Harpy, I hope you can do ABC. You'll find it here. I found it by searching a huge page called the Web-Wide ABC Index.
Now it's going to bug me for a long time, because that tune is very familiar to me. I can't think of where I've heard it. My best guess is a Bok-Muir-Trickett CD, but I really don't know. You're right - it IS a wonderful tune.
-Joe Offer-
Ah, thank heaven for search engines. It's played on a hammer dulcimer on a Bok-Muir-Trickett CD called And So Will We Yet. It's a great CD, and this cut is, like, ultimate cool. Hey, Sandy, when do I get my payola check????

Here's from the album notes, written by Gordon Bok:

GÅNGLÅT FRÅN MOCKFJÄRD

(pronounced) "Gonglot fron Mockfyard" - a walking song from the town of Mockfjard in Sweden. I (Bok) first heard it from Dave Kaynor, who collected this and many other fine tunes over the years of his travels in Sweden. Dave says it was made popular by Anders Frisell of Mockfjard, "a powerhouse in the fiddle tradition over there."

An alternate title is "The Summer Farm and Summer's Joy," harking from the days when the women used to take the children and animals up in the hills for the summer while the men would work the fields down in the floodplains where their winter farms were. Some of these tunes began their lives in those hills, as a way for the women to communicate with each other over long distances.

Dave, who lives in Montague, Massachusetts, uses it as a processional, when musicians have to walk from one place to another in company: a very exciting sound.

Thank you Joseph! I did hear it on the bok-muir-trickett cassette but didn't have liner notes so I am delighted to read those you have so generously provided. I downloaded ABC finally and I guess I'll have to figure it out...but I am sooooo lazy...I'd rather lie on a riverbank and sun myself than do any kind of work! It's going to be a challenging auotharp tune!
love and kisses, harp

This is described as a Swiss walking song but perhaps it is really a "waulking song"? Anyone know?

Definitely Swedish (from Sweden) and not Swiss (from Switzerland). gång means walking, låt means tune, so gånglåt = walking tune.

Yes OldPossum, I meant Swedish but could gang mean waulking????

I am not an authority on folkdancing or languages, but the Swedish word for "to waulk" is "valka", which is a completely different word than "gång". Nor have I been able to find any connection between waulking and gånglåt or any other Swedish folkdance. As I understand it, the gånglåt is a kind of processional march, or a dance that mainly uses walking steps. It should perhaps be emphasized that a gånglåt is a tune and not a song (in the Swedish tradition anyway). A comment from a Swedish mudcatter would be welcome!

You can find George Wilson's multi-fiddle version of this on his album, 'The Royal Circus', along with some other lovely stuff. I'm guessing he, too, got it from Dave Kaynor.

I couldn't obtain the tune at the link posted by Joe and Alison in 1999, but the webwide ABC index link also posted by Joe O still works and referred me to this site http://www.leeds.ac.uk/music/Info/RRTuneBk/RRtunes/RRtunes.abc

There is a Swedish fiddler Ellika Frisell who gives workshops in Swedish fiddling. I wonder if she is any relation to Anders Frisell, from Mockfjärd? I have that tune on a c.d. Svenska Spelmanslåtar, Fiolen Min.

The dots for this tune appear in David Oliver's "The Folkworks Session Collection - Volume 3 : More Great Tunes" under the title Gärdebylåten (Gardebylaten in case the diacritical marks don't appear properly). I have all 3 volumes of the David Oliver books and they are excellent.

Gärdebylåten appears in this book on the same page as another popular Swedish Tune Äppelbolåten (Appelbolaten). I also have Nick Barber's "English Choice" book where Äppelbolåten is listed under the name Gånglåt Från Äppelbo.

The group I play in loves these two tunes and we will definitely be playing them in sessions at Sidmouth. Anyone care to join us?
