Meantime, I have contacted "207", a local TV program, re: featuring us the night before on their local entertainment segment.
Is anyone of our performers able to come in the day before to record a TV session for the evening program?

Emails and PMs went out last night to all performers. If you have not received one, get back to me ASAP. The museum is working on the flyers, posters and website. I need a firm bed count or we will end up pitching tents. Actually Kendall has a pop-up camper we might employ.

The time is now 10AM to 4PM
We are thinking of making 10am to 11 am for children. Songs, prizes, demos - to build an early morning crowd. Anyone interested in performing then?

Flyers will be ready this week so I can give a supply to anyone who comes on the 14th for the song circle.

We need these put up everywhere and anyone along with stacks for motels, hotels, schools, town halls, etc.

This weekend, Jacqui and I will finish the schedule for performers, the posters, and some plans for the Children's Hour.
We will need volunteers for a thousand different things.

I am going a-begging to see if I can drum up some sponsors. $50 to have your company featured on the posters and at the festival. If anyone is interested, contact me.

Peter and Joann suggested a craft table for kids. It will allow us to advertise a Children's Hour to build the early morning attendance while keeping the music adult. Sailors' Valentines, decorative eye patches, fish prints. Simple, inexpensive but fun.
Tiny to small sea shells needed. Glitter, sequins, small stickers, etc. Let me know if you have anything to contribute.

I can't actually get to their site through any of the normal means, which suggests that either they're busy updating it and took it off-line briefly or that their web provider is having a problem. Just a little aside here.

This is the first time this event will have taken place and no money has been available to pay performers. Mary put this thread on the 'Cat in the hopes of attracting those of our friends who just like to make music to come for the day and have fun. She has been astounded at the number of performers who have ASKED to be included, even knowing that the only reward that they will get is the joy of making music with other like minded souls.

It was felt that it would be unfair to ask any performer to take part, giving up most of a summer weekend when they could be making a living, to come and play for free. Now we have an unexpected abundance of performers and a very tight schedule, which we are still having to tweek to make sure that we can get finished by 4.00pm, as there is a wedding taking place a bit later and the whole site needs to be cleared for that.

If, as looks likely, this event is a real success, there is a very strong possibility that it will be repeated next year and, maybe, even enlarged. Right now we are taking baby steps and trying not to get too ambitious so that we can get it going well enough to warrant a repeat.

Our apologies go out to anyone who felt that they should have been included - I trust that the above explains why.

An addition to Jacqui's comments:

I did not feel it was right to ask individual performers and especially the Portsmouth Festival performers to appear at the Portland event both because of the money issue and the "hijacking" aspect.

There were no invitations sent other than the thread on Mudcat (God bless Max). Hopefully, this is the first of an annual event. Next year there will be some money and some experience, maybe even two days.

I am genuinely thrilled at the response. Needless to say the museum is thrilled. It is a small museum with brilliant exhibits that go unnoticed by most. I volunteer when I can in the gift shop because the view of Casco Bay is stunning. I love it there.

So, we will all have an amazing day of wonderful music and stories. The museum will be open for free so the public can get an introduction to its exhibits. Next year, when there is cash, this year's performers will be invited back and we will see where we are going.

My hope is that this will be seen as a sister festival to Portsmouth and both groups will benefit. But for now we have to get through August 2.

Note to Marc: Arriving drunk is OK just don't carry an open bottle.

Outdoor Music Festival, Featuring Gordon Bok and Other Maritime Musicians, Scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd, at Portland Harbor Museum in South Portland

On Saturday, August 2nd, a maritime music festival will be held in South Portland at Portland Harbor Museum. The celebration will feature live performances by Gordon Bok, Castlebay, David Jones, David Coffin, Marc Bernier and many others. This free outdoor concert will be held from 10am-4pm on the grounds surrounding Portland Harbor Museum. It will bring internationally-known musicians to a stunning venue overlooking Portland Harbor at Spring Point. The result will be a spirited day of lively and energetic performances from artists who will bring to life New England's seafaring heritage through song.

