I added a few performances to it and always intended (still do!) to digitise his/our old tapes and locate more film clips of our last a cappella harmony group "Work in Progress" - and others. However, the usual TIME lack-dodgey Health-limited Finances-Aging Thang, are all wearying me - not to mention the current prolonged heatwave here downunder! :(( and anyway, the Family History project is taking care of any "spare" time these days..... Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me - Mississippi John Hurt cover It was the first time I've tried using my MacBook's built-in PhotoBooth application to film and record direct to my Mac. Was very pleasantly surprised at the results. Frankly the picture quality is just as good as using my camera, the sound is if anything better (as you can adjust the recording volume level in Preferences menu). And the ease of use - once you get used to angling a laptop, that is! - is a massive plus. Really nice to be able to see what you're filming on a decent-sized screen! |

Youtube has been rattling so many sabers recently that account holders remove videos for fear of having them removed -- which also is increasingly happening. Three or four on my playlists (not uploaded by me) have been removed, and I am not even sure which they are. They are probably songs I have on CD, anyway, but as I like to share music with friends and don't know how to convert my iTunes to mp3 it is helpful to have them on YT. |

You can object to their assertion. IIRC they flag the video and there's a button/link where you can state your case that the copyright doesn't belong to someone else. I had this on one of my videos (a Carolan tune I think). All I said was that the composer had been dead since whatever date and that the arrangement was mine. The flagging disappeared and nothing else happened. Just state that it's a traditional song and your arrangement and you should be fine. Mick |

"Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All" Well, Mr. Howard was fired by the coal company that he worked for back in May, 2011. He claims it was because of all the safety complaints he made. His case just went to trial last week. A public radio station in West Virginia did a story about Mr. Howard and his discharge case. My video camera isn't HD so there's no point in using HD formats for me. A typical 3 - 4 minute video will upload in about 10 mins or even less. Doing a quick check, my videos are about 50 - 100 MB. I imagine given the format you are using, yours are very much larger, possibly in the GB range hence the long upload times. I think the videos get degraded in the conversion by You Tube (purely an impression) so I'm not sure it's worth uploading HD, though You Tube do let you specify whether or not your video is HD. I've noticed that the videos on Vimeo seem to be of better visual quality than those on You Tube so if you have a camera that can give high quality, Vimeo may be worth investigating. |

If you set up a camera on a tripod, with a cable release (so you don't have to press the shutter release & risk moving it) you can have the work on a table or what ever, instead of upside-down on the scanner glass. You need to rig the camera so it's pointing straight down, which may not be possible without extra extensions for the tripod. You could try putting the work on a sloping tray or board, so long as you can stop it sliding off. I'm looking forward to seeing your next one! |

It actually was being considered for a soundtrack...and still may be, by a Major film studio....but things for the project are still pending. (I am assuming you are referring to "Bittersuite:Joy", and not the others, but "Seascape" was used as a soundtrack for a laser show at the Griffith park planetarium, in Los Angeles. If you are not familiar with the planetarium, it is the same one used in the film, "Rebel Without a Cause" with James Dean, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood and Jim Backus,(may they all Rest in Peace)...during the latter part of the film. I keep telling some of the Mudcatters to focus on the gift of music, rather than politics...and not to let the drag of the world's upheaval to clutter their filters...especially when playing or performing. Many of the videos are from the '08 or '10 Getaway and some are from Portland FolkMusic Society's Singtime Frolics. Others are from various places, including some of my own songs (a few originals, many covers). If you want to find the ones that are from Mudcatters, use "Mudcatter" as the key word. I have suggested this as a key word for others to use to post videos of Mudcatters, since the word "Mudcat" will get you hundreds of irrelevant links, most of them having to do with marine dredging equipment or blues musicians nicknamed "Mudcat." Not sure about Burns having much of a hand in it as a writer - certainly (most of) the five verse attributed to him don't feel like Burns, lacking his heavy handed mawkishness which ruins (for example) both Highland Widow's Lament and John Barleycorn, though I'll accept wretch's destinie! as being pure Burns in this respect, likewise the second stanza. The provenance of the other verses lies in The Tradition of the thing, although the great Davie Stewart felt certain of them were undoubtedly the work of MacPherson. In many ways, Stewart's version remains definitive, and the most authentic in terms of traditional provenance, with Stewart claiming descendancy from MacPherson, whose broken fiddle is extant, likewise the verses claimed to have been written by him, both of which you can see here: http://www.clan-macpherson.org/museum/fiddle.php |

