Does anyone out there remember this duo from the 1980s? I saw them at a lot of folk clubs and festivals. They'd played mainly swing jazz and there own compositions, but I once heard them perform O'Carolan's Concerto. They also played Fylde guitars - beautifully!

I remember seeing them at the Poynton Folk Festival. I was very impressed. After they split up, Howard Lees was a lot more visible than John Hobson. They used to do one beautiful slow tune. I think it was composed by Howard and had - I think - a title in Dutch.

They would appear to have made at least three albums:

Hobson, John: Hobson & Lees "Hand Made" (Caliban)
Hobson, John & Howard Lees "Live" (own label)
Hobson, John & Howard Lees "Magdalena" (own label)

I remember Hobson & Lees well - saw them a few times and I have one of their albums somewhere in the collection. The only song I can remember off the top of my head is 'Honeysuckle Rose' and that is probably because it is the only one I didn't like. I remember the slow tune mentioned too but cannot recall its name!

Joe

I used to be a big fan of Hobson and Lees...I saw them play at Folk Live in Woodford in 1989 and 1990. In my view they were quite unique and their playing pretty much unequaled on the local scene. John Hobson still records...goto www.johnhobson.com or google for his myspace.

The late 80s in South Manchester...I remember a vibrant music scene with Hobson and Lees and Isaac Guillory playing regulaly...what a treat...what would I have to go through to find players of that calibre now!!! £60 plus in a cold arena full of 8000 people! No thanks!

I saw them a few times, they were very good. There was one thing they used to do that reduced people to tears of laughter - they played "She was Beautiful" with the tune a semi-tone different from the backing, apparently they used to do this when playing in restaurants to prove that noone was listening!

They must have come from Cheshire way: Macclesfield? because they played a lot around there. John, particularly, was a terrific guitarist. I see he has a website with a couple of cds for sale.

Yup, they were based around Cheshire I think. Anyone heard their 'Handmade' album? Really is good stuff

Thanks Howard. Great stuff!
Here is a link to Youtube with the lads playing a terrific tune composed by Howard. It's a pity about the distorted sound but great to see these masters of the acoustic guitar.

To Howard:

Any chance of a reunion then? I used to follow you both religiously as a kid, on a quest to improve my own guitar chops. You might remember James Crawley, the promoter/organiser of Folk Live in Woodford? He's still around I think.

Used to love your version of sweet lorraine...I picked it out by ear from your Magdalena album when I was 16 and still remember it note for note. All the best, Richard.

Wow. From a sonic perspective the distance those mikes were from the instruments and the clarity w/which the guitars projected was amazing. Even w/all the normal distortion of tape the purity of sound cuts right through.

We in the States are at such a cultural disadvantage in terms of media...one would NEVER see something like this unless it was on PBS @ about 12:00 AM on a Saturday.

Needless to say the performance was/is brilliant. One hopes for a re-union and a tour.

We booked them twice at our folk club in Wolverhampton in the early 80s. Great musicians. I still play a cassette/cd of one of their live shows. Its the happiest music I have ever heard and still love it.

I remember us booking Hobson and Lees at the Topic in Bradford in the early 1980s.
We were very impressed!

Here is a Blicky to their Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6VhWWyHUZungOuG87jEDvQ
And I hope I remembered how to manually Blickyfy - It's years since I last did one.
If I haven't - I daresay Joe will fix it....
Quack!