More than twenty performers will be participating this year. Gordon Bok, known for his rich voice and fluid guitar work, will highlight the program. Bok grew up in Maine. He worked on vessels as a deckhand and mate, and in the process learned many folk tunes, ballads, stories, and sea songs.

The duo, Castlebay, have been performing along the eastern seaboard and in the UK for twenty years. Julia Lane is an award winning Celtic Harper and one of the world's foremost proponents of maritime music on the harp. Fred Gosbee is known for his historical and humorous ballads.

Kendall Morse will also take part. Kendall is well known as a Maine humorist and folk singer and also as part of the Morse Brothers bluegrass band, which also included his brothers, Erlon and Les. He has issued three CDs, Lights Along the Shore, Seagulls and Summer People, and Beginner's Luck.

Admission to the festival is free, although donations to both the museum and the performers will be appreciated. In the event of rain, the festival will be held at South Portland High School.

Relax. I have been in charge of the Working Waterfront at Clearwater's Revival for the past 10 years.

The best you can do is set up contingency plans, get good volunteers and relax.

This year, when the weather packed us in, my cocoordinator and I were at lunch. I got on the walkie, called my crew and told them to get the area shut down. People around us were amazed that we did not go rushing down to our area but simply finished our lunches.

The point is the competence of your people. 99% of everything is prep.

Directions
From the Maine Turnpike (I-95)

Exit from I-95 onto I-295 (I-95 Exit 44 from the south and I-95 Exit 52 from the north). Take I-295 Exit 6A (Forest Avenue South). After exiting, follow the signs to Route 77, which becomes State Street. From this point, follow the directions from Downtown Portland (below).


From Downtown Portland

Take State Street (it's one way) and go over the Casco Bay Bridge. At the traffic signal at the end of the bridge, proceed straight onto Broadway. (Broadway also goes to the right, but straight will take you to the museum.) Continue on Broadway until it ends at Spring Point Marina (approximately 1.5 miles). Turn right at the stop sign onto Benjamin Pickett Street and turn left at the next stop sign (Fort Road). Follow Fort Road through the SMCC Campus until it ends at the water. The museum is on your right.


Eric, I'm not sure what's the best route from NYC to Porthsmouth, NH but from Portsmouth Rt 95 is your best route north to Portland.
Portsmouth os just about 15 minutes north of where 95 & 495 intersect so if there's a better route coming up from NYC & it puts you on 495 it's an easy drive from that intersection.

Now if you're coming up Friday, there's alway the Press Room session in Portsmouth which starts around 4:00 & goes till 9:00 pm.

That goes for any other folks attending the festival, the Press Room session would be an ideal take & way to warm up for the following day. Maybe some kind of arrangments for floor or bed space can be found.

Actually I'm surprised that no one has metion the Press Room session seeing that there are so many performers attending this event.

There might be a little confusion when approaching Broadway (in South Portland) after crossing the Casco Bay Bridge; you're really be veering left when you turn onto Broadway and then you'll want to stay in the center lane so you don't end up somewhere else such as Cape Elizabeth (to the right) or downtown South Portland (to the left).

Another landmark at the Festival site is the Spring Point Light House, at the end of a long breakwater. The Portland Harbor Museum (a low brick building) is also adjacent to the Festival Site.

We're planning to bring our Blue Peter flag to plant at the Festival site as well.

Don't forget to bring an oar, so we can muster a marching inland troop!

Our sound crew will be looking for where to set up at 9 am sharp. It takes us about an hour to set up the system and test it and we don't want to lose any time wondering where to set up. We would also appreciate a schedule of performers, and any details of their sound requirements so we may better accommodate their needs. We are flexible but any information would be appreciated.

Not wanting to be a pain in the keester (I do not envy *any* festival organizers their jobs)but I wonder why the "schedule will be available on site on the morning" and not right now. I am playing at another festival in September and the schedule is online and available for all to see as of a few weeks ago. I understand this is a first effort with this Maritime fest but I do not think it is unreasonable for performers (and the audience) to know well ahead of time what to expect.

