Just seen an ad. on the Arts Council listing for this, just in case it doesn't make the general folk press.

That's uncanny; mrsleveller was just saying the other day what a great job it would be to work for Beverley Folk Festival. Thanks for posting this BB - I think she could well be applying.

There was a lot of criticism about the decision to headline this years festival with the Buzzcocks but it was a popular ticket on the night. As the organisers are just advertising for a festival administrator, what advice could we give to the new incumbent about the types of act we would like to see at Beverley in 2009?

Ideally we want acts that would combine credibility with popularity and are not appearing at every other festival in the country so I'll start off with a few suggestions for both headliners and other interesting acts that I think might fit the bill:

Steve Earle, The Proclaimers, Joe Brown, Ian McNabb, Mercury Rev, Colin Macintyre(aka Mull historical Society), Kevin Montgomery, Sonny Curtis, Sufjan Stevens, Saw Doctors, Tom Russell, Barenaked Ladies, Bert Jansch and/or Pentangle, Decemberists, Dougie Maclean, Eels, 4 men and a dog, Gomez, Alan Taylor, John Hiatt, Karine Polwart, Kieran Halpin, Kings of Convenience, Michael Chapman, Michael Hurley, Strawbs, Richard Thompson.

I am well aware that no large venue will be available in 2009 but several of the clubs in the town (conservative, Armstrong's), the local grammar school hall and Hodgson's main room could hold 200 – 300 and most of the acts that I have listed would play well in such venues.

I'm sure that there are many who will agree/disagree with my choice and have suggestions of their own............

Is the Minster no longer available as a venue? I saw the Waterson Family concert there two or three years ago and I'm sure there was more than 300 in that wonderful building that night. Added bonus you didn't get all that perpetual lumbering about looking for 'pints' either!

And St Mary's church too - only a couple of hundred yards from my house!

Please note the job is for "Beverley Festival" not "Beverley Folk Festival" Wonder if that is a slip?

Given the size of venue and festival marquees that some of Rogers acts are playing this year (and presumably the fees they are charging) I don't see them being feasible in 200-300 seaters.

I wouldn't give them any advice unless I was eminently qualified to do so, which I'm not.

Not only that, Oggie, but it's for an *administrator*, not a director. I doubt that the administrator gets any say in who's booked.

Glad to have been of service, Leveller. Tell her 'Good luck'.

Well, I put "folk" in the title, to clarify based on the following:

The Beverley and East Riding (Folk) Festival has developed over the past 25 years into one of the most respected and vibrant festivals in the UK. The festival is looking to broaden its appeal in the future with a wider range of arts activities and musical styles. To ensure the continued success and development of the festival, we now seek an Administrative Officer to work in the Festival Office based in North Dalton, near Driffield, in East Yorkshire.

Should I change it?

The Minster is used as venue for many things. We have even heard rock bands playing in there.

So, its not going to be a folk festival and its not going to be in Beverley. I hadn't appreciated that the decision had already been made.

LBK

I wouldn't presume to tell the organisers their job. However, plenty of people have been quick to say what they didn't like after the event, so I thought that it might be constructive for some of us to put down who we would like to see whilst there is still plenty of time to act on those suggestions.

However, nobody else has put forward any acts so, perhaps, I am alone in this

I'd also like to add Paul Heaton to my original list(see review in the Guardian today).
