Once't upon a time, Jeff Davis and I had a brief correspondence after he had written in his column in the Folk Alliance newsletter that he didn't ever intend to record an album because he didn't think he had anything new or different to offer. I begged to differ.

Today I was pleased to see via a review on the Musical Traditions site that he has finally made an album, called "Some Fabulous Yonder", with the help of Howie Bursen (banjo), Brian Peters (button accordion, concertina and guitar), Jay Rosenburg (drum, vocals) and Chris Rua (cane flute, vocals).

However, I was annoyed to find that it seems like it's only available from Harbourtown Records in the U.K.

Dick Greenhaus, can you help??

~ Becky in Tucson

Sorry, that's Harbourtown Records.

Harbourtown is the main source I understand, but I believe that Brian Peters also has a few copies for sale...

It's a brilliant cd, well worth the effort of acquiring. Many of us have waited too long for Jeff to get down to recording!

There's another review at www.netrhythms.co.uk by the way.

Thanks MoorleyMan, I do indeed have some copies here, but since Becky is in Tucson it wouldn't be any easier for her to order from me than from Harbourtown. Becky, if you'd like to PM me with your email address I will put you directly in touch with Jeff.

If I'm allowed an opinion - as session musician - I think it's a great CD too. Here's the review MoorleyMan referred to.

Jeff will be visiting England next February to play at Cheltenham Folk Festival and various other dates tbc.

For those who haven't heard Jeff there is a track from the CD and a couple of live tracks recorded with Brian Peters a couple of years back at our club in Walthamstow on the Harbourtown website. It's not easy to get to from the link above so try here

Well worth catching him, hope we get him back to Walthamstow in February

Thanks for the nice comments on the CD. Dick Greenhaus at Camsco does have some copies. That is probably the easiest way to get them in North America.

Glad to hear it, Jeff.

You and Brian (and all) have a wonderful time at Folk Music Week (Pinewoods). I have fond memories of my times there (and banjo class with you!). I hope to get back there again sometime.

Saro - yes, I will bring a copy to Chips. I doubt whether his 2009 tour will take him any further West than London, I'm afraid (apart from Cheltenham FF, of course). I bet he'd love to do the gig at Wherwell but I think Lewes has him booked the first Thursday.

Jeff,
I did not know about this. Truly, I am looking forward to getting it. Besides all that is said in the quoted and linked-to reviews, I must say that it's your TASTE, both musically and textual, that always makes me delighted when you put your stamp on the old songs.

All the best to you,

Art Thieme

Jeff- I'm tickled to know you have put out some of your own pictures to hang on the wall. I'll contact Dick Greenhaus if there is no west coast source. Are you likely to get out to or near B I (like Seattle!) anytime?   Carter

I'm mystified that all these comments have suddenly surfaced in May 2008 - I bought a copy of the CD (and very enjoyable it is too) in August 2007 at Whitby Festival ... some 10 months ago!

Jeff does have a tendency to keep his lamp under a bushel. That he has no retail outlet in his homeland except for a few unadvertised copies at Camsco might speak to that.

Each song Jeff sings is a glimpse of the past. He will present you with a portrait of a long-forgotten sailor returning from sea, a soldier going to war or a lumberjack in his shanty camp. Scenes now found only in sepia photographs are brought back to life, vividly coloured by the notes from his fiddle and banjo.

I was very pleased to get to know Jeff & his music better at the recent NEFFA in Massachusetts. He brings unique gifts to the old songs. As always, it was a pleasure to see his friend, Dave Ruch. Seems to me that Pamela Goddard was somewhere in the mix, too. ;)

best,

Barbara

True enough, Irene. It's taken this long to work out a way of arranging some kind of distribution in the UK - through the good folks at Harbourtown - so only recently did the reveiw copies get sent out.

But better a belated Mucdat thread than none. The comments above are testimony to the level of affection and respect that Jeff's music inspires amongst those who know about it. He deserves to be better known.
