Subject: Beverley Beck Shanty Festival May 2008
From: ossonflags
Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:40 AM

The Beverley Barge Preservation Society has been working on plans to hold a Shanty Festival, the first of its kind to be held in the Town since the 18th Century.
The Society has been awarded permission from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to hold the Festival on the Beverley Beck Canal.

The Festival will be on 24th 25th May 2008 the late May Bank Holiday Weekend.

The Society has formed a Sub - Group and has to date contacted many folk artistes from around the Country and who have expressed a great interest in attending.
Many Boat owners have also been contacted from around the Ridings who have also made a commitment to attend.
The Beckside part of the Town where the Canal is situated provides an exciting venue for
A Shanty Festival, Seven public houses, a Leisure Centre that offers a Camping Site and facilities,
Community Area for performers, Towpath walks in a Rural Setting.
Stallholders and Business Groups will be welcome to take part in the Two Day Event.

On behalf of the committee I am very pleased to announce that the above festival will be taking place on the above dates.
This festival is free accept for camping. Although we will be receiving some limited funding we do intend to have bucket collections over the weekend to defray some of the costs.

Artists that have confirmed their support to us so far are:

•        Graeme Nights

•        Jim Eldon

•        The Young 'uns

•        Trim Rig and a Doxy

•        Hissyfit

•        Anna Shannon

•        Dave and Julie Everdson

•        Greg Stevens Boat Band

•        Monkeys Fist

•        Shanty Groove
It is our intention to have the festival centered round the Beverley Beck and the adjoining pubs will support our need for sing rounds concert etc.It is planned to have boats in the beck and also there will be room for stalls etc.

The itinery (TBC) so far is;

Friday - Hodgesons pub meet and greet

Saturday. - seen as Main day- singarounds and booked guests in "The Foresters Pub" evening concert

Dance group outside

Sunday. - All day singarounds at Foresters and another pub (TBC) Event on "Barge Syntan" late morning

Survivor's session; Hodgesons pub evening

Camping: £8.00 per night :- this will be at the usual site rear of Hodgesons were security and facilities will be provided

Please pm me if you need extra info or would like to book a spot over the weekend.
I you need to book a pitch for camping you can download a form from the East Riding leisure centre web site.

I will be updating this over the next few weeks

Publicity will be going around in the next weeks but we would appreciate 'catters informing non 'catters.

Looking forward greatly to playing. The Boat Band are always up for a canal/maritme festival. And we will guarantee not to wear blue sweaters or sing Blow the Man Down( I think that side of things will be well catered for by others). And the legendary light-heartedness, gaiety and joi-de-vivre of Yorkshire people will undoubtedly make this event a rip-roaring success.

Here are some links
Shanty Jack
Monkeys Orphan
John Conolly

Certainly wouldn't be the same without them.

What about a Yorkshire versus Lincolnshire Shanty Competition.

That might just tempt us lot to come over the bridge to support our yellowbellies.

Will you have a timetable of when performers will be appearing?
That would be very useful, as there are a number of performers I would like to see.
If I brought the family along (who would not be interested in the music), is there something they could do,in the Beverly Beck area (like shopping etc).

However, the time of day will be important. I want to see The Boat Band, Jim Eldon and my freinds Hissyfit & Dave & Julie Evardson.

I don't think my family will want to go to the Market in the Evening :-)

You can walk down to the lock and the river Hull and walk over Figham Marshes. Some times of day there can be interesting things. Have seen rabits, geese, swans, bats, foxes, deer, barnowls, kingfishers, herons, grebe, cormorants, sparrow hawk, a harrier, and one time pretty sure two cranes flew over. There is fishing: pike and tench as well as the smaller fish in both the Beck and the river.

Also, the leisure centre has a swimming pool.

The suggestions from Les are good and if the kids are old enough they could catch the train in to Hull from Beverley Station which is only as far from the campsite as you could throw a didgeridoo. The station at Hull is right next to the new shopping centre if shopping is there thing.

I am meeting with Capain Holgate on Monday to finalise last details. That will include updating web site and time schedule.

A couple of updates for now:

1. We have now added Hogesons as a concert and singaround spot for the weekend.

2. "Roaring Forties" will perform on Saturday and Sunday

3. It is seen as primarily a maritime event but in the true tradition of live music any musicians are cordially invited to perform at "The Grovehill Pub" all weekend -

4.I am still looking for additional M/Cs for Saturday and Sunday.Anyone interested please PM me.

5. we will be using the Syntan and communal area for"Meet the Artist", workshops and playing area.

