"The gay goshawk came to my window sill..." is a bit too difficult for me to transcribe. If someone has the lyrics ready I'd love to see them here. Thanks.

Mind: It is not one of the traditional songs about a gay/jolly goshawk.

Wolfgang

I'm unsure of a couple of the lines, but it's something like

The gay goshawk came to my window sill
The snow it fell fast and the stars stood still
Oh won't you take me in from the storm
Won't you take me between your sheets so warm

Gold is the feather on his wings so fair
His eyes were so bold like silver so rare
As I laid his fine body upon the pillow
He became a man light as a willow

Don't breath a word, don't scream, don't shout
I can turn the whole world round about
Lay the Moon flat on the land
Twist a rope out of flying sand

Whispering willies have you beguiled
Now that he's gone she must care for a child
Jasmin's the colour of his hair
A nut-brown boy with a silvery stare

The night is long gone and the seasons slip by
Knowing seducers still give me the eye
But some cold winter's evenings alone I walk
I watch and I pray for my gay goshawk

Andy

Always nice to have an excuse to listen to Mr Fox, especially the Gay Goshawk which always brings a tear to my eye. I came up with this - the bits I'm not sue about in italics...

The Gay Goshawk (Carole Pegg)

The gay goshawk came to my window sill;
The snow it fell fast & the stars stood still;
Oh, won't you take me in from the storm;
Won't you take me between your sheets so warm.

Gold was the colour of his wings so fair;
His eyes they were bold and of silver so rare;
As I lay his brown body down upon the pillow;
He became a man - lithe as a willow.

Don't breathe a word, don't speak don't shout;
I can turn the whole world round about;
Lay the moon flat on the land;
Whisper rope out of flying sand.

Whispering women so happy beguiled;
Now that he's gone she must care for the child;
Jasmine's the colour of his hair;
The nut-brown boy with the silvery stare.

The night has long gone and the seasons slip by;
Knowing seducers still give me the eye;
But on cold winter's evenings alone I walk;
I watch and I pray for my gay goshawk.

I think that we've got it between us Insane Beard, upon further listening your transcript is correct with the exception of whisper rope out of flying sand which is twist etc. Pity about the whispering willies though...

Thanks a lot, lads.

I don't dare to guess what I would have made out of the song. "Lies as a willow" perhaps and I would have wondered about that figure of speech.....a willow is kind of bent....one has to bend the truth in a lie...; and a bit later I might have believed what I had "heard".

So - the final version!

The gay goshawk came to my window sill
The snow it fell fast and the stars stood still
Oh won't you take me in from the storm
Won't you take me between your sheets so warm

Gold is the feather on his wings so fair
His eyes they were so bold as the silver so rare
As I laid his brown body upon the pillow
He became a man lithe as a willow

Don't breath a word, don't scream, don't shout
I can turn the whole world round about
Lay the Moon flat on the land
Twist a rope out of flying sand

Whispering women so happy beguiled
Now that he's gone she must care for the child
Jasmine's the colour of his hair
A nut-brown boy with a silvery stare

The night is long gone and the seasons slip by
Knowing seducers still give me the eye
But on cold winter's evenings alone I walk
I watch and I pray for my gay goshawk

How about lyric add?

Oh yes - folk-rock when it still had an edge to it. Hadn't thought of that song in years - takes me right back. Unfortunately it takes me right back to being 14 and having a hopeless passion for a girl in the next street who I never even spoke to, so cheers for that...
