Getaway 2008 Program Planning

Subject: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Nancy King Date: 08 Jul 08 - 05:33 PM Well, folks, it's time to get down to the business of planning the program for the 2008 Folklore Society of Greater Washington Getaway! This year's Getaway will be October 3-6, at the West River Conference Center on the Chesapeake Bay, and you're all welcome to join the fun! If you'd like more information about the Getaway, check the description on the FSGW site (fsgw.org). Right now this info refers to last year's event, but this year will be similar, and updated info will be there before too long. Or, you can put "Getaway" into the filter box at the top of the Mudcat page, set the age for a year or two, and you'll get more information than you could possibly want. One of the nifty things about the Getaway is that we really try to tailor each year's program to the interests and talents of those who will be attending. But until we know who's coming and what they want to do, it's hard to do that. The Program Committee -- Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), Lorraine van Buren (Mudcatter "Lorraine"), and I – have been working on a fine lineup of invited guests. So far we have confirmed The Beans, Wally Macnow and Berta Scott-Macnow, and Elizabeth LaPrelle, and we're working on getting rides for a few others. Now we're starting to put together lists of possible workshops, and we're ready for your input! So, if you plan to come, please let us know that, and tell us what you would like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops from previous years you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although we can't promise that every one of them will end up on the final list, we can assure you that all will be given due consideration. You can post to this thread with your ideas, or PM any of us. It would be a big help, by the way, if this thread could be reserved for program issues – other Getaway topics can be posted to this thread, or maybe you could start a new one. The songwriters showcase was intended so that songwriters could introduce the how why of a song of theirs and then present it. It has been very enjoyavble the last few years. |

Disguises-Anything from "The Half Hitch" to "Claudy Banks" to "Queen Elenor's Confession" to "Sovay" to "The Handome Cabin Boy" Disguise is the limit! "Diseases"-acne to pox to the common cold, from "slow condumption killing you by degrees' to "The Boogie Disease" (the doctor says you might get better, but you won't get well!, or even the Heebie Jeebies! There are enough existing key songs to fill up a whole workshop already by themselves- "Locks And Bolts", Key To The Highway", "The Keyhole In The Door" or even "Unchained Melody", if anybody's at home on THAT range and actually can hit all those notes. |

Lots of us know a few songs, but if we're going to do it, we ought to have a bit of the lore thrown in as well. Anybody want to volunteer for that one? We're getting some interesting ideas here -- keep 'em coming! By the way, I should mention that we have a very limited number of slots available for mini-concerts, as we want to keep most of the time available for the participatory workshops that make the Getaway the inclusive event it is. And of course all of our special invited guests are scheduled for minis -- it's just about the only perk they get. So don't be too disappointed if you're not tapped for a mini -- you're in good company! More ideas? Nancy |

Fox Smith workshop, and that includes songs with choruses, not just a lecture. The working Anthology of her poems that Jim Saville and I have pulled together now includes 626 poems. Anyone else who can lead one of her songs would be more than welcome to do that. I have 20 or so to select from that I've either worked up or others have nailed in terms of fitting her poems to a tune. There are also a number of old sailor poets that I've also been working with: Burt Franklin Jenness, Bill Adams, Harry Kemp and John Masefield. IF I do a Whistle workshop , I try to pass on tips to experienced players to help them get better , while trying to get beginners to have some idea of the potential of the instrument . My thanks also to Carly and Lorraine. Some suggestions on workshops: Songs from across the pond and back again -- years ago Carly led such a workshop at the WFF. It was fun to hear the songs that were adopted from the British Isles and those that made their way back again -- in different form. Carly and Elizabeth would be great hosts for this work shop. Something like songs of the U.S. civil war era (personal reflections of the time) -- with Judy Cook as host. If rumors are true and Dwaine Thorp (sp)is joining us this year, a blues workshop would be great. I'm always a complete sucker for a do woop workshop. If Ken Schatz is joining us this year he would be a natural to host this work shop with Amos. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Nancy King Date: 10 Jul 08 - 01:00 PM Well, Marion, often Getaway workshops are basically song-circles-on-a-theme, but we usually try to make them a bit more than that. We try to choose leaders who have significant repertoires in the chosen topic, and who know enough to provide some background and history as well. Most folks are there for the singing, not for a lecture, but a good leader knows when to inject a few fascinating tidbits of lore in such a way as to enhance the session without bringing down the momentum. And leaders are always happy to discuss the fine points of a topic at any time during the weekend. That's one of the things that's great about the Getaway -- it's a wonderful opportunity for networking with people of similar interests. Some workshops, including many of those on instrumental techniques, really are intended as teaching sessions, but we always encourage participation. Hope that answers your question! Nancy |

