Subject: A recording of Raglan Road?
From: GUEST,Guest: Pat Holub

Hi,

I'm looking for a version of "Raglan Road"--a version which may not
exist. When I heard Paddy Reilly's recording of it, I found that he
had a beautiful voice, but the recording sounded like it was
accompanied by 101 strings. I've heard other versions where
the production was okay, but the singer was not as good. Is there a
version of "Raglan Road" with an excellent singer and an arrangement
which is quiet and restrained and the singing voice is dominant?

And speaking of Paddy Reilly, I know he must have made many
CD's. Can you recommend one without all the orchestral arrangement I
mentioned before? (I already have his live album.)

    Thanks in advance.

Hi

Have you checked out Luke Kelly's version (who sang the song first as far as I know)? As far as I remember it has a pretty simple accompaniment - the voice is dominant throughout.

The song has been recorded dozens of times. There are oodles of different versions on Youtoube.

Luke Kelly's has to be the one. The author, poet Patrick Kavanagh, handpicked him to record it.

Seonaid O'Connor has done a version rather as you describe.

The recording by the late Luke Kelly is wonderful, very haunting. In my opinion his finest recording.

Joan Osborne recorded it with the Chieftains. Etc, etc.

Also, you might try Loreena McKennitt's version, on her CD "Nights From the Alhambra"