It might make difference to those going to catch their favorite performer rather tha wade through the wholee list only to find out the 2 or 3 that they are really coming to catch aren't on till late in the day. For example, I see Feadan perform almost every Tuesday evening, he & his are really good but I may not want to arrive at 10:00 am to hear them when I can get an hour's more sleep or 2 hrs depending on who on after them. Of course I'd be passing up breakfast & Mom always made me sing for my sup, so when's breakfast & where do I get in line.
I know when I perform (at 3:20) but I don't know when Feadan performs & I may ask him for back up with his pipes but I'm not gonna ask him to hang out till 3:20 on my account.
That's a pretty reasonable request espically for performers, if all performers know when they're on then the list & times are available, I think it is to every ones benifit so they can pick & chose, espically when some are coming from so far away.

For Saturday PM we have Sausages with peppers and onions, Curry, chili, assorted cheeses, fruits and veggies, chips, beer, desserts, wine, single malt, single malt, more single malt and whatever else walks in the door.
Breakfast and lunch for performers and volunteers at the site.
GUEST - get a name or a life or both but don't waste our time here. I am housing about 10 people, feeding 40, entertaining hopefully hundreds. The entertainers know exactly when they will be on. Come and enjoy the music or stay away.
MaineDog - great. The kitties are in panic mode - I am not sure what Micca did did to terrify them but they preferred a thunderstorm under the car to a dry bed indoors.
The museum has all their ducks in a row including the unexpected bonus of a tented area set up for a Sunday wedding. We have music, porta-potties, food, drink, more music, CDs,etc.
Mostly we have music and talented musicians willing to share.

The problem is that there have been a lot of requests to know when just one particular performer is going to be on. No names, no pack drill.

A decision was made not to divulge that information and have a large influx of people to this FREE concert just for that particular stretch of time. It was decided that that would be unfair to everyone involved in the event.

This is a concert to highlight the music we love and to raise the profile of the museum.

I'm more worried about the weather for Saturday (some forecasts predict rain, some a 6 hour window of hazy sun), and would welcome clarification of when and how volunteer staff and performers would be informed if there were a decision to move from Spring Point to the South Portland High School (the back-up festival site).

As sound volunteers we have thousands of dollars of equipment to be concerned about if there be rain, this in addition to our desire to set up and manage sound in a timely fashion.

We would rather know what the plan is later today rather than 9 am on Saturday. Others such as performers or audience may share that concern.

Sorry Feadan. I had just finished dealing with several mini-crises both festival related and personal. No excuse for my rudeness. I had not seen that you signed your name and still don't know who you are. I needed to step back and take a breath before I went off on an innocent. Kendall, on the other hand, is fair game.

The Museum requested that the schedule not be posted. They are concerned about turn out -as are we- and were afraid that people would show up for their favorite musician's half hour and then leave. Not fair to the performers and not good for the museum.

The Museum also makes the final call on the rain site - they are paying for it and as I have said many times we have no budget. Money is trickling in from my Begathon but not enough to cover everything. Yesterday was supposed to be rainy all day. The rain did not start until 4PM.

A member of the museum board who organizes many outdoor events recommended to Mark that we not resort to the rainsite. The whole point of this event is to get people into the museum. I am as concerned about the well-being of the equipment as I am about someone getting electrocuted.

Poor Kendall. And bless Tom Hall and Peter Sousa. Tom calls twice a week and goes over everything. He and Linn know what goes on behind the scenes. Peter emails and makes me laugh. Jacqui runs interference and has done an amazing job of coordinating things, people, places.

Today, we have to make a decision about the rain site. Once I have a firm answer, I will post here and Jacqui and I will email performers.

We have had potential sponsors ask for a report on how Saturday plays out. They are looking towards next year which will be very different from this year. We have learned a lot.

So again - thank you to all who have voluteered their time, talent, equipment, advice and support. If I am at any time sarcastic, nasty, cranky or otherwise unpleasant tell me to F off and I will do the same for you in the spirit of love. And if someone takes your turkey sandwich leaving you with vegetarian cheese, take it up with Jacqui -I am begging you.

