Thanks, Bert. Mine is not on a Spinners recording as I thought, but on a tape I can't get at right now. However, much of what Bert has remembered sounds familiar.

I have a version of this on a tape given to me years ago = at least 30+ -- by a college professor of mine -- it was kind of a calypso version..........

Here's the spiritual, as in the Digital Tradition:

ADAM IN THE GARDEN PINNING LEAVES

cho: Oh Eve, where's Adam? (3x)
Adam in the garden pinning leaves.

Well, I know my God is a man of war,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves.
He fought the battle at the Jericho wall,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves.

Well, the first time God called, Adam refused to answer,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves,
Well, the first time God called, Adam refused to answer,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves,

The next time God called, God hollered louder,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves,
The next time God called, God hollered louder,
Adam in the garden pinning leaves.

Regards

That's great, Bert. But is "to" in the lines "Came to angels white as snow", supposed to be "two"?

So asketh the queen of typos.

From memory

Chorus
Adam in the garden a hiding
hiding in the Garden of Eden
Adam in the garden a hiding
Wonder what make a him a hide

Lord said he'd make a man
Lord said he'd make a man
Lord said he'd make a man
make a him according to a plan

Chorus

Took a rib from Adam's side
Took a rib from Adam's side
Took a rib from Adam's side
To make Miss Eve to be his bride

Chorus

'Round the rock came a serpent sly
'Round the rock came a serpent sly
'Round the rock came a serpent sly
and at Miss Eve he wunk his eye

Chorus

Adam he came strolling 'round
Adam he came strolling 'round
Adam he came strolling 'round
spied some peelin's on the ground

Chorus

First he took a little bite
First he took a little bite
First he took a little bite
smacks his lips and says that's nice

Chorus

Came to angels white as snow
Came to angels white as snow
Came to angels white as snow
said you two you've got to go.

Chorus

Níl siad agam fós - ach déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall iad a fháil. Muna bhfuil siad ag Susanne, tá seans maith go mbeidh mé in ann iad a fháil áit eile.

The Spinners discography at chanteycabin.co.uk lists ADAM IN THE GARDEN on "More Folk at the Phil" (Fontana STL5234, 1965), "The Spinners Vol. 3: Adam in the Garden" (Philips 6382 047), and "Ten of the Best" (Fontana SFXL 51).

This sounds like a version of the old black spiritual "Adam in the Garden, Pinning Leaves," which is in the DT. It was collected as a ring-shout many times, from Civil War days to the disc recording era. We have some Lomax recordings of it in the American Folklife Center archive. However, I see you want the Spinners precise version, and we don't have that!

Sung this many years ago at a sinaround - they thought I was singing " 'ad 'em in the garden a-hidin! "

Couldn't locate the lyrics, but there's a copy of a Spinners word book up for grabs on E-bay, fyi.

Don't think so. It is a calypso take off of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden

Is this related to the old "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" song?

The Liverpool Spinners recorded this in 1960's. Would greatly appreciate lyrics.
