Subject: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: GUEST,JHW Date: 19 Apr 08 - 05:09 PM Years ago from maybe the World Service I taped a fragment of a version of the Lowlands of Holland to a lively melody. Each verse ends 'Since these high winds and stormy seas have come and parted my love and me' though I have only two verses so others may vary. One verse goes
There are men enough in Galloway that'll make your heart content, Oh there's men enough in Gallowa, Alas ther's none for me, Since these ... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 19 Apr 08 - 05:47 PM Sung by a man or a woman? Scottish, Irish or American accent? Presumably unaccompanied? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: ClaireBear Date: 19 Apr 08 - 07:29 PM There is a version that seems to be close in the DT here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: MartinRyan Date: 20 Apr 08 - 03:00 AM Sounds more like the relatively standard Irish, "Gal(lo)way" version to me. Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: MartinRyan Date: 20 Apr 08 - 03:04 AM Guest JHW, In fact there are lots of versions in the Digital Tradition (use the Search box with "lowlands of holland"). Pick through them and see which rings most bells! Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 20 Apr 08 - 05:21 PM Many thanks Martin and Claire. I've been through the DT versions and find the last verse of Lowlands of Holland 2 all but identical to 'my' last verse, 'The' High Winds rather than 'These'. None of the melodies are as I have. Yes Martin on re-listen I reckon Galway rather than Galloway. Sadly as well as it being an atrocious recording I find I have lost the end some time due to re-splicing the trailer tape. Thanks again Malcolm - Sung by a woman with a band featuring whistle and prominent harp. Nearest sounding voice I know is Margie Sinclair of Mirk but this singer could be Irish rather than Scots. Thanks again all - John Wilson |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Little Robyn Date: 21 Apr 08 - 04:07 PM 'Sung by a woman with a band featuring whistle and prominent harp.' Well that kills my theory - I was going to suggest the Tommy Makem version which is on an Astor recording GGS 851 Songs of Tommy Makem. It starts:
And in my married bed Up comes a bold sea Captain And stood at my bedhead. Sayin' arise, arise young wedded man And come along with me To the lowlands of Holland For to fight the enemy.
Until the day I die Since the high winds and the stormy seas Have parted my love and I. And the cover has a photo of a very young Tommy with a Clarke whistle in his mouth. Lovely! Robyn |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Little Robyn Date: 21 Apr 08 - 04:15 PM But if it is the Tommy Makem version but sung by a later group, there's a thread here that gives the chords and a bit more info. Robyn |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 21 Apr 08 - 04:45 PM Thanks Robyn - I've found a tiny mp3 clip of The Chieftains and Natalie Merchant on www.thechieftains.com/discography/disc_tearsstone.asp which is very close to the melody I have though much slower. But the whistle part is so like that on 'my' version that what I have may be another chieftains reading? John |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Wolfgang Date: 22 Apr 08 - 10:34 AM The Johnstons also did it. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: GUEST,guest Date: 22 Apr 08 - 10:41 AM Could it have been the version from Dolores Keane and John Faulkner-- Broken Hearted I'll Wander (1979)? When I sing it over to myself it's "these high winds..." rather than "the..." that wants to come out. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 22 Apr 08 - 03:50 PM Hi Guest, Done some searches on that - I see they use hurdy gurdy which I'm very fond of. The album seems due out in June so I'll seek it out. Thanks, John |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Declan Date: 22 Apr 08 - 04:53 PM The harp and whistle would suggest the Chieftains to me although I'm not familiar with their version of the song. Dolores version is from almost 30 years ago. Not sure what is out in June. Is it a CD re-issue? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 22 Apr 08 - 07:41 PM I guess so. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7671573 says "Scheduled to release Tuesday, June 10, 2008" |
Subject: ADD Version: Lowlands of Holland From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Apr 08 - 08:06 PM The Chieftains/Natalie Merchant recording was on the 1999 CD, Tears of Stone. Click for YouTube recording. I really like it. -Joe- Here are the lyrics Merchant uses: Lowlands of Holland (as sung by Natalie Merchant) On the night that I was married And upon my marriage bed There came a bold sea captain And he stood at my bedhead Saying, "arise, arise, young wedded man And come along with me To the lowlands of Holland To fight the enemy" Now then, Holland is a lovely land And upon it grows fine grain Surely 'tis a place of residence For a soldier to remain Where the sugar cane is plentiful And the tea grows on each tree Well, I never had but the one sweetheart And now he's gone far away from me I will wear no stays around my waist Nor combs all in my hair I will wear no scarf around my neck for to save my beauty there And never will I marry Not until the day that I die Since these four winds and these stormy seas Came between my love and I From the Chieftains album, Tears of Stone |
