Subject: Embarrassing RICK FIELDING :Radio Show Reminder!
From: katlaughing
Date: 24 May 99 - 01:11 AM

Rick told me I better not refresh the old thread about his Monday night radio program, which you can get over the Internet, because it would embarrass him, so.... I told him I would embarrass him, anyway, by starting a new one.

Besides, I've seen several new phoak on here, lately, who might not know about, Rick, so there****BIG Chesire Cat GRIN***

Anyway, to hear Rick's show, Acoustic Workshop, on CIUT at the University of Toronto, on Monday nights 7pm HIS time, just click here

Kat, You've confused me but that's easy to do. Is HIS time an acronym like GMT or were you refering to Rick?

The show is on at 9:00PM EDT.

I'll probably be hanging around the chat room while the show is on if anyone cares to join me.

kat, can you verify the actual time slot? Here's a cut/paste from the CIUT 89.5 University of Toronto URL you provided:

ACOUSTIC WORKSHOP - Mon., 9:00-10:00 pm Rick Fielding - Roots, or contemporary acoustic. It's still folk music. Six years of live performers in concert. The show that's not afraid to use the "F" word!

So do ya think it's 9:00 p.m. Toronto time? What time is that in Pacific Substandard time I wonder?

As y'all seem to be having a problem in your time conversions, allow me to step in and give you an easy conversion method.

Your first problem is that you are operating on the Grenwich MEAN Time standard which is often just as mean as it's name indicates. So let's swap to the more user friendly Icelandic Kinder Gentler Time standard to do our conversion tables. This also does away with the silly concept of the International Date Line (not the 900 one) which foists upon us the ludicrous idea that, though it is tomorrow there, it is yesterday here...which in point of all evidence is patently untrue, as it is today everywhere. Now we can move along to our formula at a more logical and simpler pace.

Take the current surface area of Iceland and subtract the linear distance between there and Pago Pago. Divide this by the square root of Joe Offer. (I use Joe here as this will help him in his conquests with the opposite sex. Since very few males have a square root, his demand should be on the rise...so to speak. I have no "personal" knowledge of Joe's current situation but I'm inclined to believe he may be in need of a little help as I overheard a recent female companion describe Joe's equipment as a "melting fudgcicle, flanked by two jelly beans.") In any case, take this total and multiply it by the number of clocks in your home, less the number of dead wristwatches in your upper right hand dresser drawer. Add the difference total (in minutes) of the aforementioned clocks and divide by the average versus the time on your current wristwatch. You can now differentiate under the equal sign to calculate the value of X, that being the time where you live. Don't forget to use the value of pi as a constant...and since the value of pie at diners between Toronto and Buffalo is $1.75 (US), use that (1.75) instead of the more traditional 3.14159 figure.

Putting it all together you can now readily see that when it is 3:30 P.M., May 24, 1999 in Otswego, it's 2:48 P.M.,October 18, 1893 in Waycross, Georgia. Of course it's always that time in Waycross so don't be confused.

I hope this has cleared things up for everyone and we'll all be tuning in to Rick's show tonight at 9 P.M. in Toronto. Except for Joe of course who is free to try out his square root or convert it to a blue, clicky thing...also unique, or so I'd tend to believe.

Actually, I did call Dr. Cojones but was unable to reach him as he was busy with his new study on sex perverts. When Cletus finally arrived back home he had this story all about how Cojones has discovered a "channel" of some sort between the sinuses and the genitals.

The most inner sanctum at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed houses 50 perverts (and Neil himself) where Cojones has been carrying out his experiments. The NYCFTTS guards are members of Crazed Tiple Bands who have failed in their mission and are waiting reassignment. Cletus says that Dr. Cojones uses Nose Flutes and not tiples to treat the perverts. It seems that the "channel" he discovered can aid in controlling the sex drive and specifically deviant activity, if the pervert simply continues to play "I Love a Parade" on Nose Flute, hence all inmates have Nose Flutes permanently affixed.

