Thanks, but I cannot. I am not a member of myspace.:-)

It's really not important that I reach her, folks. I figured if she wanders in here, she'll see the thread. I just wondered about her website and if anyone knew more about why it is down.

Thanks, though.:-)

Hey Kat- Yes, I'm wondering also why my site is down! Didn't know it, but Jon just put the rest of my long-missing Itinerary on, a day or two ago, so maybe it got messed up then. I just now told him that Mudcat's in an uproar because of my missing Site!!!!!!!!!!!! Well sometimes you have to hit a mule on the head to get his attention.

And right now I'm ready to hit myself over the head- just finished a LONG posting on the thread for the lady looking for songs for her son's baptism, but it did NOT get posted- and seems to be lost; must have been thrown off by another posting at the same time or something. I just don't have time to do it again now, drat! Anyway, Jon's working on the site now and that should be working again soon.    Love, Jean

Dear Jean,

I hear good mules are hard to come by, so I wouldn't kick him too hard. Always a pleasure to see your words in print.

I recently enjoyed greatly your recording of Deep Shady Grove on Mike Seeger's reunion CD.

cheers, all the best,

Please talk to us as often as you have the wish to do so. We will always wish to see your words here.

One thing you are not, Jean, is unloved.

Maybe you kill threads because after you've spoken, no one else can top what you've said?

Jean, if your posts make a thread pause, chances are it's because you have the effect of inviting people to think, feel, reflect, go off and play some music, etc.

You're not "loved" here. You ARE "here." When you're not around, we're just a sorry bunch of sillies!

Jean, you could never kill a thread. I suspect part of it is what Genie says...when you do post, it just gives us a lot to ponder and muse over and wonder how the heck anyone could follow with anything worthy, sometimes. Face it, darlin'...you are a Venerable and we LOVE you! IT's like that old ad for Merrill Lynch:

When Jean Ritchie speaks, writes, sings, posts...Folkies Listen!**bg**

Thanks, again, Dear Lady,

I hate it when what I wrote goes missing! It is so difficult to recapture the entire idea again, because once I've worked through it, my brain says "that's that." There are several mudcatters who are disciplined enough to compose their posts in a different file then post to Mudcat, so it isn't lost if the page acts up.

Hi, Jean -
I hate that when I lose a long post. I have some suspicions about the cause, but we haven't been able to come up with a solution yet - so it's better to be safe than sorry. When you're posting something long, it's best to type it in a word processor and then copy and pasted it into the Mudcat message box - allows you to spellcheck that way too.

I hope you'll try your baptism post again. I don't sing at baptisms as often as I used to, but occasions sometimes arise.

-Joe-

Yes, we do love her, eh, Alice?

I remember talking to her once, or maybe it was in a PM. This great lady made a mention of the fact that she wasn't comfortable with folks treating her like she was anything special. I remember just chuckling to myself, and then responding to her that she was indeed someone special. Jean, you have shared so much with us all, through your work,... and for those of us lucky enough to have met you, through your wonderful temperament and patience, that we just don't know enough ways to say thank you. Sometimes folks wonder about the value of their life's work. I can tell you this. If it is measured in how much one is loved, and how much people cherish their life's work... from those who sit in high places, and those that sit down on the plain.... then you are most assuredly someone special, and there are no others to compare you to. Do you know that my 16 year old daughter, a typical kid of this age, tells her friends with great pride that she got to sit on your porch and talk to you? And she then proceeds to tell them all about your work and why you are such an important artist. She has often told me that she is so very happy to have made the decision to come to your house that day.

So.... yeah, dear friend Alice, we sure do love this women, this special friend, eh?

All the best,

Mick

Subject: Question for Jean Ritchie
From: GUEST,Melani Carty
Date: 14 Apr 08 - 03:35 PM

Please forgive me for posting this in a perhaps inappropriate thread, but I tried contacting Jean Ritchie through her website and it was down, and my googling led me here to Mudcat.

While researching my husband's family tree, I have become very familiar with Jean RIchie's story and her music, because so many times when I am searching for information about Perry County, her name pops up. Today I noticed in the 1930 census that Miss Ritchie's family lived in the exact same geographical area as my husband's ancestors did. This has led me to think perhaps there is a chance the two families could have known of one another. If I may be so bold, would it be possible to ask Miss Ritchie to take a look at the details below and tell me if she knew the Young family at all?

My family has been trying so hard to research the family tree and we are stuck at the point of figuring out who WIlliam P. Young's parents were. We think they were Thomas and Lucinda Young, also from Mason's Creek, but just can't find any documentation on Ancestry.com or anywhere else.

William Young was first married to Margaret Caudill in 1882. Their children were Ira (born 1882), Ida, Pearlla and Alice. It is said Margaret left Willliam for another man around 1900, but was killed when falling off a horse while crossing a frozen creek to go visit her children, who were still living with WIlliam.    Around 1905 WIlliam married Sarah (possibly last name Fields), and he and Sarah can be traced as they moved around the area up through 1920. We cannot find a death record for WIlliam or Sarah, but there is a rumor he died on a train on the return trip from Florida and that he was an amateur photographer.

Ira Young also went by the name James Ira Young, and he went on to marry Julia Campbell in 1908 and one of their children was Leness (sometimes spelled Lenas) Young. Leness Young was my husband's grandfather. Leness married Mary Joseph in the 1930s and they lived a coal miner's life in Blue Diamond and Viper. Leness also drove a taxicab and was a pool hustler from what I hear.

I have provided many names to help make the mental connection. However, the point where we need the big help is figuring out more about WIlliam P. Young and who his parents were (and we think from circumstantial evidence that his parents were Thomas Young and Lucinda Welch Young of Mason's Creek). If Miss Ritchie recalls any of these people's names, perhaps she will have some clues that can help us pinpoint William Young's origins. If so, please contact me at cartychronicles@mac.com. Any tidbit would be ever so appreciated.

Sincerely,
Melani Carty

Well, Melani, I know next to nothing about the Mace's Creek Youngs, but, for the one name that I remember, why not give me your email address and I'll answer. As this is a music discussion forum, it's probably not a good idea to do a long geneology search here (I do love geneology, however, so don't go way).   Best wishes, Jean
PS: You'll need to join Mudcat to be able to write to me with this info, on the personal pages, so- if you don't want to do that, find a Mudcatter and have him/her write to me and give me your email add? Gosh this is getting complicated!!!!!!!!!!!!!    JR

Dear Miss Ritchie,

I hope you will see this on this old-ish thread.

Your website is still down. The message is "The name servers for this domain (jeanritchie.com) are incorrectly configured. Please contact your domain name administrator for further assistance."

I wrote to you a few days ago about the Young family of Mace's Creek (see above). You said to get in touch with you. Maybe I won't need to join Mudcat and you you see this message here. My email address is cartychronicles@mac.com. I would love to hear what you recall about the Youngs ...