I agree it would be wonderful if we could be outdoors - though I do confess to being a little concerned as sound crew about the part where I'm sitting on a huge pile of wires while lightning flashes and waves crash over the top of the little parasol I'm using to try to keep the board dry....

With a bit of luck the weather pattern will stabilize into something pleasant later today and any nasty weather will hold off until we're all safely at SINSULL's after the show, exploring the single malt. :)

We are going to Barry Finn's set and standing up in the front row so no one can see him.   

Barry...being from Gloucester, I thought that Micca was a mineral that was used in insulating material.

The local paper (promised an invite back to my house to meet and interview some performers) has outdone itself. A top of the page listing on the weekly calendar, a story on the top right page further on and ANOTHER mid-page in a music section. All glowing promises of an afternoon of incredible music, an ideal outdoors location and the the wonders of the museum and the Snow Squall.
The museum phone has not stopped ringing since about 10AM. One call from a "strange" man from Washington who was packing his car and scheduled to arrive Friday night so that he could have a good seat Saturday.
Which one of our beloved loonies is that? And does he need a bed?

I'm staying home tonight. I have a voice... barely. Actually, the singing voice is OK, but the speaking voice is a bit iffy. I think a voice coach might tell me to speak in a more 'musical' voice. I'm also still recovering from a fortnight of fun up north. I want to be able to sing on Saturday, not to mention enjoy the party afterwards, even if I'll have to eschew booze because I'm driving.

Van is packed with sound equipment, tarps, contractor garbage bags, and Roll & Go miscellaneous stuff. We're as ready as we can be, and really looking forward to a great maritime festival.

Last weekend was our Richmond Days Festival, which had a nautical theme as well. We really lucked out on two glorious days, and everyone is subsequently feeling great (but tired). There is plenty of room for improvement but we have definitely expanded the local festival to a higher level.

It really would be nice to know what you were bringing for sound. We are bringing enough so that 9 mics will be operational, with two monitors so performers can hear themselves.

When I called the museum today, I was told to bring all of my own food because they hadn't been able to arrange for any concessions. Water and soda only will be sold. Bring own chair. After thoroughly exploring the So. Portland bus service, I can arrive an hour early or an hour late and must leave at 4:55 or stay at SMCC until Mon. Guess why I'm driving.

Back at my house. Two separate sessions - one front room; one back. I am exhausted but all is well. The festival was wonderful. The Board has requested and audience with Jacqui and me. The music was incredible. We had a very good time. One couple really did drive from Wash DC just for the event.

Judy and I just got back home after joining the party at Mary's house for another glorious sing and chat. We were worried mostly about the weather, and the bad weather held off until the evening.

I'm sure the party will continue going until the wee hours of the morning.

It was foggy in the morning but quite pleasant in the afternoon, and the view of Portland harbor can't be beat. At one point we were distracted, during Mark Bernier's set by the Cosmos, a giant super tanker blasting its horn and backing out into the channel, a tug helped push her nose out to sea and off she went, all in slow motion.

Those of us doing sound had a merry time trying to keep a step ahead of the performers.

All the performers were in high spirits, and the audience seemed very appreciative, and even some joggers and beachcombers were drawn in to listen.

Anyway, thanks again to Mary and Jacqui for having the courage and determination to make this festival get off the ground.

See you all again next year!

Just got home. What I saw of the festival was good, and I felt good about my 2-song set. I missed a bunch because I didn't get there until 11:30. The party was absolutely wonderful (finally heard Gordon Bok doing "Capt Kendall and the Kitchen"), and there were TWO rooms full of music.

I got back home, courtesy of Deb and Tom, at 1.15am, in the middle of a very noisy thunderstorm that lit up my way through the house to allow me to leave the lights off and thus not disturb Kendall and Gordon, who had cried 'uncle' a lot earlier in the evening.

We all up now and just about to head over chez SINSULL for breakfast.