Does this song merit being a shanty and if so, does anybody do it in the shanty world? I really love this song and remember it well when I lived in Amsterdam. Sailor (band) were a big hit over there.
You can hear it on this link
Girls Of Amsterdam

The lyrics are

Sailor
The Girls Of Amsterdam
The lyrics are

Beautiful dolls in the windows patiently biding their time
With their eyes looking out to a street full of men
Who are trying to make up their minds
And the lights, they keep shining from eve to silvery dawn
And who needs to sleep when you're falling in love
With the girls of Amsterdam, boy!
The girls of Amsterdam

Soon after dark, we were drinking down at the corner cafe
But fighting broke out with terrible shouts
And people running away
For the cops they came streaming, trying to bring us all in
But we spent the night in soft silky beds
With the girls of Amsterdam, boy!
The girls of Amsterdam

Some people frown at them, blushing with shame
Others may call them by silly old names
But nobody loves a sailor
Like the girls of Amsterdam, boy!
The girls of Amsterdam

And thus, the day came creeping, boy, how the good times fly
As we watched the girls in the morning sun
Sadly waving goodbye
But at least our dreams they last like a sound caught in the wind
And I for one shall remember
The girls of Amsterdam, boy!
The girls of Amsterdam

Info for those that are camping on the leisure centre. Enter through the main gate and take the first turn right behind the centre, follow the road right round "don't turn right or left into either of the car parks" the main road turns to the left, then drive strait on to the field behind the swimming pool. This are will be marked out for caravans campervans and tents. Please Note. I have brought you in this way to avoid driving over the football fields where I am turfing and over seeding the fields prior to the folk festival and next seasons play. Your help in avoiding these areas of the field will be much appreciated. Cheers and hope you all have a great weekend. Cheers Oom Banjo.

One of the Foretop Men Shanty Group, George Clarke, will be appearing on Kevin Young's Radio Show tonight (20th May 2008) the Show is called the Beggars Folk Club. It is a two hour programme that runs from 19.00 hr till 21.00 hrs.

I'm told that you can listen live to the programme by following this link Beggars Folk Club.
Both George Clarke, Ken Stocks and Marie Blackburn will be at the Shanty Festival although I'm not sure of any of the timed spots or where or when at this time.

Why not tune in and enjoy the show?

I must tell you how much I enjoyed myself on Seaside Radio last night and afterwards at The Ship Inn regular Tuesday Night session.

Whilst playing live on air on Kevin Young's Beggars Folk Club Radio show he disappeared into a Closet whilst I was playing the Sailors Horn Pipe between verses.
He reappeared wearing a Vienna Boys Chore Sailors Suit and started dancing the Sailors Hornpipe. When I asked him later about the significance of him coming out of the Closet in his Sailors Suite. He said that he a bought it especially for the Beverly Beck Shanty Festival.

I did manage to get in plenty of plugs for the Shanty Festival although I was unable to give an accurate description of Ken Stocks or Mick McGarry due to the programme going out before the 9 o'clock watershed.

Nick, if you can find your way to the "Sun" keep that on your left follow the road round over the railway line; Hogesons on the right ;coupla hundred yards 'till your hat floats and you are at the Beck.If in doubt gizza bell and I will talk you in.

We are directing people to park opposite Hodgesons on what was the old museum site plenty of parking and it is free.

In answer to a lot of queries Re:the Artistes sessions in the pubs in the afternoon only, are being led by the M?c's and booked artists. These are being worked on the same principal as the Hull Maritime Festival, were the artists do a few songs and the rest is as a singaround if singers be available.
Looks like good weather so let us have a good 'un!!!

I've just looked at the Syntan website, and the links on the left appear to be an image - so obviously not clickable. Has someone been playing with some software again?

On similar lines, the timetable is also an image, and appears to fall off the right hand side - are there any more columns after Grovehill?

I've tried to phone Nev, but I suspect he's probably on deck with a paintbrush,

The regular Friday session in the Tiger is going ahead as usual, mostly tunes.

The GroveHill Pub in Holme Church lane, venue for tunes sessions Sat / Sunday, has good accoustics and lots of character. There is a car park and a good big beer garden behind. They have got in some real ale. Looking forward to trying it out.
You can also get to it on foot from the beckside by going down 'Jack Taylor lane' from the north side of the beck, which is just opposite the Syntan.

Bank holiday Monday
If anyone wants something interesting to do on Monday 26th,
Beverley Minster are doing tours of the roof.
It's interesting and a lot of fun.
Cost is £4 (in aid of the minster up-keep)
and tours are at    10, 11:15, 12:15, 2:15, 3:15, 4:15

That Minster trip reminded me to change my earlier note. The £4 charge did it! Since I posted the details of the Bank Holiday trips on tug Wheldale at Goole Waterways Museum, the price of this has gone up to £4. It's the price of diesel that done it. So you can either stand on the roof of a church and look at Beverley or stand on the deck of a tug and look at Goole docks.