It was a challenge to give everyone an opportunity to lead a song. In connection with the Anthology project I'm coordinating with Jim Saville of the UK, I've determined that there are well over 30 recordings that include songs based on her poems, most produced since 1991. There certainly was strong interest by those who attended the recent workshop I coordinated at the Mystic Sea Music Festival with Danny & Joyce McLeod and Bob Zentz. You might want to tell the uninformed what kind of roots-for-the- home-team that the always-worthy workshop actually consists of. |

I have lots of songs I can lead and lots of background on her life but that's not my favorite kind of workshop. I'd much rather provide bits of background in the context of a particular poem. And I'll certainly prepare a handout. I know Bat Goddess leads "Race of Long Ago." Are there others? There is a discography of recorded C. Fox Smith poems I've prepared which is available on the C. We have often had old timey workshops that were, in essence, jam sessions - but Old Time Songs could also include unaccompanied ballads, solo pieces and others, as well as the stringband music that's so much fun to jam on. Also historical songs - that's always fun. And since we're in October, I like the ghoulies and ghosties idea. I'd say train songs, but something tells me that'll be pretty well covered in a Utah Phillips workshop. (Last night I was playing "Casey Jones" - the "good old rounder but he's dead and gone" version - and my 14 month old son kept going "Choo! Choo!" every time the word "train" came up.) Dan |

Looks like it will be a great Getaway! Not that we've ever had a bad one... I do need to point out that we are still in the planning stages, program-wise. We've got lots of good ideas, and now we're in the process of winnowing down the list and figuring out who should lead what. It's more complicated than it seems on the surface -- we need to consider who will be there, and their preferences, as well as time constraints and "balance" (in regard to content AND people) in the program. At this point, VERY few things are definite. Please keep in mind that the Getaway is not just a Mudcat gathering. It is -- and has been for well over 40 years now -- the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's annual weekend. There are many FSGW folks who come regularly and participate actively, who are not on Mudcat. We need to be in touch with them, too. So, the three of us on the Program Committee (me, Carly, and Lorraine) have been contacting a lot of people by phone, PM, and email to find out if they're coming this year and what they'd like to do, and we haven't heard back yet from quite a few of them. (Not to mention the fact that we're having a little trouble with communication among ourselves...) So the potential for confusion is pretty high. Please don't assume that everything that's been suggested will actually end up on the schedule! We'll try to fit in as much as we can, taking into consideration the ideas mentioned in this thread, our own -- er -- creations, and ideas from non-Mudcatters. I just keep plugging for un-plugging in a few venues where 'trad' is the major historical interest. There are lots & lots of places for amplified stuff, but SO few where we can be relatively free of it. I am not sure why 'louder' 'faster' and 'heavier' seem to be required to avoid boredom for some...but I have heard 'intensity' produced just fine with acoustic blues. It's hard walking the line between sounding like I'm trying to mess with folks innocent fun and just wanting to avoid heading down a path where we change too much. I'll figger out how to hide if it gets overwhelming..... ☺ |

Of course, he played sax as well. He recorded on his own (one was called "A Tribute To Courage") and appeared on recordings with the likes of Sonny Rollins. There were those in the jazz community who readily dismissed him, but he was out there on the circuit for quite a few years. There was also a Canadian band back in the 1980s I heard on a live radio show (Mountain Stage, maybe?) called Rare Air consisting of a couple of bagpipes, a bombarde and percussion. They played a World Music stew that included the likes of Thelonious Monk among its ingrediants and I believe they recorded for Flying Fish Records. So, yes, it's been not only tried, but documented on recordings and attempted to be sold. |

FSGW Getaway is primarily a folk getaway weekend. Sure we can play a bit, but we should not change it by small degrees every year until the original intent is lost. This event far predates the Mudcat. We have been, for the most part, a positive influence on it. But we must remember that we are guests of the FSGW, and many of those folks set the standard for years. Having said that, a small bass amp surely would not hurt to give a bass line to the blues. But electic guitars should not be there, and anyone bringing a strat or Les Paul, and a large amp, would be stepping over the line, IMO. The Blues, played appropriately for a FSGW Getaway, should be country blues, or acoustic blues, not amplified stuff. There are venues for that, but this isn't one. And the FSGW is a gathering, a retreat, a series of workshops, not a concert venue, with the sole exception of the mini concerts. It is a sharing place, not a starring place. I look forward to the blues WORKSHOP, and an acoustic blues mini concert. I have seen these guys and they are great. Let's just keep it to the spirit of a Getaway. All the best, Mick |