Yesterday was wonderful - we all had the best time. What a kick to have such a group of perfomers all enjoying themselves like that. One of the highlights was John Roberts and Davids Jones and Coffin singing together. David Coffin's daighter had the most incredible voice for an 11 year old.

It just goes to show that the old saying, "Most of the things you worry about never happen" is true.
Jacqui and Mary did a bang up job of pulling this off, and I'm glad I was able to be a small part of it. Someone whom I respect a great deal said that the poem I did made his day. The Loch Arcre by John Masefield is one of my favorite poems, and I always have a hard time getting through it.
I was very impressed with Dave Coffin and his daughter, Lenea (not sure of spelling). I'd never seen either of them perform before so it was a very pleasant surprise.

Good time was had by both Lady Hillary and yours truly. Great organising. Good continuous music [really nice job one the sound].

Adventure, the reason you don't get sick is that you spend a lot of time on salt water--the best disinfectant in the world. I used to live on a schooner with a leak over my berth. Worked in a hospital. While all around me were dropping like flies, that salt drip kept me healthy.

I believe my kazoo got left at the party. May stop by on the way South. If not, hold it for me for next year and I'll get it then.

Met a lot of catters previously know just by tag. Had a really good song swap and will be forwarding a lot of stuff to people once I get the A to D connection on my home computer doing what I want to do.

The party was solid fas'. We planned to depart about 9 or 9:30 but were so involved we did not get gone until 10:30.

Thank you to Jacqui and Sinsull, and all others who worked and performed. What a lovely day and evening it was! I met many excellent musicians for the first time, and still got time with old friends.

Thanks to Ranger 1 who met me at the door and gave me a hug and directions, too. That gal is a peach!

Only thing was, I was still hungry for music when I left this morning. I'll have to listen to Kendall's and John's cds- my reward to myself for singing. Jeri- thanks for delivering Bruce's new cd to me. I'm going to be ringing with music for some time to come.

Five Bitters from Gloucester which led out the Festival at 10 am performed a great set with impeccable harmonies. They get extra credit from the sound crew for performing so well while we were doing final adjustments on mic levels at the board.

We generally need at least an hour to set up our sound system and test out each mic and the monitor level. Through no fault of the organizers, we only had 30 minutes to do that. The folks setting up the staging were half an hour late and their manager should be advised of that fact.

I would have loved to have heard some more songs by Jeri, and she needs to make a recording (our offer still stands to produce a demo CD, at her house or ours).

Linn and Tom should really submit an application to next year's Mystic Sea Music Festival; they are wonderful traditional style singers.

Barry took the trouble to introduce some songs I've never heard him sing before which I found intriguing, and Barry Finn needs to to some more follow-up with the Mystic folks.

Mark Bernier is always a joy to listen to; I love his alternative musical setting for "Blow Ye Winds in the Morning" and his story about singing it aboard some yacht and then being asked to sing "Blow Ye Winds in the Morning" where upon he sang the more popular setting and no one was aware that he had sung them one after the other.

I could listen to Gordon Bok all afternoon, but this time he even told an intergalectic story about some trawlermen out in space comparing notes on where on earth they might scoop up some deer; one never knows where his fancy will wander!

I'd never heard (or met) Holly Torsey before but she certainly has a strong well-honed voice, and she only lives about 20 minutes from our home in Richmond.

Well it certinally was a user friendly festival. Very easy on the folks that came to here & on the folks that came to sing.
Jacqui & espically Mary did a wonderful job as orginizers & as hosts.
I'm sure they'll suceed in getting the museum's approval for next year. For a freebe there was quite an arry of talent & plenty of it, they couldn't have done much better at any of the top maritime festivals You go girls, good on ya, you did exceedingly well. It was a treat & a pleasure to see & hear the bunch that came to sing & the the bunch that came to listen. I took pictures of most of the earlier performers but slacked off towards the end when I had to get prepared for my own set. Hopefully the pic's came out but seeing as I counldn't even figure out how to unstrap the camera from the case I'm not betting on the pictures. I had the pleasure of being the last performer of the day (aside from the final all hands sing), thanks to who ever schedule that. I don't think I'll ever again be able to say that so many great performers opened for me & I don't think I'll be able to say that I close for so many wonderful singers.
I had to leave the after party a bit to soon, glad to hear that the singing started to flow, I was getting a bit to tired to have weathered the drive if I had stayed any longer. As it was I started to nod off a bit by the time I got home & only woke a couple hours ago. I'm ready to go again, good thing there's a session on tonight.