Subject: ADD Version: The Low, Low Lands of Holland From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Apr 08 - 08:32 PM Here's a version which is claimed to be a transcription of the Dolores Keane recording from Broken Hearted I'll Wander. The Low, Low Lands of Holland On the night that I was married And on my marriage bed Up came a bold sea captain And he stood at my bed head Saying, "Arise, arise, young wedded man And come along with me To the low, low lands of Holland To fight the enemy Now Holland is a lovely land And on it grows fine grain Sure it is a place of residence For a soldier to remain Where the sugar cane is plentiful And the tea grows on the tree" I never had but the one sweetheart And now he's far away from me Said the mother to the daughter "Give off your sore lament Oh there's men enough in Galway For to be your heart's content" "If there's men enough in Galway Alas there are none for me Since these high winds and stormy seas Have come between my love and me" I will wear no swaithe around my waist Nor combs pull in my hair No handkerchief around my neck For to save my beauty fair And never will I marry Until the day I die Since the low, low lands of Holland Have come between my love and I Source: http://musicalprogress.org |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 25 Apr 08 - 10:28 AM Joe, Have just heard the Utube. Very near the same melody that grabbed me as my old tape, though some octave leaps left out and much slower. Thanks, John |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since these High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Fred McCormick Date: 25 Apr 08 - 10:40 AM It looks very like the version which Paddy Tunney recorded for Topic in 1965 and which was released on his LP, The Irish Edge. You can find it reissued on Voice of the People Vol.2: My Ship shall sail the Ocean. Topic TSCD 652. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since These High Winds and Stormy Sea From: JHW Date: 28 Apr 08 - 10:53 AM Thanks Fred. Left you a message the other day but seems not to have appeared. John Bentham is letting me have a listen to above. Long time since I saw you at the Tiger. You've probably been there again since I was last that way. John |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Since These High Winds and Stormy Sea From: Wolfgang Date: 29 Apr 08 - 11:11 AM My above post that the Johnstons have sung this song is wrong. Keene/Faulkner have been mentioned. Anne Byrne and Paddy Roche have sung it on the LP "I chose the green" and Martin Carthy has sung it on the LP "Martin Carthy II". These are the LPs I have with this song. Five more versions are found on 5 of my CDs but they are too recent for the question here. Wolfgang |
Subject: ADD Version: Lowlands of Holland (Annie Power) From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Oct 19 - 02:36 PM Anne Power alerted me to her 1978 recording of "Lowlands of Holland." It's on her album titled Douce Amere, which she recorded with John Molineux. The song is very close to what was requested in the first message of the thread. Here's my attempt at a transcription. LOWLANDS OF HOLLAND (as recorded by Annie Power, 1978) On the night that I was married And lay in marriage bed Up came a bold sea captain And stood at my bed head Saying, "Rise, arise, you wedded man, And come along with me To the lowlands of Holland For to face your enemy." Oh, Holland is a lovely land And in it grows fine grain It is a place of residence For soldiers to remain Where the sugar cane is plentiful And the tea grows on each tree. I never had but the one sweetheart He's far abroad from me Said the mother to her daughter "Leave off your sad lament. There's men enough in Galloway To be your heart's content." There's men enough in Galloway, But alas there's none for me, Since the high winds and stormy seas Have parted my love and me." For the stormy winds began to blow, And the seas did loudly roar; The captain and his gallant ship Was never seen no more. I will wear no stays around my waist, Nor combs all in my hair, No handkerchief about my neck To hide my beauty fair; And neither will I marry, love, Until the day I die, Since the high winds and stormy seas Have parted my love and I. For the stormy wind began to blow, And the seas did loudly roar; The captain and his gallant ship Was never seen no more. |
Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: JHW Date: 20 Oct 19 - 01:58 PM Thanks for this. On my Birthday weekend. Will try and find my old tape again. Tried the link and got picture and progress but no sound; next go it worked. This is the melody I've been looking for!!!. Tiny differences in timing and text and not the performer I had but this is it. Thanks very much for getting back. I've saved the text and now I'll have to learn it! John |

Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: beachcomber Date: 20 Oct 19 - 07:30 PM I remember a version sung by Shirley Bland , accompanied by Leon Rosselson. It was on an LP of "Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor with The Galliards". I thought it was a beautiful arrangement. |
Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: Lighter Date: 21 Oct 19 - 09:31 AM Joe, those words are almost verbatim those of Irish singer Paddy Tunney's outstanding version of the song, recorded in the 1950s. I first heard it fifty years ago, and I still think it must be as one of the finest English-language trad performances ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F26FsXK4ONg&list=PLrS5iJXoQ2zxZt8oVyNvNtvFPsuBC1Pee&index=4 Every Mudcatter should give it a listen. |

Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: Mrrzy Date: 21 Oct 19 - 11:25 AM Cynthia Gooding, on I think the Queen of Hearts album. This is the first song I sang in public. |
Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 21 Oct 19 - 11:42 AM Donal Clancy (Liam's son) does a fine version on his latest recording 'On The Lonesome Plain' my review of which should be in the next issue of Folk NorthWest mag. It's a really worthwhile album, and many thanks to Keith Price for alerting me to it. Beautiful guitar work too. |
Subject: RE: Version:High Winds and Stormy Seas parted-Lowlands From: JHW Date: 22 Oct 19 - 05:24 AM Many thanks for the Paddy Tunney link. Not on my sole PT LP. |