Folks began posting miscellaneous videos featuring my playing and I collected them all into a favorites file. The quality varies greatly among these. I have only one actual music video of my song, "These Old Shoes". Some of the rest of the videos in the file were captured from live shows. Some were impromptu camera captures by passersby on the street. In some cases the videos were then edited by others into their own visions. At least one of them is a television commercial. The result of the campaign that used that commercial later brought several million dollars to those who launched it but I received nothing for my part, except the exposure of having my music included in the effort. I also get a cameo in the first few seconds of the commercial. However, because of the camera crew's efforts at posting one of my songs, "Wall Street Bail Out Blues", on YouTube, I did get my photo in The Wall Street Journal and mentioned in an article about songwriters, that made the cover on February 6th 2009. The article by writer Rob Tomsho, "No Dough In The Do Re Mi", also mentioned some other songwriting heroes, Woody Guthrie, Neil Young and Tom Paxton. Priceless! Favourite song that I learned from Pete Ryder who wrote it called Nat Shapiro's Time. I play it much faster than he plays it and left out the last verse because we were under time pressures on the night. John who plays bodhran is a very fine interpreter of Jake Thackray's songs and Joss plays with Kathryn Tickell so I was pretty lucky for the night though the practice was about 2 minutes worth - so the beginning is a bit ropey Nat Shapiro's Time |

I thought that because I have an unusual name, and was really only a speck in a sea of videos, that preparing the vid in the way that I did was the way to go. Give 'em a sample song and some info... I've been a Director of Marketing for several organizations, so I believe being pro-active has it's rewards. Some Mudcatters prefer a more conservative approach. The lightbulb just went off over my head, when it should've as soon as I got my new MacBook. I started playing around with a new iMac a few months ago, just aiming the screen at myself and at anyone else I wanted to video and going to iMovie and hitting "Capture from camera." The screen has a built-in camera and you can record the sound from the built-in microphone or from an external mic. Using the built-in camera and mic, I found that I could capture excellent videos -- good picture and sound too. (You can tweak both of those later if you want, but it's often not necessary. Just try not to have the camera too close to your subject - but that's often true with most any camera.) Since I got the small, portable version, a new MacBook, I've been making lots of videos, both for research purposes and for recording music shows. I recently video'd workshops and the Sat. night concert at Singtime Frolics here in Oregon. I'm in process of putting these on DVD. Now here's where I should say, "Duh!!!" I've been thinking I could use my own video'd shows or clips from them to make promo videos and/or to post at my own website when I get one set up. Although I watch stuff on YouTube a lot, it never dawned on me that I could skip the DVDs and skip the website and post stuff directly on YouTube!! I may or may not want to put just anything on YouTube - especially my own songs that haven't been duly registered with the LOC Copyright office yet - but it sure would make it cheap (well, aside from the $1100+ I spent on the laptop) to let prospective clients hear an see samples of my music and performances. Of course, next time I record one of my own full-hour programs, I must remember to set the "Sound preferences" up right so it won't turn out to be a silent flic like the St. Patrick's Day party I recorded. When I gave it to eMusic, they surprised me by listing me under Jazz/Blues. I get compared to Ken Nordine, and Leonard Cohen, who started with Poetry & Folk and became LEONARD COHEN. His own unique enigma, if you will... Is that Rock, Folk, Spoken Word, Poetry, Melodramatic Popular Song, etc? He's gone way past labels and is his own entity. What I was hoping was that Mudcatters would link up, or be aware of each other on YouTube. For me, it's just another way of reaching out and keeping the music alive. I personally find it interesting when an artist stretches his capabilities and tries new things. I find it invigorating... I did try to play some Blues in an Irish Pub one time(An "Open" Stage, sadly not a MENTALLY open stage), and heard "oh, no" after about 4 seconds...For some who are used to hearing the rhythm of McNamara's Band, blues changes were quite a shock. They wanted dunta dunta dunta dunta...If you go off that, they just don't want to hear it...Which is O.K and is their choice. There, I met people from around the world who played Folk Music. All the traditional stuff from Ireland, England, etc. There used to be a Hoot on Sundays where everybody got to do 3 songs. So there was EVERYTHING. You'd get 2 sisters from Ireland singing lullabies, every form of Folk Artist, Comics, Bluesmen like me, banjos, dulcimers, etc. So, I played the blues and did some folk songs in my sets. So I grew up with people who more or less let you "do your thing", as we used to say... About a year or so ago, I Googled my name, and lo and behold, Mudcat came up. "What's that?" I asked myself. Somebody named bobad had entered my name on a thread called "l Little Known 60's Folk Singers"! "Gee", I said to myself," Isn't that wild to be remembered after so many years? I barely new what "thread" meant, as I was new to computers. But, I started to post, adding my memories. At the same time I had begun to write music for Films, an example of which is what you see on YouTube as "The Soul Eater"...I also had built a studio and was Marketing my stuff around the world... Turns out, I knew a few people on Mudcat, which led me play some guitar for Bruce Murdoch at the Branches and Roots Festival in Ormstown, Quebec. By that time I met more great Mudcatters, like Beer(Adrien), who was running the festival...Many more while there, and even more at Bruce's Montreal Concert. I made some friends... So, in the spirit of The Yellow Door, and all of the above, for me, music was never about boundaries. I grew up with Folk and so I support it whenever I can. I never really considered myself a "Folk" Artist, but got labeled as such after doing hundereds of shows in Coffeehouse, Folk Clubs, Concerts, etc. It's sort of like when you see a seagull in with the pigeons, they're all birds looking for food.. I've got 10,000+ Friends on MySpace, working in and on my studio, on Mudcat as much as I can, and I get requests to join blogs, groups, "review my songs", "listen to my band", "check me out" "Can you connect me with" ALL THE TIME... So, there is only so much I can do, and so, for me "Guest" status works just fine... I work 12-15 hours a day on my projects... I did enter YouTube on Mudcat by the way, to see if it had been done before. Nothing came up, so I thought I was safe. Didn't do the "go back three years" thing though... And so it is, as you see in the world, so many different kinds of people and music all out there in cyberspace. I listen to as much DIFFERENT kinds of music as I can, Tabla players, Synth guys, Indian, African, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rap...Everything. I find it makes me a better MUSICIAN for having done so. So for all the purists, if your world is limited to Folk Music, just turn the page... I think if you start to ask Mudcatters what they listen to, I think you might be surprised to see it's not ALL about Folk, just good music. While you might not listen to, or respect Rap, there is a lot of Art in it, not all of it, but glimmers of brilliance pop up. Check Missy Elliot, Akon for Hip-Hop. The one thing that saddens me about Mudcat, is that I see so many threads degenerate into petty arguments, bickering, one-upmanship, trickery, etc. You would think that people would rise above, but alas, Mudcat becomes a mirror as to what is going on in the world. So, what I do, is look for the good. and, there are MANY GOOD things about Mudcat. We have been given this incredible tool of the internet and computers, I prefer to use it to accomplish positive things...Like supporting Folk music, even when what I'm playing, at the moment, something that is not Folk. And doing that while fondly remembering the openness and dreams of the 60's and The Yellow Door... Hope that answers your questions... Respect to All... Peace & Blessings...bob |