We got good feedback on site from Mark Thompson, the museum director, and he is all fired up for next year, as are all the performers that I personally spoke to.

This event went from idea to reality in about four months and since neither Mary nor myself had any real experience of putting something like this together I think that we were both rather astounded at how smoothly it went. Kendall has occasionally to drag me down from the ceiling when I float up there on the almost permanent high I've developed since Saturday.

We will be sitting down with Mark for a debrief, which will give us the basis for next year. There will be some tweaking to be done and we may look at possibly doing a two day festival next year, if that looks doable. I have already spoken to other people who can help out, particularly with publicity, which was a major bugbear this year. We know that we will do better with a little more help from the right people and we do have some great friends out there to call upon.

Mary said it right when she told Kendall that this was, basically, all down to him. He introduced both Mary and me to his friends in the folk world and they are the people who came and gave so much of themselves on Saturday. Without Kendall none of this would have happened.

Many thanks to all who took part. You were all just stupendously good, both performers and volunteers alike. I'd just like to say a special thank you to Trubrit, the first and most generous sponsor we had prior to the event and to Peter and Joanne Souza who made such a generous donation on the day. Ranger1 spent most of her day dashing here and there, even leaving the site to run an errand or two. Becca72 manned the CD stall all day, and got it so well organised you'd have thought she did it professionally! Some of our performers also got involved in off stage help - I'm thinking, in particular, of Joanne with the children's craft table and Maeve, who just helped out wherever there was a need.

There were also volunteers from the museum, helping with car parking, setting up the site and the food preparation. Mary even managed to lure one guy from her office to help out with the craft table.

To all who were there - thank you for making it such a good day and so stress free for Mary and me.

THOUGHT I'd gotten "enough" sleep Saturday night (since I pooped out of the party around quarter to eleven-ish -- right after EBarnacle and Lady Hillary left), but by the time we arrived home on Sunday I could barely keep my eyes open. (Glad Tom was driving!) Got sheets into the washer, then shut my eyes "for a minute" -- and awoke an hour and a half later.

What a lovely day (weekend) of music! I think overcast (even with a bit of fog and the occasional light mist) was definitely preferable to unrelenting sun beating down -- there was still enough UV to redden my face a bit. (But my eyes weren't as fried as I'd feared, thank goodness! Silly me -- both sunglasses and sunscreen were in the car not far away.) The views of Casco Bay, the fortifications, the ferries, some striking sailing vessels and, of course, the lighthouse gave the festival some of the best ambience around. And the salt air contributed to the maritime feel.

Though I've thanked them both semi-privately, here's my voice added to what should be a loud huzzah of thanks to Mary and Jacqui for ALL the work (and all the learning experience) needed to get this festival off the ground and to everyone else who added their efforts to making the day such a success.

Charlie, Judy, Nor -- your sound is THE BEST! Speaking as a performer, it is such a joy to know the sound is in your tasteful and folk-experienced hands.

Wanted to hear more of everyone -- what a collection of some of my favorite performers! But it was especially good to see a few we seldom see on stage -- Maeve, Jeri, Micca.

At the party afterwards, it really would have been nice to split myself in two and be in both rooms full of music and conversation.

Linn and Tom - those bi-weekly phone calls to listen to me bitch, vent, and be terrified without having to get an earful of advice or worse yet "You should haves..." were a godsend. Thank you for being such good friends.

Peter and Joann - your generous support with the emails, phone calls, and constant humor were also a godsend. You are genuinely good people. Jacqui and I try to hate Joann for being so beautiful but she is just as beautiful inside and we can't. Peter - thank you for not playing with the rolls.

