Vaughn-Willians set the hymn "O God of earth and altar" to a traditional English melody which he named King's Lynn. I've recognised the tune for some time but I've not been able to remember the folk song that that goes with the tune.
Recently though I found "Young Henry the Poacher" in Roy Palmer's "Folk Songs Collected by RVW" uses the same tune, but I'm sure I've heard a different song sung to this tune.
Does anyone know of a different song that uses the same tune?

According to the "Companion to Rejoice and Sing":

"This robust melody has served two folk-songs, 'Van Dieman's Land' and 'Young Henry the Poacher'. It was collected by Vaughan Williams at East Horndon, Essex on 23 April 1904 and at King's Lynn, Norfolk, on 9 Jan. 1905. He arranged it for 'O God of earth and altar' in eh 1906, and the partnership has become well established.

The tune should not be hurried. Erik Routley remarked that the final four lines of the hymn 'must be a real blaze of colour'."

Thanks for the information Dave, and now you mention it the tune is very similar. But it's still not the one I was thinking of.

'Oh God of earth and altar' was one of my favourite hymns at school, which shows how old I am. I was recently listening to a song and recognised the tune, it being Kings Lynn. I don't think it was either of those mentioned, but I'll try rewind on my life and see if I can find it.

Thanks Doc

I've been rewinding for some time - so now I'm almost wound up, or is it wound down?