Cojones must have gotten a new batch of sexual deviants to work with since Cletus tells me there was a terrible accident while he was there. It seems as though some form of sinusitis epidemic struck and when their noses plugged up the excess pressure caused by the Nose Flute on the channel caused their gonads to explode. The details are too gruesome to go on, but it sent Cletus packin', that's for sure!

I'll try Cojones back later, but I think my meds are OK really.

Well, it wasn't the tiple brothers or any exploding body parts, but I did get called away to meet my sister, Pris, who is retiring from school teaching, missing her twin sister who just moved, and nervous about her new horizons; she invited me to meet her for dinner and we sat in the restaurant and talked our heads off for about 2.5 hours, so.....I am embarrassed (RICK, PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM THE ONE BEING EMBARRASSED!) to say that I missed the show; the first one since I found out about it and Rick asked me to call in for an early discourse on Beltane! I am sorry, Rick, please forgive me darlin'.

Catspaw: thanks for the reinforcement. You seem to be doing quite nicely.

Joe: you know we women don't believe anything another guy says about another guy's parts, doncha? So, when didja say you'd be in the Rocky Mtns., again?**BG**

Alright, that's enough humble pie for me. I WILL not miss it next week, Rick, I promise!

"Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans..." and I finally got to the computer at 2 minutes past Rick's show. I did, however get to hear some of the next show, "Mods and Rockers." I listen to some of that kind of stuff to keep me more in touch with what kids are thinking, and to (try) to stop me from getting too stogey, but... It's interesting how folk music is for all ages of people to enjoy, but some music seems to have a partial adjenda to exclude the parents. Like it's OUR music, not yours, and we'll make it as hard to listen to as it takes to make you back off from it. I've thought about this for a few years, how in the old days a whole family would listen to and dance to the (live) music together, and as time went on, the kids got their OWN music. Coming to a head with fifties rock 'n roll, and then on to acid rock, and further still to punk. Funny thing is, even though I'm not kid-aged anymore, I find that I can enjoy rap and whatever that angry atonal monotonal stuff was that followed Rick's show. Enough scope creep -- I'll catch his show next week, and I'll bet my kids'll enjoy it too!!

I live about 50 Klms east of Toronto and have been trying to hear Rick's show for months, but my home stereo does not get it, and I am rarely in my car when it is on. Last night saw me in my vehicle at 8:45 I tuned in only to catch the end of what seemed to be a good blues show, I will definately try to get that again. I was then able to hear about the first half of Ricks show and enjoyed it. The artist that they were refering to, Norm Hacking is definately worth checking out. I saw him at the Eaglewood folk festival a few years ago and was quite taken by both his material and performance. I have no idea how to get his CD's, but I'm sure Rick can be of help there. I will definately try to tune in again next week at 8:00 for the blues show followed by Rick's show.

Tony,

Thanks for the link. I have listened to CKLN's Saturday Folk show followed by their blues show for many years. I preferred theirs when Joe Louis hosted it and they played three hours of folk and then two hours of blues. The world music that they cram in between the two now is not to my liking most of the time. I also found that Joe covered more ground with his show, I find Kate Freisen tends to play a lot more modern stuff, which is fine, but I like to hear Woody etc.

Now I have another back to back blues/folk time slot to tune in to.

Steve

The song "Cats Everywhere" is by one the lesser known gems of songwriting, Toronto's Norm Hacking. Big Norm - he tips the scales at a svelte 400 lbs has been writing poignant, funny and emotional songs for 25 years, but due to being a single parent to his son Ben, has done very little touring. If you phone 416 694 3826 I'm sure you'll get the info you need on any of his recordings.