The Performers:
When this first started the plan was an hour or two of a few friends doing the equivalent of a song circle to amuse ourselves and anyone who showed up. It grew like Topsy when all of you so generously donated your time (read: your weekend). Right up until Saturday morning, Mark was questioning whether any or all of the musicians advertised would really show up. Thank you for making the event happen. In no particular order: Marc Bernier, Roll and Go, Fivebitters, Jeri Corlew (brilliant Jeri),Holly (yes - the voice of an angel - one couple on their way out, turned as you started, husband said in wonder "Wow, she is good", and they stayed to listen),Micca Patterson, Captain Morse, Gordon Bok (holy crap! Gordon Bok!), John Roberts (almost as sexy as Kendall), David Jones (had the audience enthralled), David Coffin (and daughter, Leenia(SP?)) - house concert, please, Barry Finn (brought the house down Barry), Tom and Linn - always brilliant. I don't have the list handy - please tell me I haven;t forgotten someone...thank you all!

Thank you more for filling my house with music and laughter and friendship. I missed most of the fun in the front room. But finally got to hear "Captain Kendall and the Kitchen" performed by Gordon Bok, himself. John Roberts reprised the Indian Neck doowop hour that I missed by sleeping. And then followed it with a blues guitar and song set.

The volunteers with the thankless job of staying in one place while the rest of us mingled. Mike Mushlin from PowerPay especially - thank you for being so generous not only at this event but in everything you touch.
Thank you to all the museum volunteers for your help and infinite sense of humor. Linc and his lady, Kathy, Ann (who thinks she is a longshoreman hauling around heavy tables and the like), Laurel (who smiled through it all), and the poor lady left to work the parking lot (I apologize I don't remember your name. You disappeared too soon).
Becca - thank you. Not only did you spend eight hours at the CD table, you kept the count and the money right.
I am not sure who kept the kitchen and performers' room in shape but periodically I went in to make sure all was well - it was. Thank you.

Hadley, Rebecca and Mark - thank you most of all for allowing us to come and play. I think we have a handle on what needs improvement. But the truth is we really pulled off a very special event. I am sorry you did not make it back to my house to receive a toast. Jacqui and will treasure your gift - a beautiful thought.

Mrs. Morse - I tried so hard to dislike you when you suddenly appeared and usurped the Captain. But the two of us ride the same brand of broomstick. I love you dearly, treasure our friendship and consider you my second-best friend after Kendall. Good work, lady. Your practical approach, enthusiasm, organizational skills, and when necessary bitchiness kept all of us in line and on target. I think we should continue our post-meeting dinners with wine while we plan next year.

Crazy man from across the ocean who has shared all of my sorrows and joys for years and always managed to make me smile. Although occasionally I could set him on fire. Thank you to the bride who thoughtfully left her very expensive tent to house the craft and CD tables. It screwed up the stage placement but allowed for some shade.

And lastly, thank you to all the people who braved the weather to be part of our audience and their generous donations. There really was a couple from Washington DC who left their contact information with the museum and Gordon. They wanted to learn more about the FSGW. They drove up to hear Gordon Bok and were thrilled with the wealth of talent who "accompanied" him.

I still shudder every time a thundercloud drifts over. It's all so stressful being so vulnerable to the whim of the weather gods when one is committed to an outdoor event. I had made a private sacrifice to Boja, the old Thunder God from the part of Ethiopia I was teaching in in 1967-68. Boja doesn't get much attention nowadays, and may have been appreciative to the horn of honey wine I offered him. Perhaps, we should make sure he is not neglected next year.

Today we were able to re-launch the Boston Whaler, the outboard fired up, and the rain held off for the entire afternoon despite more dire predictions. Now it's nestled at its mooring and my brother and his family have plans to take it cruising tomorrow, when they predict splendid weather...

On behalf of the sound crew, we appreciate your thanks and you are more than welcome in return. Most of our set-up worked very well from where we were listening, and when it wasn't working well we were fairly fast at tracking down the problem.

