I imagine one of those Victorian please-daddy-come-away-from-the-tavern tearjerkers about this:

Children concerned by parents' web habits

Oh, daddy, please daddy, log off for me now
I hear the sad lowing of our little cow
Her udder is bursting and I'm much too small
So daddy, please daddy, stop playing Redwall!

One keen-edged cartoon I saw showed a young woman saying, "So long, Daddy. I'm off to college."
With his eyes on the computer screen, he's holding up two fingers: "Finished kindergarden already? Just two more emails, Punkin, and I'll be right with you."

I'm a binge 'net junkie.

Web of Deceit.

Dad if you don't tuck me in,
I'll never get to sleep.
Please leave your comp for just a mo,
Or Mum and I will weep.
You surf the web both morn and night,
Seeking pretty girls.
You never run your hand these days,
Through mummys lovely curls.
Please leave your porn site daddy dear,
Come tuck me in my bed.
Your puter has possessed you,
You've gone quite off your head.
Please come and tuck me in dad,
Our stories we can share.
And I promise I won't tell mum,
Bout your internet 'affair'

Of course, if it were grandparents....

Everybody's gone surfin,
Surfin O A P!

Sorry... it's a really slow day at work today and I've been here 5 hours already.

I'm not a song writer. I just want to say that the article from Sweden really saddened me. Some people have found another addiction, and another way to let their children down.

There are web sites for recovering weboholics.

Isn't that like having AA meetings with an open bar?

Maybe not quite... give-away matchbooks with quit-smoking-program ads on them prove an effective way to reach people when they're ready to change their behaviour.

Of course there is scope for a song here, but I wonder whether there really is an issue worth pursuing. There are a reported 1,895 cases of children, who say they are concerned about their parents' behaviour on the internet. Sweden has a population of around 7 million. To me that suggests that there are quite a lot of Swedish children, who are not concerned about their parents' behaviour on the internet.

BLOG OF THE DAY
(Parody lyrics by Maureen Parrott, with apologies to Otis Redding & Steve Cropper, composers of Dock of the Bay)

Sittin' and playin' with the mouse
I never get out of this house
Tappin' keys when night comes on
And still tappin' in the light of dawn

(Chorus:)
Sittin' in front of a screen
Glowin' white, red & green
Watchin' the patterns change
Wastin' time...

I left my kids in daycare
Dial-up, check an email or two...
They tried to call to see when I'd get there
My line's busy, they couldn't get through
(Cho.)

(Interlude)
Looks like there's no new mail
But if I keep sittin' a spell
Chat, & check my auctions, then
Oh, I guess I'll check mail again

Sittin' hunched over the keys
Crampy shoulders, sore back, & stiff knees
Just a few more links to explore
I'll read 'em, then follow some more
(Cho.)

MP

Holy self-fulfilling prophecies, Batman! You were right, Artful Codger. I spent far too much time trying to find the right protocol for posting, which may leave me a cranky and impatient mom tomorrow. Sigh. Maybe I'll make it a computer-free weekend.
