I have heard both of thee instruments on Jackson Browne and Lowell George recordings yet i have never had the pleasure of seeing someone play one of these. What do each of these look like? Are there Artists who have entire Cd's of either? Would anyone know of someone in Canada who plays either?

Well, do you have any Mariachi bands in Canada? Maybe a good excuse to go to Gudalajara??

To read more about the mariachi instruments, go click

The vihuela, guitarron, and others are discussed at the above link.

Photos of front, back, and side of vihuela are here.

quote:
"The vihuela gets its' name from the Spanish vihuela of the Renaissance time although the two are very different. The vihuela design includes a belly for added resonance and has five single courses of strings. The mariachis of Cocula and Ameca used the vihuela instead of the Guitarra De Golpe during the 1800's. The vihuela has a tuning of a-d'-g'-b-e. and this instrument gives the mariachi ensemble its' unique sound since no other genre of music uses the vihuela. The role of the vihuela is also as a rhythm and chordal accompaniment. In recent recordings, arrangers have made more clever use of the vihuela's capabilities."

Wayne, I designed a more manageable Guitarron about 5 years ago and had Glen Reid build it for me. They're great for acoustic jam sessions and sound almost as loud as a string bass. Big plus is they'll fit in the trunk of your car!

Thanks Alice after following the link and seeing the photo i remember the guitarron in many a photo. I have still not scene one played in person though. All these celtic bands up here never seem to use them or perhaps in Mexico they just make reaaaaaally big acoustics.

Thanks Wayne

Only if he's had more than one as the other was undoubtedly stolen. Big RiB...make a note, we don't want to lose track.

If Rick is refering to the bass that Glenn built you can see one at the Northern Journey Online site as it is used in their 'logo'.