The next major sea songs concert I know of will be at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Sunday, August 17th, 7:30 pm, and will feature Castlebay and Roll & Go. We're hoping that our final concert of the summer will generate an exceptionally good turnout. The Long Reach Hall is a good performing space and those who come early may enjoy the exhibits at the Museum which was in fact an old shipyard.

Oh, dear me, the mill is running fast!

My suggestion is a minimum lead-time of three months for planning and publicity, which would place the event in November which unfortunately is a marginal month for a festival. So maybe it best be done in mid-October; no sane organizer wants to compete with Halloween.

I'd be happy to bounce this off Roll & Go. It would be real fun to work up some mill songs, and some general drinking songs which we already know a good many.

I looked at the photos before I went to work this morning. Hmmm...I usually don't see too many of myself because I'm usually the one behind the camera, but in this batch, I made a major discovery. Because my mouth turns down at the corners, when my face is "at rest" I look grouchy. I'm not a grouchy person!!! (Nor even curmudgeonly, of which Kendall says a woman can't be a curmudgeon anyway.)

So....

I spent the day (in the car, at work, at odd moments, in the car again) practicing what FEELS like a smile, but just looks like my mouth is a straight line (at least not curved down) and lifts my cheeks (not THOSE cheeks!) and, at least, makes me look happy.

Arghhh! When did my face start frowning?!? My brain hasn't been!

(I'm also willing to brush off and trot out "Doffing Mistress", "Poverty Knock" , Bread and Roses" and whatever other millworker songs I know.)

I would strongly advise against planning anything for this calendar year. I'm going to be busy with the Portsmouth Festival until the first of October. Then comes the Getaway, follwed too quickly ny Halloween. Then comes snow season.

However, May 2 is a Saturday, and the day after the internationl holiday of the working class might be appropriate.

Well , it was a week yesterday since things went off in Portland.
What a treat. Mary and Jacqui....you both deserve grand kudos for putting this event together. And for your hospitality over the weekend thankyou so very much....although a couple of us signed off in the wee morning hours....a great time was had by all. Hope that this can be done again next year...assistance will come quicker as people got a chance to see what went on, where it was and who attended. I got very hungry on the way home and even the rubber fish started to look good to me. No ketchup so I passed. We stopped by to sing at two other events on the way home and made it in by 10 pm on Sunday evening. This was the definite start of something good that will and can happen next year and for many years to follow. Congratulations and thanks for the invite. Lots of really good things happened to lots of good people last weekend....and thanks from "Fivebitter" too.

we're both still pinching ourselves at how well it all went last weekend.

By rights we should have had at least one "oh shit!" moment but we didn't.

We have learned a lot from last week and are now starting to think about what will happen next year. We will choose people to help who have expertise in specific areas - we already have a few people who we know are good at publicity and whose experience will be drawn upon. We know that we can trust those people to do the job and that will be one less task for us.

First thing is sponsorship. We already have a couple of sponsors and will be looking around the area to see who we can persuade to come on board as well.

Just wanted to say how impressed I was with the way that you guys have managed to pull this all together. I read through the thread after the event or I'd have been sending you positive thoughts for success and good weather, but it looks like you had plenty of help and encouragement. It sounds like you've all had a lot of hard work, but also a great deal of fun & this has given you a firm footing into Next Year. Well done to all the organisers, performers & supporters!

Highly unlikely to be close to the Getaway, Terry. The Portsmouth (NH) festival takes that spot and has done so for many years. Curmudgeon can tell you more about that. We're still thinking about a regular date for the future.

The Portsmouth festival is much larger and established. Contact Tom Hall (curmudgeon) about available spots. Carole and Andrew are appearing this year. I hope Hissyfit will appear next. We are a few months away from setting a date for Portland but it will not be anytime near the Getaway.

Lady Hillary and I had a ball and then proceeded to visit friends around the great state of Maine until Friday AM. Who called for all that rain? It didn't stop raining until we hit Rhode Island to go sailing.
