Subject: How to put a song on Myspace?

Well, I expect everyone in the world knows the answer to this, except me. But I'm pretty stupid, and I started a Myspace page and put a CD in my computer and had a go. After about a million attempts I gave up. The CD is in the computer all right, and I go through the Myspace instructions as best I can, browse and locate the relevant track in my computer, and tell Myspace to upload. And after a bit of cogitation it always says it doesnt like my file, delete it and try again.
What am I doing wrong? Myspace says something about uploading mp3 files...maybe my song isn't an mp3 file? If so, how do I turn it into one? Or maybe my song is too big, too many bytes?(though you'd think Myspace would tell me if that was the case). But if it is too big, how do you make it smaller?
Somebody out there must have had the same problems as me to start with, but has now cracked the secret. Do share!

Songs on a regular CD are not in MP3 format. There are several ways to convert them, but it does require some sort of software capable of doing the conversion. (This is commonly called 'ripping' a CD to MP3 format.) Ordinarily, you 'rip' and put the MP3 files to a directory on your own computer, then upload from there.

Greg...I am not sure how familar you are with using software, but you would need to get something such as Simon suggests, or one of half a dozen other programs to do the conversion. One frequently mentioned 'free' one is Aud\ograbber at this site. It is free, pretty easy and works.

Failing that, you'd need someone to do the tricks for you.

If, when you follow the "open file " dialog to upload your file, you are navigating to the CD, then what people said about MP3 files is the answer.

You need a special program (but they are plentiful and free) to "rip" the audio from your CD to a file on the PC. The program may offer the option of saving in MP3 format in which case your problem is solved; alternatively it will save it as something.WAV and you'll need another program (also plentiful and free) to convert that to MP3 format.

Google for:
CD audio ripper
and
MP3 encoder

Simon, et al: a million thanks. Life is so easy when we have a resource like MUdcat where nice clever people are waitring to give so generously of their time and expertise.
And to prove it, this ought to be the brass section of a song off our second album, that I have just been playing about with, re-editing

I have had problems with this too, it seems much easier to put video on the myspace page.

Well, that's cracked the technology. I'll start pimping up the Myspace page a bit and adding a few pix and videos and things. Thanks all.

Well, it's a Bahamian/New Orleans brass style arrangement of the Caribbean shanty Shallow Brown. I might put the vocal up there as well, now I have cracked this Myspace technology. This was from the second Boat Band album(all sea-songs and tunes), shortly to be reissued in glorious technicolour on one of these new-fangled compact discs.

New Orleans funeral even...

Thanks Greg (and other contributors) for this thread - Frogette sorted out a Myspace site for me last year, and Doug Bailey has agreed I can put up tracks from the Wildgoose CD I made with MCP when I've worked out how to do the techie bits....

Doug's clearing out the Wildgoose stock cupboard, so I'll be picking up the remaindered Dark the Days at Chippenham next weekend - collector's items!

I like it, but is it really just 28 seconds long, or is something "sticking" after it plays that much?

Well, when I put it on it played right through. But I often get that sticking when I play Myspace songs, and especially Youtube videos. Is it something to do with storage ca[pacity in our computers or something? I can't understand much of this stuff, to be honest.

Funny, I had two tunes up and running, and now they have both vanished. What's going on then? When I go into the song managing bit, it claims I've still got two up. But there's nothing there. Computers. Bah!

I've put another tune on, then it's gone stuck on me! I think I'm allowed six, but I've only managed to get four on so far. I shall persevere.Sixty something people have listened to tunes already. That's interesting: where do they come from?

I, like the guest above, am confused and would welcome any advice or observations on the following. I recieve attachments on my e-mail for songs or text and the result of downloading is in "Wordpad" in "gobbledegook"(that is Greek, Russian and a very wide range of symbols). My system is "Windows ME". Is there any way to convert the offending nonsense into the correct English format?

With all the technologies at our fingertips, I can still sometimes see the wisdom of going back to the old days of oral dissemination of music...

Keep it live!

Frogprince: I would love to come to Michigan.Particularly as I am Cornish, and the most interesting thing I know about Michigan is that there is a very Cornish part of the state, presumably with a mining connection, where you can buy pasties from vans. Is this true?
Anyway, kindly advise about Michigan festivals that have budgets to support UK guests.
Thanks
Greg
