs Nice enough, though a bit flat compared to the Sweeney's Men original! |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Apr 08 - 08:06 AM I feel sure that "Guide cats for the blind" by Les Barker would be appropriate. Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 Apr 08 - 08:20 AM Make that Scullion, rather than Sweeney's Men... That's with Sonny Condell who sings it with Dervish on the above link. |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Snuffy Date: 03 Apr 08 - 09:18 AM NOBODY'S MOGGY NOW by Eric Bogle |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 Apr 08 - 09:56 AM And this: Nobody's Moggy Land Which seems nearer the mark actually, as well as being a parody of Bogle's most celebrated work... |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Rapunzel Date: 03 Apr 08 - 02:32 PM If I hadn't hit it, the lorry in the left hand lane would have. I'm not proud of it. I don't know what sickens me more - killing the cat or how much it's going to cost to get the car fixed. The singaround was well worth it though, and we'll see you all in May, driving ever so cautiously. Ah, the hazards of being a folk singer... |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 Apr 08 - 06:15 PM Sorry to hear about your accident, Sean and Rachel; I very much enjoyed your music and songs last Wednesday. Lovely to hear 'Alison Gross' and the 'Santa Fe Trail' - though I had to suppress a mischievous urge to follow with 'There's a Long Long Trail A-Winding'. Hitting moggies on the M61 covers some greatly differing experiences depending on the local dialect; to the north and east of Wigan moggies are small insects, while to the west of Wigan people refer to mice as moggies, but further south, and closer to Manchester and Liverpool, a moggy is a cat. Sadly your mog was one of the larger variety - possibly undergoing an identity crisis as it crossed the dialect boundaries! - and must now be a mog of the forsaken. |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 13 Apr 08 - 06:23 AM I have checked a number of websites and can find no football on Wednesday 7 May. So it looks promising for our next Singaround. Perhaps people with a sharp eye for football on TV could have a look where such information is hidden and see if I have got it right? Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 14 Apr 08 - 04:07 AM |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 14 Apr 08 - 04:55 AM Matthew - Thanks for the kind words & dialect lesson; believe me I need all the help I can get living over here! Moggies as mice - heaven help us! Mog of the Forsaken - like it. Just found this, which of course deserves a thread to itself: Snock - Hog of the Forsaken Cost to repair damage: £300! Spookily, the local cats seem to have taken a strange interest in our car - oo-er - |
Subject: RE: Nearly New Singaround, Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 05 May 08 - 03:09 AM Chorlton Arts Festival Monday 19 May 8. 30pm Upstairs at the Lloyds Hotel Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, Manchester An Evening of Folk Songs and Tunes mostly, but not exclusively, traditional. With a collection of singers and musicians many of whom sing at the Beech on Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester on the first Wednesday of the month. Cheers Les Jones |