Large Mick! Funny you should ask about our hockey team. Actually we do have one and....oh, I guess I should mention...We're STILL in the playoffs! Or should I have said WE'RE still in the playoffs. The fact that our team is made up of 7 Russians, 4 Bosnian Serbs, 2 Finns, 11 Swedes, 1 American, and a Canadian skate sharpener, doesn't stop my Canuck pride from shining through. Before our next match with the hated Buffalo Sabres, the Leafs have hired Tonya Harding to give an exhibition of what she does best. It will take place in Dominek Hasick's goal crease!
I should also mention that on the radio show this Monday, as well as the "fair" Aussie Steve Barnes and a dose of Art Theime, I've got Paul Mills' to whip me off a semi-finished copy of "Catspaws Rag". It'll be on the new album in a more polished way, but I wanted to immortalise the "paw" before he got blown away by his possum ocarina.

Rick, Thanks for playin' something of mine. Is appreciated.

Stan's song about: "Every kid over the boards listen's for the sound,
The roar of the crowd is his ticket for finally leavin' this town..."

That's a fine song. Actually one of my favorites of his. Is Paul playing on that cut of the LP?

We're Black Hawk fans in this house---all the way back to the Eric Nesterenko--Bobby Hull--Mikita--Glen Hall--Tony-O Esposito days. Then Bo0bby H. took the first million dollar payday from Winnipeg and left Chicago. That effectively ended sport for sports sake in pro athletics. And I give it a half dozen years 'til college sports pay their athletes out in the open 'stead of under the table. Colleges get huge $$$$$$$ from what is actually slave loabor. No other minor league gets away with not paying their players a living wage like the colleges do. What a sweeheart deal the NBA & the NFL have; they don't need to fund any minor league like baseball & hockey do. Yeah, don't get me started...

Art...interesting that you would pick that Stan song as one of your favorites. It's called "Flying" and it was Stan's only hockey song. I don't even know if he was all that big a fan.

The song was inspired when Stan met a neighbor of mine, Ron Wallace, who, when a teenager, was well on his way to becoming an NHL player. Unfortunately he suffered an Orr-like knee injury which side-lined him forever. He went on to coach junior hockey (actually coached Gretsky and Coffey at on point) but eventually ended up selling hot tubs for a living.

For me the song deals with the same subject as that found in Stan's song, "Second Effort" - it's all about falling short of expectations (your's or others').

By the way, I'm not playing guitar on this cut. The electric lead is Bob Mann, a great player who later went on to play with James Taylor.

Cheers...

Paul

It's nine o'clock in Toronto, time to tuck the kiddies into bed and listen to ol' Rick bring us a good hour of fascinating folk. Click to play.

Thanks Joe. I had just remembered to use my bookmark onto Rick's show before clicking onto this thread. Good show Rick.

And, Mudcateer "Cat A Tonic" is in the studio, too!

What a great show tonight! I really enjoyed hearing catspaw's rag & hearing Rick sing "Jack of Diamonds." Good to hear a couple of songs by Art, too! Keep up the good work, Rick & Heather!

best to you both,

bbc

bbc - I was waiting to hear your voice on the radio!

Rick has a bunch of non-Mudcatters now wondering about "possum blowing." He never did explain that...

Yup, I was there at that fine radio show - Lots o' fun, Heather and I are part of a trio of lip cyncers - guess it travelled a little further. Always enjoy being with the Fieldings!

Sorry, Jeri. Heather caught me off-guard when she asked if I'd like to be on the air; the thought hadn't occurred to me. I didn't really think I had anything much to contribute to the show, even though Rick said he'd be nice. I just wanted to say hi & that I was enjoying the show. I *am* wondering what Rick's local listening audience thinks about the Mudcat references? I was rolling on the floor, laughing (as I was catching up on my email), but I would think some of them may be somewhat confused. Blowing 'possums, indeed!

Looking forward to next week,

bbc

I think we could end up with a bunch of folkies from Toronto here - and welcome to 'em.

As far as possum blowing, he might having to explain that next week. Of course, they might all be coming in here and peeking at the possum posts.

As far as not appearing on air, I understand. I was in the chat room, and we were hoping you'd go for it, but I probably would have opted out myself.

Wouldn't it be cool if Rick had a computer in th studio and was logged into the chat room while he was on the air? He could read our comments about the show and...nah, maybe not.
