From: SINSULL

Recently I came across the title of a song written by Larry - Yvette's Song. I would like to contact him for the lyrics. He was once an active member of Mudcat. Resides in NYC and perfomed there frequently. A favorite memory - standing on a street corner in NYC one night while Larry played the small pipes and we shared a few songs. Suffet was there and so was smallpiper, I think. A long time ago.
Is anyone in contact with him?
Mary

I believe Yvette's Song might have been the Otway contribuition to the Mudcat CDs, SINS. I am sure I have a recording of it somewhere, or at least did. I'll see if I can find the lyrics for you.

I have all the CDs Amos. I will check tonight. Still would like to hear from him. He and Genie are wonderful people. The upcoming Getaway remnded me of him - Larry in Quaker plain with all those weirdly dressed ladies (Judy Cook - the bumblebee; Linda Goodman, the tooth fairy) doing a buck 'n wing with a flying kick.

Sinsull - I'm acquainted with Larry from a Manhattan Irish session I go to. Neither he nor I go every week, so I run into him only occasionally there. But I did see him at some point this spring, and he was piping away. Probably just too busy with his various projects to post a lot on Mudcat.

Dear dear dear dear dearest friends...

Things have been very hard of late, some things I can't tell you all yet. However, these kind words do mean so much to me. Yes, I did have some trouble in Boston, I had not seen that artical... it does not really tell the story well. And, after all these years, the same spector rose its ugly head only a few years ago, when I built a few boats in New London, Joyce is still going strong, and unrepentant.

The quotes were more accurate in the Boston Herald "you can bring your black boats to Boston but leave you N*****s in New York..."

Well, I am spending most of every days taking care of my mother who has Altzheimers, and taking care of her business. A family member has made this very difficult. Last week my blood pressure was 197 over 124. Taking care of mum is a joy, being attacked at every turn is a nightmare.

I sing, these days, only while watering the garden or sweeping the sidewalk. But, I think dearly of all of you here, and miss you greatly.

Genie is alright, though these times are hard on her. She fell and was pinned at the upper thigh between a subway train and the platform last week. I got one of those terrifying calls in the middle of the night, 1:30 am, she was being taken to hospital. I spent the night in the hospital with her, scrapes and bad swelling. At seven AM she was releaced, limped to my home to help take care of mum, and two days latter this family member called her a liar. I dispair at humanity, if family treats each like this, what hope is there for an end to war and all the other failures of human spirit.

Not sure what the future holds, these days, or if there will even be one.

But, I love you all, and miss you.

Lorcan
PS
Yvette's Song
When I was young, my people lived, along the Moise river's flow
Summer when the Salmon ran, its fishing we would go
And, Oh the way the Salmon ran.

Then came the fall, and with it the snow, and north and west
to hunt we'd go, Following the Carabou
and Oh how the Carabou ran

Then one day, the Candaians came, took away the children
in a big seaplane. Told us we were for Boarding school
and oh how the chilren ran

Kai Kai, I said to the teacher there, she slapped my face
and pulled my hair, schooled me in the white world ways
and oh how the old ways ran

When I was 18, I went to Quebec, to find a job and a big
pay check, There I found I was "Indian",
and oh oportunity ran

For an "Indian" there were no jobs at all, but there were drugs
and there was alchohol, Soon I found I was adrift
like a feather on the Moise's flow

But the Bear spirit came to me, and spoke of my grandmother
and the Moise, back I went to my Grandmother's door
and oh how my cares then ran

There I remembered I was Innu again, and not a "Montanise"
and not your "Indian" and oh how good the Salom was
and oh how the white ways ran

But, now we are faced with mines and with dams,
which polute our rivers and destroy the land
Now there is no place to run
so watch how the Innu stand.

With thanks to my sister, Yvette Michelle, and to the Mistashipu Innuat, who saw me through a difficult time, when they faced worse.

Thanks, Lorcan, good to see you again.
I have been thinking of you a good deal of late, for a couple of reasons including a new waterfront festival in Connecticut, also some of the predictable problems with a pub owner we both know. But I am sorry to hear about your mother and your family difficulties. Please give my best to Genie as well.

Ach, Lorcan:

All I can think of is the tale of another old Quaker, who went every day to the same newspaper stand for his daily pepr; every day he thanked the newsie politely, and every day the newsie gave him a discourteous, rude answer. A friend of his asked him once why he continued to treat this ruffian, who was so rude to him every day, with politeness and kindness; and his answer was, "Why should I let him define how I choose to act?"

