Subject: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: The Admiral Date: 25 Apr 08 - 10:50 AM We held another successful 'Willy' theme night at Maidenhead Folk Club last night, 'Willy Night VI - Willy Comes Again'. It was only successful because a lot of people not only sang your standard 'Willy and Nancy' songs but also thought ingenuitively and imaginatively and produced items as such - Steven Fosters' 'Hard Times' for instance! I wondered what the virtual performers of Mudcat would have done? Songs, Tunes, Verse whatever! |

From: Flash Company Date: 25 Apr 08 - 11:03 AM Remember hearing Artisan go into a long introduction about songs of the genre of young ladies falling for young men, the young man's name invariably being William, and having cited a number of well known songs, saying 'Here is one of the more obscure versions'....... Met him on a Monday and my heart stood still, Da do ron......etc! It sounds marvellous done 'a capella' FC |

From: Acorn4 Date: 25 Apr 08 - 01:17 PM To My Wack Fol Diddle 'Twas on a Monday morning in the month of May To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day As I walk-ed out to frolic in the new mown hay, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Yeow, in the month of May Yeow , in the new mown hay Oh, what on earth would me old man say? To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day He said his name was Willy, he'd a roving eye To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day He said "me lovely Nancy, does you fancy I?" To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Yeow, a roving eye, Yeow, does you fancy I? I says this is a folk song so I've not much choice, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day He pick-ed me up at seven and to my surprise, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Dress-ed like a dogs dinner, couldn't believe my eyes, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Yeow, it was a dreadful scene, Yeow, it shattered all my dreams, He said "I'm a member of the local Morris team," To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Well now I am a getting to the end of my song, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day Cos me darling Willy to the wars has gone, To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day All along the livelong day, Pale and wan I slowly fade away, What if he comes home with his bells blown away To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day I knew I should never 'ave played away To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day I suppose I'll 'ave to dress myself in mans' array To my wack fol diddle to my wack fol day To tune of "Da Doo Ron Ron..." |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Gurney Date: 25 Apr 08 - 06:52 PM Good Idea, but rude. Long time ago, a bunch of us traddies did an impromptu workshop where each song had to have some reference to the one preceding it, even if vague. Not for the limited of repertoire. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Georgiansilver Date: 26 Apr 08 - 04:21 PM Wrote and performed this a few years back to the tune of "Both sides the Tweed"...It went down quite well. The water is deep and so wide, I fear that I cannot cross o'er. Nor have I the wings I might fly, To be with my true love once more. For Willie lives over the sea, In the land of Van Diemen they say. And I never will see my true love, Unti--il my dying day. Found guilty they took him away, On His Majestys ship the good "Sire". Although he is so far from me, 'Twill not kill this loves inner fire. I'll go to that Van Diemens Land, To find the true love I adore. But I need of a handsome boatman, To row me to that distant shore. My true love shall see me again, For there will I go to his side. I will gather him close to my breast, He will take me to be his own bride. Though Van Diemens Land may be far, As there it is so will I be. I'll hold my true love again, And he in his turn shall hold me. Lyrics, Mike Hill (August 2004) Tune, trad (Both Sides the Tweed) |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Georgiansilver Date: 26 Apr 08 - 04:23 PM I did have to alter the "I'll hold my Willie again" to 'true love' for obvious reasons. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Acorn4 Date: 26 Apr 08 - 04:59 PM Lynn Heraud(I think!) had written a song about a man with a beer belly which goes along the lines of "It's many a long year since I've seen my Willie-Oh". Might be quite good for your theme night if you can get hold of it (if you'll pardon the expression!) |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Declan Date: 27 Apr 08 - 04:16 AM Les Barker has written a song on the subject. Starts off something like: Farewell my dearest Roger, you are not the one for me, For my name it is Nancy, and our love can never be, No Henry Dick or Julian, Complete must be the ban, For when your name is Nacy, then Willie is your man. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Herga Kitty Date: 27 Apr 08 - 06:37 AM Declan - I've heard Rosie Longstaff sing the Les Barker song. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Acorn4 Date: 27 Apr 08 - 09:40 AM I seem to remember the Les Barker contains the line:- How can I do a thing, With a Willy with no arms and legs and only half a ring? |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Snuffy Date: 28 Apr 08 - 08:37 AM Acorn4, the line is actually: He'll expect me to be faithful. What reward does virtue bring? A Willy with no arms and legs and only half a ring. I really must start singing it again. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: GUEST,PMB Date: 28 Apr 08 - 12:47 PM There's that bit from Lizzy Wan: There is a child between my two sides, Between my willy and eye... And of coarse: I went to market to buy a cock And me cock did very well please me Every time I fed me cock I fed him all under a tree And me cock went cock a cock a cock a doodle doo And after every farmer's cock did my cock crow Don't forget Celia Learning on the Spinet to Play, though you'll need three voices and a lot of practice. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Acorn4 Date: 28 Apr 08 - 01:33 PM Snuffy, Thanks for the correction on the LB. I heard Rosie sing it at Sidmouth and was trying to remember it from then -the funniest line in a hilarious spoof. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Songs for a 'Willy Night'? From: Tradsinger Date: 28 Apr 08 - 03:20 PM Then there's the well-known folksong "Oh, have you seen my Willie-O" which as all MCs know is a version of the Incontinent Lover. Sorry, couldn't resist. Tradsinger |
