Subject: Sultana on History Channel ~~ today!

Even as I am typing this, The History Channel is broadcasting Sultana: The Mississippi's Titanic. It will be repeated at 11PM and 3AM Central time, so I intend to watch (and tape) the next one since I have already missed the beginning.

This is all they have on their site: In April 1865, 2,400 people bound for Memphis boarded the steamship "Sultana" which normally carried 240 passengers. Many were Union survivors of the Confederacy's infamous Andersonville prison. When the overtaxed boiler blew, over 1,800 died in the Mississippi's muddy waters in a tragedy that claimed more lives than the Titanic. [TV G]

I watched the show, just by accident (surfing around), and what an amazing story! And amazing that I had never heard of it before. Apparently, right after the Civil War, it was "just another" huge amount of casualties. Loretta S

I found nothing on the song, but a summary of the disaster can be found here ~~ http://www.readysnacks.mcmail.com/alice.htm I had never heard of it before. (but then, there are a lot of things I have never heard of before) As a result of a collision with another boat, the paddle steamer Princess Anne went down in the Thames on 3 Sep 1878 with the loss of over 600 lives. As mentioned at the bottom of the page, a 1965 book by Gavin Thurston details the incident. I located a couple of used copies at Barnes and Noble in the $15-$20 range.

Thanx Dale

My previous searches had found nothing. Funny that.
