Subject: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: Schantieman Date: 27 Jun 08 - 07:06 AM Jack Coutts and Bernie Davis have worked hard to put together a shanty festival as part of the Liverpool 08 Capital of Culture year. There's an article about it on the Liverpool Daily Post website at http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-life-features/capital-of-culture/2008/06/24/sea-shanties-songs-to-help-you-work-rest-and-play-64375-21142714/article (too long for a clicky), and a short interview with Bernie too. Sadly I can't take part as I'll be afloat on the south coast at the time, but anyone within reach is encouraged to go. Liverpool city centre (look out for the building site), 18 - 21 July, which coincides with the start of the first leg of the Tall Ships Race from Liverpool as well. The Round the World Clipper Race is also finishing here next weekend: Sat 5th July. Enjoy :-) Steve |

Subject: RE: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: GUEST,Dave MacKenzie Date: 27 Jun 08 - 07:29 PM If you want the home site, it's at www.shaties08.co.uk. I've heard the French and Italian groups before, and can recommend them. Don't know anything about the Poles, though I've asked my local POlska Sklep to have a look at their website and tell me what it says. Also great pint (or six) in the Baltic Fleet. |

Subject: RE: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: GUEST,Dave MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 08 - 07:29 PM Sorry bout the typo - most of Western Europe's tucked up in bed by now. My Polish friends tell me that the Polish group are a young band, do their own material, but also traditional Polish sea songs, so presumably not translations of "Fareweel to Tarwathie" and "The Leaving of Liverpool". Subject: RE: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: 8_Pints Date: 13 Jul 08 - 06:43 PM Sue & I shall be on the STS Lord Nelson [Jubilee Sailing Trust] during her maintenance period 14-17th July, and thereafter at Saddleworth FF for the weekend. We hope we can find some singing whilst we are at Wellington Dock, but any guidance would be most welcome. Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: GUEST,Dave MacKenzie Date: 13 Jul 08 - 07:01 PM Looks like the first event is the session hosted by Hughie Jones on Friday night in the Baltic Fleet. It's where you can usually find a programme (and sample some of the beers from the micro-brewery in the subterranean tunnels). The last time the festival was run, I think there were formal concerts on the Wirral on the Thursday night, but I haven't seen any mention of anything earlier than Friday this year. Good luck in finding something - possibly some of the Tall Ships' crews might be doing something. |
Subject: RE: Shanties in Liverpool 08 From: GUEST,Dave MacKenzie Date: 09 Aug 08 - 06:29 PM Managed to get to some of the events. The session (and beer) at the Baltic Fleet on Friday was good as ever though I spent most of my time outside listening to Les Souilles de Fond de Cale who started their own session and were in no hurry to stop. The main festival suffered from the venues being to far apart, and crowd control being very much in evidence, but I did manage to catch most of Qftry's set. Yes folks, it's true - there are Polish words without vowels, though I think they pronounced it something like coof-tree. I'd definitely give them another listen, though because of the logistics of Wellington Dock, I wasn't able to get my hands on one of the CDs they said they had with them, and I haven't seen it on any of usual internet sources yet. I gave up after that, and looked at the ships. I haven't managed to find out anything about future years yet, but hopefully we'll be back to the old format so that I can to hear everybody I want to. |
