Subject: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Tig Date: 23 Jul 08 - 04:26 PM It's nearly time for Saltburn so I hope you've polished your tonsils, got out your towels and decided if you are entering the song competitions. I know quite a few Catters go there. Any names yet - other than me and The Badger? Betsy should be there too. Word of warning to campers: There is NO MOOR AND COAST on the campsite (or anywhere else) at the festival this year so don't forget to pack your own tea, coffee and food. See you there. Hugs Tig xxx |

Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,Betsy at Work Date: 07 Aug 08 - 03:46 AM Totler , just looking at the map now - with the sea behind you , it is to the right of the Marine Hotel - very adjacent as we say - it almost looks like the same building. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,Betsy at work Date: 07 Aug 08 - 06:56 AM Apologies Tootler for the mis-spelling - did a similar thing with Villan - wrote Villain . I must pay more attention. |

Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Betsy Date: 07 Aug 08 - 01:11 PM True enough Padge - and on the the back of recent news one or two more unexpected strangers. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: sapper82 Date: 07 Aug 08 - 01:56 PM Just had a look and the Pickering FF site and see the cancellation is due to standing water on the site. Ironic as the Waterboys feature prominantly on the page! |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Banjiman Date: 07 Aug 08 - 02:19 PM Sapper82....stop gloating, some of us had the biggest gigs of our lives (to date!!!) lined up for Pickering. We might creep over to Saltburn at some point over the weekend with our tails between our legs and sing a couple. If we're still welcome of course. Paul |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: sapper82 Date: 07 Aug 08 - 02:34 PM Sorry Banji, was meant to be ironic not gloating. Can't afford Saltburn this year anyway. Just thinking that I'd have arrived, had swim at Runswick Bay, got the tent up and be enroute to the Cutty Wren by now! |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Tig Date: 07 Aug 08 - 03:32 PM Still no M&C I'm afraid Betsy. They are down in the deep south doing missionary work and feeding the natives! Of course you are still welcome at Saltburn Banjiman, as is anyone else who fancies coming. Shame about the booking. I'm surprised they've got the water problem. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: muppitz Date: 07 Aug 08 - 04:14 PM There will be M&C representation (i.e Me!) but sadly I'll have only enough to feed myself! Tried to convince them we could all pitch in and do both but since the old tent expired good n' proper at Fylde last year there was no chance of it! See y'all there! muppitz x |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Aug 08 - 06:36 AM Well, I had a great time, and being crushed into Betsy's bosom just added to the delights. Great venues, and full too. I never expected such a full room for a 10am "Breakfast with...", I nearly turned to Jez to say "see the crowd, stick with me and you'll be all right!" (in my dreams! I was busking in Jez's reflected glory). The Emmanuel Church acoustics were brilliant, and the soundman really knew his job - it was a real pleasure the sing there. Not that the Community Hall was any worse! And everyone so friendly, and Boro' Best is a lovely drop, and the Friday night singaround in the Con Club a treat for the ears (yes, even Betsy's and Ray P's alcohol-fuelled duet rendition of "South Australia"!). Big thanks to John Taylor, and in case he asks, "yes please!". |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Aug 08 - 06:39 AM Oh, and Vin has a new joke about the Teesiders, but I won't steal his thunder - I am sure it will feature at his next gigs. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Goldengob Date: 11 Aug 08 - 07:09 AM I agree with George's comments about the acoustics in the church - a real pleasure to sing there especially as we followed Marie Little and the Threlfalls - it suited their voices a treat. Great to meet up again George - will be in touch Dave F |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,Betsy at work Date: 11 Aug 08 - 07:53 AM Sorry for all the back slapping, but,George was as good(or better) than Vin G. had led me to believe. Good time had by all - all venues full,( including Nutty's PC / Workshop ) and great performances all round from all the guests (and) the winning songwriter Phil Drane. The alcohol-fuelled duet rendition of "South Australia" with Padge was a good way to wind-up the Wonderful Wilsons singaround. They make sure everyone gets a "go". |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,Fantum Date: 11 Aug 08 - 08:13 AM The Emmanuel Church always had the potential to be a great venue for good singers and yes the acoustics were brilliant, as a listener it made for a memorable experience. I missed Marie but it suited the Trio Threfall and You and Bill. I particularly enjoyed the latter half of your set when