Many MANY moons ago, I was invited to an end-of-year social 'do' by a fellow teacher who went through college with me. It was (I recall - hopefully correctly) somewhere in Preston/Heidelberg/Bundoora (Melbourne) and the entertainment was provided by a Bush Band with the unlikely name of "Paradiddle".

These guys were brilliant and were the inspiration for me to explore the whole Australian Traditional/Bush/folk music genre. Up until then about all I was familiar with was Click Go the Shears, The Drovers Dream, The Old Bark Hut and bloody 'Waltzing Matilda'.

Does anyone know what became of them - or whether thewy 'evolved' into a new format - - - just curious.

I'd never heard of them (sorry! but I am a Sydneysider) but after a bit of research (once a librarian, always a librarian) it looks like they stayed the same & evolved. They seem to be part of the schools circuit (lucky them) & 2 of them run a publishing company.

Found 8 records for Paradiddle Band on Music Australia

they appeared at Port Fairy in 1981

Primary School resources from Paradiddle band (bush & other dances) - Mark Leehy and Kevin O'Mara are Directors of this company

Judy Turner's reminiscences of Paradiddle

Muttley, if you don't get enough traditional Australian music, you could head north for an October long weekend of Bush Traditions at the Old Goulburn Brewery, Bradley Grange

Paradiddle were around Melbourne at the same time (and often in the same places) as Flying Pieman but concentrated more on the schools' performances, but I've not heard anything of them since I went to the Top End for a year in the mid 80s and I moved to New England after that.

Looks like Sandra's got the goods on them though.

Cheers, Rowan

Sorry it's taken so long to reply - chalk another win up to 'short-term memory loss' - I forgot I'd asked until I thought abouyt asking again (for the first time today) when I suddenly had a burst of "didn't you already do that?"

A quick check on the 14-day search and there it was!

Thanks for the feedback guys - most appreciated.

As for Goulburn, Sandra - I'd love to, but my wife would probably stab me in the eye (or preferably the voice-box) for suggesting it - she's NOT a great lover of bush music, I'm afraid. And unfortunately I am incapable of driving that far alone.

Melbourne fiddler Harry Gardner takes the train to Goulburn, if your family is in to taking separate holidays. Camping will be available on the site this year, & nearest motel is a 20 min (slow) walk from the site, just opposite the station.

Some pics of 2006 & 2007 Bush Traditions Festivals here

Thanks heaps Sandy - I'll have to see what I can arrange. Never thought of training it! Probably because the only two long-trip train rides I HAVE taken (TGV from Toulouse to Paris and then the Eurostar from Paris to London) both left me with a SEVERE case of the 'running Jimmy Brits'.

Again, thanks

http://www.alpineheritagemotel.com.au/ - other stuff happens in Goulburn that weekend, so if you are thinking of motelling you would need to book beforehand.

We could have a Mudcat get together as it would be easy - Bob Bolton is the only other Mudcatter attending that I'm aware of.
