As I remember it--

School days, school days
Dear old golden rules days
Readin' and Writin' and 'Rithmatic
Taught to the tune of the hick'ry stick.
You were the gal in Calico
I was your bashful, barefoot beau.
I wrote on you slate 'I love you so'
When we were a couple of kids.

Though most of us just learned the Chorus, here are the verses as well. From the piece of sheet music dated 1941...

SCHOOL DAYS
(When We Were A Couple Of Kids)
Lyrics by Will D. Cobb Music by Gus Edwards
original copyright 1906

Nothing to do, Nellie Darling?
Nothing to do, you say?
Let's take a trip on memory's ship,
Back to the bygone days.
Sail to the old village school house,
Anchor outside the school door,
Look in and see, there's you and there's me,
A couple of kids once more.

CHORUS
School days, school days,
Dear old golden rule days.
Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic
Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick.
You were my queen in calico,
I was your bashful, barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, "I love you, Joe"
When we were a couple of kids.

'Member the hill, Nellie Darling,
And the oak tree that grew on its brow?
They've built forty stories upon that old hill
And the oak's an old chestnut now.
'Member the meadows so green, dear,
So fragrant with clover and maize?
Into new city lots and preferred bus'ness plots,
They've cut them up since those days.
(CHORUS)

Go to the Levy Sheet Music Site, enter School Days, it will call up the appropriate sheet music. Nine songs will be listed, you want the one by Cobb and Yellen, 1907.

Of course, I meant Cobb and Edwards! It's just that Cobb and Yellen collaborated on so many songs, that I just automatically typed that without thinking.

Joe, Just call me "Quick Type Mary"! I saw the post and flew to get my piece of sheet music...carefully slipped it out of the protective plastic envelope and started typing! I said to myself "I've got this one!" LOL

Now I am going to go to that link you included (Thanks for including that!)...it sounds as though you've given the homepage, which is great! I was curious about the site after seeing the music for Let Me Call You Sweetheart from another thread a few days back...

I think I will share that this song has very special meaning to me...it was the last thing my Grandfather and I talked about, with him saying the words of the song, days before he died...To think he was about 7 or 8 when the song came out! WOW!