I am sorry for your woes; I wish you courage, calm, forgiveness given and taken, and great strength to remember the best of who you really are despite temptations to forget.

Warmest regards,

A

May you and Genie both enjoy a swift return to good health and may your mother find comfort in your loving care. I give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. Lorcan, last time I remember seeing something from you here was after a gas line explosion in midtown Manhattan last year and you had some incredible photos up at Flickr. I see someone posted a link, I'll have to follow it.

I think someone said he is a "traveller," but it was my understanding that he represented Travellers (gypsies), wasn't one of that group. Is this correct?

As to family, it has been my experience that the best family is the one you put together for yourself, whether related by blood or not. I totally understand and sympathize about the (verbal?) assaults by a family member. Been there, done that, it is no fun, especially when you're giving up so much of your life to care for the needs of someone else, only to be abused or even accused of nefarious activity.

Good luck and stay well,

SRS

Oh, friends:

You kind words are a real balm... These should be the happiest days of my life. Mom is spending her days remembering her life richly, though she does have trouble remembering what she did ten minutes ago. We sit in front of the theater my father built, on a bench, and neighbors come up and thank her for fond memories of nights at the theater when Dad ran it. We were in the middle of plans to expand the families earnings considerably, in order that Mom would be able to get the best care humanly possible in the home she loves. It all still might be.

I don't understand people bent on revenge. I am not even sure what I have done to this person. In the angery emails I recieve back to loveingly put suggestions at resolution, even complete surrender of my financial future, I see such a weight of anger. Amos, I love your story, it is so in keeping with Quaker basic thought. And it is appropriate here. If only it was only a news vendor, and not someone with such power linked to malicious intent.

Ah, Celticaddict, I am not surprised. Wishing you and yours the best, and light to our mutual friend with the pub. Ah, Katlaughing, so nice to have thee dearly among my Frith, and Ebbie, I do miss thee, and thy wonderful stories. Spaw, I feel like Dorthy, saying good bye at the end of Wizard of Oz - and you Spaw, I think I miss you most of all ... where would we be, without the power of beans! Janie, thank'ee so for the kind words, SRS, right you are... A dear and lamented late friend, a prince of the road, Jack "The Barron" Gorman used begin letters by calling me a fellow road prince, but, I only traveled with my dear sisters and brothers, and was not a Traveller. That honnor is too often claimed by those who have not been ground down enough by the country folk to have earned that name of honnor. I was once barred from a famous pub in Listowl by a famous writer, who famously hated Travellers, and I am forever grateful to him for that. I was also barred from a pub in New London by another less famous fellow who hated people of my mother's ethnicity - I found that much less of an honnor. Dave, it is so nice of you to say you are still listening to my tape. I played at the Lower East Side Festival a few months back, with a very tallented young person named Taylor Giacoma ( mynameishardtospell.com - no kidding, check her site out... ) Alanabit, thanks, and I will try and stop by, it does take me out of my troubles to be here, Sarpi! Thanks so much, I will post a link to my photos, there are a lot of photos of EMTs. Whenever I find myself taking photos of ambulance workers I think of thee. Two Marys, thanks so much. Genie and I really enjoyed that gathering. We don't get out much these days, I had to cancil my yearly four day birthday break in Quebec this year. Kev and Giok, I so miss it on the other side of the wet part of the world. I dream of going on a pilgrimage to find Anne Briggs and thank her for all the good songs, If I ever do, I will be so sure to say hello to both of you and all my other friends between London and the highlands up north, Dear Bonnie - is that Banjo playing Bonnie? Thy two dear pictures look down at me every morning.

So, there we are, Zenya, of course thanks so much for dropping me a note about this thread. Joe, sorry I forgot to log in above, and all the best to you and your dear family... rereading my earlier reply, I see among my many misspellings, I wrote Kai, in stead of Kwai, in the Innu greating, Kwai Kwai.

