No DC Area Chantey Sing Next Week! Aauugghh!! (or should that be "Aarrgghh!!"?)

I say we do an unauthorized, unsanctioned & impromptu Chantey Sing, downtown DC!

There is no way on the Great Green Globe that this can be scheduled to make everybody happy. If you can make it, great! If not, this might happen again, who knows? But then there's the beauty of a flash mob If I blast this out to the Chantey Sing List and Mudcat, we should get a enough people to make a credible mob. Face it, some of us have a head start on the mob-ishness.

Here's the plan:

Wednesday, July 30th (Nothing scheduled at Navy Memorial)
7:30PM
Rain or Shine!
Meet at Downtown at Navy Memorial. Right at a Metro stop.

We meet in front of The Lone Sailor Statue, we serenade him with "Nelson's Memory", (starting off with the usual closing number, marking our maverick status).
We sing till it gets dark, then wander off to a good restaurant, or back home to our humdrum lives.

Dress Code: Whatever. If you want to wear rig on the Metro (or carry it to work for us downtowners) that's great.

Remember the motto of the late Great Grace Murray Hopper, RADM, USN:
It's easier to apologize after than to obtain permission before.

Come all ye bold seaman wherever you're bound,
And always let Nelson's proud memory go round.
And pray that the wars and the tumult may cease,
For the greatest of gifts is a sweet lasting peace.
May the Lord put an end to these cruel old wars,
And bring peace and contentment to all our brave tars.

(On advice of counsel, I'm not using the term "Mob" in any sense)

In answering some questions that have arisen:
  • First, yes, this is aimed at DC Downtowners.  ALL ARE WELCOME
  • A couple of us are getting together for a pre-sing supper (Sorry Jacq!) at Elephant & Castle, 12th & PA at 6PM.  Join us if you can, we have a GREAT meal, then saunter towards the Capitol.  Who know, we may sing as we saunter.
  • At the Navy Memorial, in front of the Lone Sailor Statue, singing will commence at 3 bells of the 2nd dog watch (7:30pm for you civilians, 1930 for sojers & smurfs, for Marines, Mickey's little hand is on the 7, his big hand is on the 6!)
  • This will be a mini sing, just a proof of concept.
  • There are NO plans at this point to add yet another chantey sing to a crowded schedule
  • I plan to linger downtown afterwards, to make a general nuisance of myself, albeit carefully staying within the lawful confines of
    • DC ST § 22-1307 (Unlawful Assembly) &
    • DC ST § 22-1321 (Disorderly Conduct)

If you can't make it, mayhap you can go see Calico Jack, appearing at the Annapolis Maritime Museum in "EEESPAWT"  I have a feeling that Janie and Paulie will sing some sea songs (ya think?).

(Craigslist announcement is here)

It's over with, I can call it whatever I dang well please!

About 10 hardy souls showed up to serenade the Lone Sailor. A police officer strolled by, she didn't bother us, I didn't spit in her face or stove in her jaw, thus saving me six months in Old Walton Gaol. We sang two rounds, and were read the Riot Act (literally!). We peaceably dispersed, walking to Gordon Biersch for a bite and a brew. (I'm the one who read the Riot Act, just as a way of saying "You don't have to go home, but ya can't stay here!")

When's the next week without a chantey sing???

And of Course, Chantey Sing at the Royal Mile next Tuesday!

Our sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons,
being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably
to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the
pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for
preventing tumults and riotous assemblies.

God save the King.

What's the sea music schedule at either end of Getaway, the weekend of October 4-5? It might be nice to drop in on one if one were actually happening.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