Then found friends with computers, asked 1000 questions and was still struggling. So I had the friends help me do the uploading. watched them. and then got a computer and did the YouTube video by myself with the manual in one hand and the other hand on the keyboard. If you goof it, not much will happen. It just won't work... The YouTube thing can be done the same way. 1/Get or borrow a digital camera w/video & that can record sound. 2/ Do yo thang. 3/Find a friend that knows the tech side of computers, and create a free account on YouTube and upload your vid. The YouTube site tells you all you need to know. Easy...Where there's a will, there's a way... Soggy Bottom Boys: Once you find somebody to do the tech stuff, you can access your site from any internet cafe' or most libraries...And you're on a computer now to be able to post, Sooo? Kind of like "the wild west". But, nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say. So, are Mudcatters interested? Have any of you besides me, Penny Lang, and Noah Zacharin tried it? Is there a future for Folk Music on YouTube? There's a 5 star rating system. So far, 1 star for me by somebody, But ONE DAY, 5-STARS FOR SURE! LOL But hey, that's not bad for a speck in a sea of videos...And it HAS been only a little over 2 weeks. The good news. I met this guy by the name of Lionel Neykov who got FEATURED by YouTube.The result? In excess of 240,000 views. That translated to 7522 plays IN ONE DAY on MySpace. I know another group with over 500,000 views which would be a lot of Folk Music if YOU got there... This is getting to be Mudcat's longest initial post, but you get the idea... Cameras ready?