From: Soldier boy

I just popped over for one night (saturday) to visit this festival in its first year of conception.
Being its first year it was a bit quiet in terms of numbers of people but there was lots going on in the programme of events. The thing that struck me was that a hard-core of all the 'right' people were there so it worked.
I am sure that with these people involved working hard to stage it and continuing to attend and support it it will just grow and grow in the years ahead.
It has a lot going for it:
The right people (as mentioned).
All the venues and camping are all in one compact and easily strollable location (this really was a big bonus to me wi' me bad back).
The location itself at Beverly beck is like a seperate little community in the town with lots of interest and history.
It's nearly in the shadow of the Minster itself.
There are 7 pubs all within a stroll of each other and all were used to host informal concerts, workshops, singing and muso sessions
- That's good organisation!
The leisure centre is near all the pub venues, has all the facilities needed and tons of room on its surrounding fields for caravans, campervans and tents for only £8.00 per night.
Loads of parking space also available near leisure centre for non campers coming to the festival.
Because of all the folk friendly pubs in this small locality there is lots of potential to accomodate and further grow 'fringe' singing and muso sessions.
I wasn't there long and didn't go to many sessions in the programme but my impression was that because of all the above this could grow into a real diamond of a festival.
All the right ingredients in the cake are already there. All it needs now is a good stir of publicity and word of mouth and it could become a real cracker and a 'must do'event in the folkie calender. Look out for this festival next year.

Back home and back at the pc , and like others above with the feeling of a fabulous weekend in good company, made to feel thoroughly at home and welcome, all folks working together to make it a success but importantly, all enjoying it tremendously in the process.
Great to meet up with all those too numerous to mention who I'd not seen for a while, including many fellow-Catters.... Thanks especially to Maggie and Les, Hissyfit, John & Zeke, Anna Shannon, the Young'uns, Monkey's Fist, Roaring Forties and Ossonflags (the Guv!) hisself, but let's face it, eveyone was a star!
Considering it was a "first time" with its inevitable little things to sort out, Mick and his team got so much so right (good onya mate -massive well-dun there!) and with a bit more tweaking (and better publicity) this event has all the ingredients to be a regular fixture on the calendar. The dates are already in my diary for next year...

Lin, it was dry! Thank goodness.   What a brill weekend.

Thanks 'danesis' for all the fantastic photos. I missed "Those girlies on Crane Wharf" "Rocky Horror meets Morris Dancing" but your pics showed some of their energy.

All this within 2 miles of home - it was great to see how popular this first festival was and to know that so many travelled far to join in and that Cleethorpes loss was our gain! Great to hear Dave and Julie Evardson again, on fine form at the end of a long day.

Nev and Co - all the boat crews - please come again. I didn't get the chance to get on board the 'stunning' Spider or chat about the vessels.

Having the chance to join forces and harmonise with Trim rig and a Doxy, John Conolly and "the young 'uns" (in order of occurrence) Wow, what a treat - a different dimension which must be repeated.

Congratulations Old Git for drying your tears. Has t'other Geoff got his voice back yet? Apologies from me for my tearful tiredness on Sunday afternoon - the emotion of the song and the virtual hug that envelops this sort of event simply got to me.
The survivors session was 'something else'! Ali and Steve delivered a sound I'd never heard from them before and Hazel Bolton chose the perfect 'harmonise-along' Eileen A'roon(sic).

Like Willa said, "in fear of missing someone out I'll not name any more names"- but all who were there were on finest form. Thank you.
See you next year - if not sooner. Hazel.x.x.x

Many thanks to Mick Ossonflags and the organising time. We had a great time. The Young'Uns were a great discovery, fantastic singers. And loads of other good songs as well. And the Beverley Minstwer carvings were something else again, never seen anything like it.
Love
The Boat Band

In my thanks earlier in this thread I should have included the publicans and bar staff. In particular Maggie and I would like to mention the Mariners, where we were working, for looking after us so well, even putting on a wonderful spread of free grub!

Les

I'd second that Les, the staff in all the pubs were fantastic and entirely supportive. Cheers!

Outrageous story in the Hull Daily Mail about the lock keeper on the Beck refusing entry to a boat coming to the Festival because they hadn't booked 2 days ahead!

If E.Yorks Council are serious about making the Beck a tourist amenity they'd do well to get rid of all the 'jobsworths' first!

Thanks for the link Les, I hadn't heard anything about this. What a shame for them.
The week has flown by and I'm still 'singing' Hartlepool is bloomin' - courtesy of 'the young uns'.
Just think, we were challenging the disco this time last week!
Hazel.

Thanks to Mick and the other organisers. There were some great singers there. The final 'Survivors' session was a tremendous event. And it was all free! Fast Forward to 2009.
