Can anyone here direct me to a website where I can listen to some really good traditional Polish Music?

I understand there's some excellent Mountain Fiddle Music out there.

Cheers
Dick

There's a two CD set of vintage Polish recordings on Yazoo called Fire in the Mountains. Yazoo 7012 and 7013. Highly recommended

A friend brought me back a CD of source recordings from all areas of Poland, made in the period 1960-1990. Much of it is fascinating, even if often hard listening at times. Some of the titles are intriguing: "On the other side of the lake a fish is drowning", and some of the isntruments equally so- the horsehair gutbucket, the wooden trumpet, the lilac leaf. It's at home; if I remember, and if Mudcat is still up tomorrow, I'll try to post details.

There was a documentary on the young group, "The Warsaw Village Band" on telly a few months back. Not 'archive' but I was impressed by their commitment to working with tradition bearers in Poland to find their material. I'd heard them a few years ago and they had a fair bit of airtime on British radio at one point too.

Check this, it's the real deal--"Polish Village Music 1927-1933" on Arhoolie and there are sound clips at the site.

I grew up near Milwaukee, and was used to the polkas and other Polish-American standards (and, of course, Bobby Vinton, the Polish Prince).
I spent a few days in Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains of Poland a couple of years ago, and was really impressed by the music. It sounded somewhat like the "Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices" recordings.

This site - Polish music - is worth checking. (Quite a lot of dead links, but plenty of potentially useful ones - including this Polish Folk Resources)

I have something like the first Cd, but it's called "Songs and Music from Various Regions".   The track it has is "On this side of the lake a fish is drinking water"! My Polish isn't up to deciphering whether the dates are recoring or birth, though I shouldn't imagine they were making field recordings in 1866. Some of the polkas sound very like bluegrass fiddle standards. It's on Polskie Nagrania PNCD 048.

Also, does as anyone know how I can get a replacement copy of Poderti Capeliykhi's cassette. Not great but it brings back memories. I've a feeling it was only available at gigs.

go to this site, scroll down and click on 'clip' oe 'mp3'

have a listen

After that, start exploring the links.

(The clip on the site is nothing like the Polish music I heard growing up.)

There's also a huge following for sea shanties in Poland, curiously enough.

There is a whole selection of archive recordings from Polish radio but it is pretty hardcore (as in 90 year old grannies singing about their goats)

Try putting Brathanki into Youtube for a modern take on the goralle (mountain) music. The music from the Tatra region has more links to Slovakian music than other areas of Poland but the fiddle players are fantastic.

'but it is pretty hardcore (as in 90 year old grannies singing about their goats)'

Then I think we can safely say that it's the real thing....

Oh yes, it's the real thing, and all the better for it.

I just wanted to highlight that it's not quite Warsaw Village band or Brathanki (although I'm also partial to them).

Look up the word muzykanci on youtube and you'll (ventually) find some old archive film of village bands.

Not too traditional but good fun - and note the bodhran style drummer.

One of you Mudcats mentioned music put out by Polish radio. I seem to remember two distinct sets...One of them was issued by Polonia Records (a score and more of volumes). I got one cd from Polart in the US of A. Not sure if that source still offers.

The drum is like a giant tambourine. It is often played with the single end of a stick and the heel of the hand. I'm a bodhran player and I find it pretty hard to adjust the wrist action.

The set of CDs I'm on about is Polskie Radio.

There's an e-mail e-ddress on the back: chopin@radio.com.pl

I just found that by going to youtube and typing in gorali, goral, muzyka goralska, baciary, you can find several videos of Polish Highlander music.

Good idea but Gorale music is VERY distinctive and quite different to other forms in Poland.

All the Polish people I know listen to modern music - either rock, RNB, Techno, etc. Traditional music is unknown amongst them.

For many it is something thy learn in school with dancing classes and 'trad' clothes. It's usually a kind of 'fakelore'.

It's a specific circle of younger people who listen to the more genuine stuff. Generally students of ethnology, theatre etc. There are, however, some pretty hard-core groups of young people researching and recreating/playing older traditional forms.
