Subject: Folk club for Erics From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Jul 08 - 04:25 AM I was replying to one of Tabsters threads. And I jokingly wrote, I saw Eric Taylor and Eric Bogle play there - so perhaps they only book acts called Eric. In the harsh light of day - I think that seems a fairly reasonable booking policy, certainly more sensible than most. Then I wondered, would it be sustainable? Are there any more Erics you could invite? |

Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 25 Jul 08 - 05:52 AM We had an 'Eric hour' in our singaround at the Tap and Spile Whitby one year. You had to get the name 'eric' in your song. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: The Borchester Echo Date: 25 Jul 08 - 06:02 AM Eric the band (Nigel Chippindale, Colin Thompson & Ralph Jordan)., sadly no more and never (as far as I know) recorded. Nigel's tune book, Chippindale's Cheery Tunes has one called Eric's Birthday, almost unplayable but it will keep you busy for hours trying to. |

Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: The Borchester Echo Date: 25 Jul 08 - 06:13 AM ERRATUM (looking at cover) Nigel Chippindale's book is called Chippindale's Cheery Chunes. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 25 Jul 08 - 07:47 AM As Diane says... There once was a band called ERIC. Unlikely to reform as the boss Nigel C died in 1986. I do have recordings, and maybe one day I'll put them out. In the meantime Good Luck and Good Hunting to all Erics out there. Ralphie (How surreal is that?) |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 25 Jul 08 - 07:59 AM 'Eric' the band. Very happy memory of a gig they did at the Steamcoach Folk Club, Boxmoor in '85 I think, Sue Farthing (Parsons) was the organiser and a great job she did too! Yes please Ralphie, get those recordings out, the world needs to know! |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Spleen Cringe Date: 25 Jul 08 - 08:25 AM And of course it should take place at Liverpool's former top night spot (now I think dufunct)... Eric's. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: GUEST,Besty at Work Date: 25 Jul 08 - 08:33 AM I found this recently when looking at a thread named "odd pub names". Submitted by a great man Barrie Roberts,God bless his soul in 2005 .... Then there was the white horse who went into a pub for a drink. The landlord served him a beer and said, 'It's funny you coming in here'. 'Why?' asked the horse. 'Well, the pub's named after you'. 'Really -- that's extraordinary. Why did someone call a pub "Eric"?' Cheers, It made me laugh Betsy |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: quokka Date: 25 Jul 08 - 08:49 AM 'The White Horse' was my favourite book as a kid...guess who else's favourite book it was? |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 25 Jul 08 - 09:26 AM Firstly Hi Betsie.....Yep, that was the joke that we named the band after. Only difference, was that the drink requested was Whiskey!! Hence the White Horse moniker. An aside, a lovely man called Bryan Lock, Slate maker of Sidmouth, made three slates of the White Horse of Uffington. One for me , One for Colin, and one for Nigels parents, at the Sid Fest after Nigel died. It's on my wall as I speak, and Yep.....It's called Eric! As far as the recordings are concerned, they are safe and well, who knows, maybe they will see the light of day someday. Anybody fancy spalashing the cash??!! (after all we can hardly go out and gig anymore.) Good Wishes to all, and especially all ERICS. Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Splott Man Date: 25 Jul 08 - 10:31 AM Eric Idle? Did he write the song, Eric the Half a Bee? Clapton? He once did a floor spot at Dorking Folk Club (with John Martyn), and the MC didn't realise who they were until they played. |

Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: kerry and Mandy Date: 25 Jul 08 - 11:11 AM a friend of our calls all his plecktrum's ERIC does that count???????????? |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Jul 08 - 11:59 AM I think its pretty obviously a crap idea - the club would have to stop after about three weeks. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: G-Force Date: 25 Jul 08 - 02:37 PM There is a track by Eric, the band, on 'Anglo International'. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 Jul 08 - 03:24 PM We have a box called ERIC - the Electricity Related Items Container. We put all the spare leads, cables, computer bits and plugs in it. Can never find a damned thing. LTS |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Big Al Whittle Date: 25 Jul 08 - 03:55 PM Notwithstanding, the folkscene is suffering from a deficiency of Eric's. The club is simply unsustainable. |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Anne Lister Date: 25 Jul 08 - 05:25 PM I think you've also got a generational problem ... there aren't too many kids born in the past couple of decades called Eric, at least I haven't met any myself in all my years of teaching! Which means that fairly soon your club will founder for lack of new blood. Or would you move on then to Kevin? Anne |
Subject: RE: Folk club for Erics From: Georgiansilver Date: 25 Jul 08 - 05:35 PM Remember Eric a Roe...at Twickenham....ran bare breasted across the rugby pitch...... |
