I had an email this morning from the festival that offers everything I could want for a Bank holiday weekend at the end of May.
They asked me to pass it on to all the people in my email address book, which I wouldn't think it right to do. But some of you might be interested.
I followed the link to the festival website and was shocked to find that the Rose and Crown is SHUT for structural alterations.
Where will we have our sessions?

They also give links to
video of last years festival , the website of festival guests Solas an interview with James Fagan & Nancy Kerr on Spiral Earth , and pictures from the local paper

You could try the Borough, in the past they've been keen to get a session going and used to host the irish session. The Black Horse might let you use the skittle alley.

I'm pleased to say that the Bear Necessities lunchtime sing has a new home at the Black Horse (the other end of the High Street) - under the same management as the Rosie was - Jay was always keen to have us and there will be lunchtime Ceilidh (phew! - the spelling always kills me!) in the car park there. I haven't yet heard where the English Music Session will be but it's always been well attended so I'm sure Bob will find somewhere cosy place for it.

Hoope to be seeing some of you there!

Tony

They were sooooo unlucky with the weather last year - lets all keep fingers crossed for better luck this time! I can't imagine being anywhere else on that weekend - Chippenham is the place to be, and if you've never tried it, go along this year. As Mo says, there really is everything you could want (in terms of folk music that is, I can't speak for other desires!!).

Other desires.... well the food has improved (when we started going the town shut down for Sunday and Monday), and at my age what else would I want. Or did you mean the craft fair, lots of stalls clooging up the High Street on Monday.
I started going for the social dance (Playford, American, and a chance to learn something new), with a singaround or Shanty session thrown in when the feet or brain needed a rest, or a concert to eat my fish and chips in. Then we discovered the workshop to learn some session tunes, and the English session. And the singing in the Cause (an old chapel with marvellous acoustics). Not much time left to watch the displays, though I might pause while passing through. People with more energy enjoy the ceilidhs.
I get the impression that there are dozens of specialities all doing there own thing, and we get a chance to look and taste. If only there were more hours in the day.

As long as there's a shop to sell me embroidery supplies, a good bookshop and a place to sit and sew/read/drink beer, I don't think I'll mind too much!

LTS - A little local knowledge (is a dangerous thing?)

Shop for embroidery supplies - try Fabrics Galore, The Caseway, Chippenham (also embroidery stall in craft marquee on Island Park alongside the main display area).

Bookstore - bad news, Ottakars closed - good news, replaced by Waterstones Borough Parade - by Neeld Hall on Festival Programme map.

Place to sew/read/drink beer - innumerable, but suggest whilst watching displays on Island Park, or at either of the two beautiful festival campsites alongside the River Avon which flows through centre of town.

News for regular visitors - don't miss the new pub/eatery just a bit up from the Black Horse (where the lunchtime sings and ceilidhs are being held) and just before unmissable Brunel Railway Bridge. Reports are they are friendly and the food is not only very good but also good value (sorry, the name escapes me at the moment).

I'll be there as usual, with my Osteopathic Clinic tent on the caravan site on Monckton Park, near to the Olympiad.
Open for "patching up" sessions 9.00 till 12.00 daily, and also "on call" by mobile phone. See posters or Stewards Co-ordinators for details.
Fees very cheap for folkies.

Hi all

We'll be there, as usual - only missed Lacock years 2 & 3 so far!

I'm calling for the Aquelidh again this year. So bring your swimming costumes to the Olympiad pool on Sunday evening and enjoy a good splash and come out all clean and lovely!!!

Sadly, no Breton dancers with us this year, probably with us in 2009. UK & French holidays don't fit this year.

See you all soon. Looking forward to the BEST Folk Festival in the UK!

A bientot

There may be nothing wearier than a twice-told tale, but I've just started separate threads about the concertina part-playing and English tunes practice sessions Spare Parts will be running again this year. Music is available in advance as dots, pdfs and midis if you want it.

We'll mostly be in the Rotary Hall - anyone allergic to concertinas should consider themselves warned.

It's a shame to have lost some of the traditional venues, but I've no doubt we'll make the new ones feel like home in pretty short order.

CMR will be running a harmony workshop on Monday morning and Carolyn will be doing one on "Care of the Voice" (with Emily Portman). And in case anyone out there suffers from nerves (surely not!!) I'm running a session on "Dealing with nerves and stage-fright" on Saturday morning. Lots of practical ideas and things to try out...

I won't be there - sailing the briny deep somewhere near Plymouth over the weekend. Also later in the week if anyone wants to join us - Plymouth - Fowey - Falmouth - Dartmouth - Plymouth till Thursday.

My daughter will, however, be there, dancing (and singing & playing I should think) with NYFTE.

Have a good festival !

though there is usually one next door to the Old Rd Tavern in the evenings.

French dancing in the Old Rd Tavern Barn Sunday night usually. I will be there early as it usually gets too crowded later - and there is a ceilidh to be at..............

It seems logical to me to put in 'folk festival' as that is what's happening on this occasion. Ah well, no probs anyway.

Ha NO PROBS??? who am I kidding. As you may have noticed i wasn't there on Monday. The weather was SO bad there really was no point.

Yet again I have made a loss. That's 2 in a row. How long can I stay on the road? To be fair Bob hasn't put the pitch fee up for about 4 years but other fests are (more on this thread)are rising in leaps and bounds. It won't be long before I'm forced off the road.

I do hope you all got home safely and not too wet.

Thanks for battling to my trailer on Sunday (all 89 customers![not all cats]) it was lovely to put names to faces. Hey Liz the Squeak, that episode with the boat and the bin lid was fun!

Yes, there are 2 festivals going on really. Since we were in B&B and interested in the indoor dances and sessions, all we had to worry about was keeping dry while dashing between venues. So we had a great time as usual.
For the campers, traders and display teams, a different story I should think.

It was wet... but fun.

Thanks to Breton Cap for retrieving my songbook - I'm lost without it as it also has the phone number for the vet in it!

Sorry I didn't get to your stall to buy lemonade, Ms Lemon - but Limpit and her friends did, and they loved it! The boat and the bin lid was funny but the coot was unimpressed!

Mr Red - nice to put a face to the colour at last.

Did I miss anyone?

It was very good as it always is, so, so, sorry to look up the main drag (no pun intended) on Monday & see it so empty due to the rain. I KNOW the team work so hard to make it a great event. So a very well done to the committee & the stewards. Hopefully next year will be dry (of rain that is!)

Ah yes... I outed Skipy. I know who he is now!!!

It was rather disheartening to see those poor traders on the main street, holding down their stalls against the wind and rain, but having hardly anyone to sell to...

But it was also good to see a sense of humour - the ticket office selling 'amphibious tickets only' and a puddle full of plastic ducks nearby.

One thing I will comment on though - despite being asked in the programme to put 'money in the bucket' at certain events, I never actually saw a bucket that wasn't being used to bail out.

And doesn't Derek Gifford look like a pocket sized Sean Connery?!

Maybe it won't be another 12 years before I go again - last time I went, Limpit was a sweet babe in arms.