Much love, dearly felt and sent to all of you,

Lor

Dear Giok, that means so much to me. I have been dreaming about the western isles, ever since the fishing was so cruely destroyed by the common market. The idea that the same nations which pushed to destroy Scottish fishing would get the contracts to scrap the boats, new ones even, sailed by heartbroken crews to be destroyed by the same ones who wished them gone from the seas... I wanted to photograph those communities, during these dark days, show the world the great place that is being hit so hard.
A warm welcome in the highlands, I found to be as warm as the world offers, and would so welcome that today...
Sing you o the coolin o Skie... Joy o my heart, Erleen Mullagh...
Go raith maith agut,

Wish I could play banjo! No, I'm a harp-playing Bonnie, based in Ireland (California-born) and you have never met me.

I'm horrified to read of the ill-treatment you received in Listowel - the Irish are usually so warm and welcoming, and such great fun. Maybe fame twists one's head around back-to-front, I don't know. Don't let it stop you coming back to the shamrock shores, though -

Remember you have a lot of friends - old and new - in the cyber-alternative-universe all over the world, who are rooting for you and willing you strength and peace of heart.

All the best, Bonnie II

Larry--I just want to send off my good wishes to you. I am sad to hear of the misfortunes that you are dealing with. I extend my kindest thoughts to you and your family, and, particularly, my warmest regards and best wishes to your mother.

It has been my contention for a number of years that when a family member has heath problems, dealing with those problems often is easier than dealing with problems created by other family members.

Long standing family issues, petty jelousies, resentments, and unresolved disputes often emerge while dealing with seemingly unrelated issues. And, also often, these hidden issues are subsumed into conflicts about money.

I know about these conflicts from long first hand experience, and sadly, have no solid advice on how to deal with them. Patience and persistence have some value, but some issues may never be resolved, and you are compelled to live with them.

If it's any consolation at all, every family that faces these situations has the same problems, and so a lot of us have figured out both the solutions for problems and the ways to live with them. Feel free to ask, any time.

Larry, like so many others I've wondered in recent months where you were -- thanks for letting us know what's going on with you!

It's so sad that you must deal with difficult relatives in addition to the strain of caring for your mother. Nearly two years after my father's devastating stroke, which left him deteriorating physically and unable to communicate in any way other than vague indications of pleasure or displeasure, my mother and brother and I finally made the wrenchng decision, with the doctor's encouragement, to remove his feeding tube and let him go. This of course occasioned a lot of opinionating among family and friends, and in one evening I was yelled at over the phone by one person for "murdering" him, and by another for letting the situation go on so long. Wouldn't it be nice if friends and family could just be supportive? In a perfect world...

But you are a person of real inner strength, and you will make it through. When you do, we'll be most happy to see you here again regularly. And, of course, we'd love to have you come to the Getaway again -- you made a real contribution the year you were there!

Best wishes to you and Genie (may she mend quickly from her terrible accident!),

Nancy

Only yesterday Nessie and I were bemoaning the state of society in these parts, and Nessie said "there are plenty of good people, it's just that often they don't get a say or we don't get to hear about them".

Dear Lorcan,

We've not had any signifinact exchanges over the years here on Mudcat, separate interests I suppose. But I have read your posts with interest.

Now when you are caring for an aged parent we do have a common experience. Like Nancy my aged parents required my care in their final years and I have no siblings. First to watch your parents age and ultimately die is hard enough. When disease and the accompanying financial burden and the whole hospital experience is added to these it can be a long nightmarish, burden.

Yet, you have chosen to spend your days with your mother, sharing her rememberings. You could have made no better choice. I believe you will cherish the memories of this time and know you've given the full measure of love.

I'm proud to have been associated with you here, if only tangentially.

Larry
great to hear something of you again. Sorry things haven't always been great...but the same islands are still out in the west and the same tunes and songs are played...and some good new ones.
Good feelings from
Greg

Larry, I haven't known you at all before now, but I sympathize and empathize with you as a fellow caregiver for a demented loved one. I'm in that situation for the second time these days, so I'm only too familiar with it. Thankfully, I haven't had the added burden of criticism from another family member. Nobody who isn't there with you on a 24/7 basis has any business criticizing or judging your efforts.

I also sympathize with your other troubles, but in those cases I'm glad that I don't have similar experiences of my own.

At the risk of being accused ot thread-drift, I am extremely curious about something SINSULL wrote, above:

"I can get into multiple porno sites and often do as part of my job."

Tell us about your job, please!

Lorcan, it's good to hear from you again and I hope things go well for you. From time to time I listen to the CD you sent a few years ago and wonder what you are doing now.

Best wishes all the way from Sydney, Oz,

Cheers
JennieG
