Subject: Chord Req: Norland Wind, again
From: GUEST,DonMeixner
Date: 28 Mar 08 - 06:21 PM

Hello All.

I have been chord pondering on this song for years. The melody lays about the limits of my vocal range but I'd still like to do it if at all possible. And could any of the Scots in the gang English this up a bit for me? Some of the dialect is obvious to me but some is very unclear. Not that I'd sing it that way necessarily but I do have this thing about singing in a language I don't know.

Thanks in advance.

Don

"Oh tell me fit was on yer road ye roarin Norland wind?

As ye come blawin frae the land that's never frae ma mind.

Ma feet they traivel England but I'm deein for the North."

"Ma man, I saw the siller tides rin up the Firth o Forth."

"Aye wind, I ken them weel eneuch an fine they fa and rise,
And fain I'd feel the creepin mist on yonder shore that lies.
But tell me as ye pass them by fit saw ye on the way?"
"Ma man, I rocked the rovin gulls that sail abin the Tay."

"Bit saw ye naethin leein wind afore ye come tae Fife?
For there's muckle lyin 'yont the Tay that's mair tae me nor life."
"Ma man, I swept the Angus braes that ye hivna trod for years."
"Oh wind, forgie a hameless loon that canna see for tears."

"And far abin the Angus straths I saw the wild geese flee,
A lang, lang skein o beatin wings wi their heids toward the sea,
And aye their cryin voices trailed ahint them on the air."
"Oh wind, hae mercy, haud your wheesht for I daurna listen mair."

That's how I remember it. The key I picked out of the air was Bflat, but A was not too low:) Yes, it's a stunner, isn't it?

I tried to lay hands on the album after my post, but I can't. However, I believe Jim Reid wrote the melody, as he has for many Violet Jacob poems. His album Wild Geese was my intro to her poetry- I heard the song on a Seattle folk show one Sunday afternoon and ordered it, transAtlantic shipping and all, the next day! Something I try not to make a habit of!

Those chords don't line up right right - sorry. Maybe copying to WORD will restore it?
OH is the pickup on the five chord.
TELL - I    ME- V    FIT- I WAS - V ROAD - I    ROAR -IV WIND is V
On the last line, the VII chords are with MAN and UP. The rest should line up with that spacing change.

Hector Gilchrist CD "Ingleneuk" also sings this, and he credits J. Reid as the tune author.

You're welcome Don, tho I just saw an error on the last post. There's a IV chord for the word ON. It's there in the badly lined-up first post.
And thanks Folkiedave. That Jim Reid CD is, I think, still at the bottom of a heap of CDs I brought home from work a few days after I reired - six months ago:)