you seemed to have worked out the potential of the place and then used it. I look forward to hearing you when next you get up this part of the world. Fantum |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: muppitz Date: 11 Aug 08 - 08:17 AM I had a fantastic weekend, the Friday singaround was packed, spent Saturday with a bunch of my favourite people, and I have to thank the campsite stewards for pegging my tent back down at 5am Saturday morning, it was trying to get away while I was still in it apparently!! A personal highlight for me was Rich & Kev of Elbow Jane doing Mike Silver's "Reaching Out for Love", it's an amazing song performed amazingly well! Can't wait to see them at Shrewsbury. muppitz x |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Tig Date: 11 Aug 08 - 09:12 AM We had a great weekend too - despite Badger having to do penance and judging the 'Best Song in a Traditional Manner'. For those interested Steve Robinson won this year. Highlights for me were seeing 'Mim' Backhouse again after 30 years, Marie and Vin of course - oh, and for those who remember him, although many of you will have heard his songs, Bob Chiswick turning up and singing in the singarounds after too long an absence. Thanks to Johnny and Paul plus all there stewards etc. for a brilliant festival. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: nutty Date: 11 Aug 08 - 09:29 AM I can only agree with everything that has already been said. I had a wonderful time. Thanks to eveyone who came to the workshops - I'm already getting good feedback. Also thanks to Johnny Taylor for giving me an opportunity to host a 'meet' . Miriam Backhouse and Queensberry Rules - all lovely people. I really enjoyed it - I hope they did. My personal highlight was hearing the Sands Family - lovely songs - great family. I loved singing the 'Hug' song - now featured on an Imperial Leather soap ad. It's still going round in my head. Great singarounds everywhere - the masonic hall was an interesting new venue, the acoustics were amazing. Definitely want to sing in there again. Roll on next year. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Northerner Date: 11 Aug 08 - 12:28 PM I had a good time too. Although my storytelling only drew a few children they all enjoyed my stories, which is the main thing. An American lady came with her two small girls; they live in Dublin and are used to Irish traditional storytelling. Her pleasure alone would have made it all worth while for me. I really enjoyed the festival. I particularly enjoyed meeting Miriam Backhouse. She had enjoyed my singing of "Martin said to his man" at the Cutty Wren on the Thursday night and got talking to me at the festival later. We are both Bradford Unviersity graduates but she was there slightly before me. We had a really good natter about the songs that were popular in the days when we were both starting out. It was a pleasure to meet her. Diane Taylor |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: r.padgett Date: 12 Aug 08 - 09:56 AM I remember nothing! Thanks George P, Betsy has a lot to answer for! Nice one Steve Robinson and thanks to Glen Osborne, Mick McGarry, John Ingram [badger] for judging the "Fred" and all the contestants including Dave Cowan, Marj Paterson [Fyrish], Tracy from Edinburgh, Arthur Laidlaw, Ray Storrs, John Cherry and the lovely late entrant Jane who sang Little Musgrave [about 10 minutes i reckon] who also sang after the competition the Cuckoos Nest! Hope I have recovered for Whitby ff! Ray |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: ossonflags Date: 12 Aug 08 - 06:09 PM High standard of singers again Ray; once more well done Steve!!! |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,Phil Drane Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:38 PM Hi all, Just notice someone mentioned my name on this webspace as the winner of the 2008 Saltburn Songwriting Competition. My 'Song For Jackie' is now available for streaming on www.MySpace.com/phildrane. Hope you like it. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: theleveller Date: 27 Aug 08 - 03:54 AM Nice one, Phil. Hope to see you again soon. Are you going to Osmotherley? Pete & Jools. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,RB-1 Date: 24 Aug 12 - 06:57 PM I have to agree with George and Dave as well about the sound in the Emmanuel Hall. We played second on the Saturday evening and in spite of bringing our own mics and gear, sound check was just a matter of minutes. It's such a pleasure, working with REAL sound engineers. |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: Betsy Date: 24 Aug 12 - 08:13 PM RB-1 this is a thread from 2008 !!!!! ,surely you could have posted on recent 2012 thread(s). Sorry to have been a bother ....... |
Subject: RE: Nearly time for Saltburn. Who's going? From: GUEST,RB-1 Date: 25 Aug 12 - 06:21 AM No bother at all. I did a search for Saltburn and the remarks in this tread came closest to what I was about to post. Recent threads seemed not to. I was in Saltburn in 2008 as well, so in that way it made sense too. |