In general the final decisions about workshops and leaders can't be made for weeks yet. At this point the committee don't know who is coming; there are Invited Guests who can't give a final answer; and we don't know which non-Mudcat "regulars" will be coming. All of those people need to be considered in setting up the program. The Program Committee has a huge jigsaw puzzle to assemble. It takes a LOT of meetings, e-mails and phone calls. (Taking so many things into consideration has a lot to do with the outstanding quality of the program year after year.) Plus, some of these inconsiderate, lazy Committee people are going to music weeks and taking other vacations right now ;-D so they don't have the "face time" needed to discuss and decide. (I'm just jealous because I'm not taking any vacation this year.) Since we first invited Mudcatters to the Getaway we have finished the program much earlier than previously, and published it on line. [I say "we," but I am just a kibitzer this year.] But "much earlier" means, say, two weeks before the Getaway instead of the Wednesday before. What most of us do in fact is take a look at what has been suggested, think of a few things we'd like to contribute, and just polish up some of our favorites in the expectation that during the weekend we'll get -- or make -- a chance to sing some of 'em. That's especially true for potential workshop leaders. They are leaders because they have a lot of love and appreciation for their subject and have a large repertoire. Most have far too many songs they'd like to do and things they'd like to say. My best advice is, if you're hoping to lead something, think a bit about what you'd like to do or say but remember most of the time is spent letting the participants participate. The workshop is likely to take on a life of its own and go in its own direction once it takes off anyway. |

She would like to lead "Home, Boys, Home," a World War 1 poem which Smith titled "Homeward" but since has passed into the folk song world by a different title. It's capped at about 2 dozen acts each night, so that people can go make music at a reasonable hour. There are other weekends (NOT the Getaway) I've been to where this sort of sign-up format concert regularly goes until 1 or 2 in the morning, at which point, it's to late to jam or do anything but hit the sack. --Charlie Baum |

I'm shy about asking people to join me, since it feels I'm putting them on the spot and if a bunch of people say no, it's hard not to feel rejected even though they may have very legitimate reasons for passing (such as they want to do their own solo or other band thing and people are supposed to perform only once). I don't mean to make it sound like that big a deal, but sometimes there are several people just itching to do a duo or trio but not happening to connect with each other. Kind of like being at a party where there's a band and not knowing who wants dance partners and who doesn't. One idea: Will there be any sort of message board, where people can post notes like "looking for carpool home" or "looking for band members for concert?" Genie |

Part of the wonder is that if you're arriving on Friday by the Saturday evening concert you've had plenty of time to sample a very large percentage of the crowd & them you, so it's pretty easy to find folks whose tastes run alike. Then you've always the option of just announcing that you're looking for someone to partner up with. You'd better be careful how you word that though, you could end up with more than you bargined or asked for, which is not to say that's a bad thing. I don't know about message boards but you could write that in beside you name on the sign up sheet ("Looking for partner in duo or trio, that way if no one takes you up you won't know whose's rejected you. You again better explain yourself, dou's & trio's sound very interesting. See you there & introduce yourself, there's no reason to feel shy there, you're already among friends, you just haven't met them yet. There's an option, I think when you sign up members of the FSGW get little buttons/pins that show the FSGW along with their name & Mudcatters get the same with their sign in name or their real name, so you'll be known as Genie if you'd like with some kind of mudcatter thingy. Once again, Dean has incorporated a nifty feature that allows you to see the descriptive blurb for each event by placing your cursor over the event. I must point out that this schedule is still SUBJECT TO CHANGE, though it would be WAY better if we didn't have to make any changes (every time we change something, it messes up other things, creating a dreadful can of worms). If you are a workshop leader and we have you in two places at once, let us know and we'll change it. If you simply want to be in two places at once, well, join the club. You could still get to 45 minutes of the Utah workshop. Last year I had a workshop at the same time as Gordon Bok's mini, and only one person showed up. (And I'm still grateful you came, Mom!) I thought the "All About Instruments" workshop could use a little explanation, for those who haven't figured out how to get the workshop descriptions on the schedule. (Move your cursor over the title.) The official description is: "Bring instruments, questions and knowledge for a show-and-tell about many kinds of folk instruments." This will be a chance to show off your cool or weird instrument, to ask questions of other instrumentalists about playing and proper care and maintenance (ie, How do you play basic autoharp melodies? How do I know when it's time for a neck reset on my guitar? What are my cheaper alternatives? What difference does the tension on my banjo head make? What should I look for when buying a concertina?) and to generally pool our knowledge about these tools of our trade. And, of course, we'll play and hear tunes. What the workshop turns out to be will largely depend on who shows up and what the needs are. So I hope some of you can bring some of your more unusual or interesting instruments for the "show-and-tell" portion. Dan |

Some folks have already contacted me and plan to lead singing versions of her poems. As workshop coordinator I'd love to hear from more people in advance via PM if they'd also like to lead a song. Here are some of the poems people have expressed interest in leading: Poor Old Ship Tow Rope Girls Limehouse Reach Sea Dreams (lovely but very long!) The Eternal Feminine Homeward (aka Hampshire Lads) There should also be ample opportunity for someone to lead a song if they just show up, or join in the chorus or just listen. I've prepared a 6-page handout and will lead 3 or so songs myself that illustrate C. Fox Smith's range of interest in the Great Age of Sail. So many great workshops, only one body!
