Subject: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 03 Aug 08 - 06:40 PM What's on in Manchester? (That's a question, not an announcement.) Here's what I know about. Hopefully more knowledgeable people can provide updates & corrections, and less interested people can ignore. I'm concentrating on clubs and singarounds rather than sessions, but only because that's where my interest lies. Weekly: Swinton Folk Club (Monday) Midway (ex-Red Bull), Stockport (Monday) the Crown, Stockport (Tuesday) Chorlton Folk Club (Thursday) Full Circle, Prestwich (Friday) Stalybridge Buffet Bar (Saturday) Open Door, Oldham (Sunday) Monthly: The Beech singaround, Chorlton (first Wednesday) And, er... that's it. Or is it? Does anyone know about - the Jolly Anglers Sunday night sing (listed on Folk Orbit, but I've never heard anyone actually mention it) - 'Googlies' in Didsbury (ditto) - whether the Song Carriers are still meeting in town - whether anyone meets in the town centre since the Full Circle decamped - anything else I've missed? |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Aug 08 - 07:36 PM England, England, so good they named it twice... |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: 8_Pints Date: 03 Aug 08 - 08:01 PM Many of the people involved in the Song Carriers now go the monthly meetings at the Beech, Chorlton. Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 04 Aug 08 - 04:05 AM Bob - I had my suspicions! I'm just wondering what to do with the rest of the month. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Jack Blandiver Date: 04 Aug 08 - 04:12 AM There's a monthly (last Friday?) storytelling meeting at The Chopin Bar in Chorlton too; we went along to the first one & it was a belter, so hopefully we'll be getting back one of these days... |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Stu Date: 04 Aug 08 - 04:22 AM Irish sessions can be found on the website Ceol Up North. Some world-class players can be found in many of these sessions, especially The Union on Wednesday, The Jolly Angler on Thursday and Saturday and The Magnet in Stockport on Sunday afternoons. The Harrington Arms in Gawsworth (near Macclesfield) is a mixed session and although I haven't been for over six months due to developing tinnitus I'm hearing good reports from my friends who still go. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Alan G Date: 04 Aug 08 - 01:29 PM Songs in the Snug at the Saracen's Head Warburton on 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Stu, you should have mentioned that you occasionally get the odd song at the session in the Harrington. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 08 Aug 08 - 06:31 PM The Saracen's Head is starting to sound appealing, although meeting in a pub & not drinking would be a wrench. Any other thoughts on these? - the Jolly Anglers Sunday night sing (listed on Folk Orbit, but I've never heard anyone actually mention it) - 'Googlies' in Didsbury (ditto) - whether anyone meets in the town centre since the Full Circle decamped |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Les in Chorlton Date: 09 Aug 08 - 04:13 AM Perhaps we could get a small coach to visit the Saracen's from Chortleton? |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: GUEST,Alan G on a borrowed computer Date: 09 Aug 08 - 06:01 PM You'd be very welcome Les, so long as you leave Piddling Pete (or is it Wee Man?)back in the Beech. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Les in Chorlton Date: 10 Aug 08 - 03:22 AM I think you are safe Alan, the Wee Man only does home matches! Cheers |

Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: GUEST,Mad Jock Date: 11 Aug 08 - 12:15 PM Take a look on the Folk Orbit web site . It gives lots and lots of info for Manchester and the surrounding area. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 11 Aug 08 - 02:24 PM I started with Folk Orbit - see my first comment on this thread. I'm not sure how up-to-date FO is, and I'm curious to know where Manc folkies are actually going. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 26 Oct 08 - 06:18 PM OK, so including the , and ruthlessly excluding anywhere without an M or an SK in the postcode, we've got Weekly: Swinton Folk Club (Monday) Midway (ex-Red Bull), Stockport (Monday) Sale Folk Club (Tuesday) the Crown, Stockport (Tuesday) Chorlton Folk Club (Thursday) Full Circle, Prestwich (Friday) Stalybridge Buffet Bar (Saturday) Monthly: The Beech singaround, Chorlton (first Wednesday) Storytelling session, Chorlton (last Friday) Any more? |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: John J Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:02 PM Songs in the Snug, at the Saracen's Head, Warburton, near Lymm. 2nd & 4th Wednesdays. songsinthesnug@yahoogroups.co.uk John |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Brakn Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:46 PM Also, a folk club starting in Sale. Tuesday night? I'll have to find the local rag. I don't know anything more. |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:47 PM John J - in my revised list I was being ruthlessly Manchester- and Stockport-centric, but I guess the Saracen's Head can sneak back in. Incidentally, "including the ," was supposed to be "including the new club in Sale". |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: GUEST,Peter Stockport Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:50 PM |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: GUEST,Peter Stockport Date: 26 Oct 08 - 07:57 PM Blimey that went before I could stop it! Pip, are you visiting or are you in Manchester? Be ineterested to hear your comments on the clubs you visit! Do you want sessions or singers? Ye Olde Vic in Stockport has sessions o the 2nd and 4th Wed but there's singers at the Saracens! Glossop is within easy reach with lots of good music as well! Googlies is still going! Cheers Peter |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Phil Edwards Date: 27 Oct 08 - 03:55 AM Hi Peter, In no particular order, - singers - I live here, but I'm a relative newcomer to the folk scene (started going to Chorlton Folk Club in 2002) - the Beech sing (go round the room, mostly traditional, mostly unaccompanied, plenty of choruses) is my favourite singaround; on a good night it's one of my favourite *experiences* - Chorlton FC (get up on stage, mostly new material, mostly with guitars, not much joining in) is a good night out, but doesn't hit the spot in the same way What kind of thing happens at Googlies? |
Subject: RE: Manchester, England, England From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Oct 08 - 04:33 AM Phil, Full Circle Folk Club, Prestwich, Greater Manchester Friday night I believe - Kevin Tarpey organises songs and good company - but I have forgotten the name of the pub. L in C PS i find that Singaround at the Beech on the first Wednesday rather good fun too! |
