could anyone help, i am desperately trying to find a copy of the tv commercial for Newcastle Brown Ale with Owen Brannigan from the 1960's

info:

-          Product: Newcastle Brown Ale

-          Date: probably late 1950's / 1960's

-          Info: The late opera singer Owen Brannigan sung the theme tune……(to the lyrics of 'Cushie Butterfield')

-          It was set in a bar with two men drinking?

-          Lyrics :

"If you want a drink that's perfection indeed,
I'll give you a guide to fulfilling your need,
At home by your fireside, in club or in bar,
The sign of good taste is the famous Blue Star!
It's a fine beer it's a bonny beer, with the north's biggest sale...
For complete satisfaction, Newcastle Brown Ale...

NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE!!!!!

-          possibly only transmitted in the Tyne Tees region?

this is for a documentary celebrating the life of Owen Brannigan.
I have tried every possible place i can think of (ie brewery, advertising archives, tyne tees, bfa etc...)and noone has it!!

if any one can help please email me.....
production@planetnorth.tv

I always thought the 5th line was "It's a strong beer it's a bottled beer" etc
Good luck with finding it - a lovely advert well worth preserving.
Ray

The soundtrack of this advert seems to be on the CD listed here (track named as "Brown ale commercial") - halfway down the page, about the 20th album title:

There was also the advert that went:
If you want the best beer,
the best by any test beer,
you must have the ale that is fermentation fresh

It then went on to extol the virtues of Newcastle Brown and Amber Ales, to the tune of The Keel Raa.

I'd just like to find Newcastle Brown Ale itself, in the US, at a price that won't bankrupt me to drink it. Gawd, that's good stuff!

Got to make another trip to Old Blighty. On the other hand, _everything_ will bankrupt me over there, with what's happened to the dollar.

Oh well. We have better whiskey.

Peter.

In Newcastle we call it Dog; served with a half-pint glass. I don't live in Newcastle any more, but there are times when only a bottle of Dog will do...

Try Johnny Handle, who still sings it. He doesn't have a reliable email, but if you PM me, I'll give you his phone no.

1950's and 60's was a bit early for much off-air recording of TV, but TV and Radio amateurs might have done it. (Like the oldest Dr Who eposides)

Have you tried any of the amateur radio organisations?

That one's to the tune of Blaydon Races (also used for The Viewer ad), not Cushy Butterfield. And that ain't Owen Brannigan singing it.
I well remember the Newcastle Brown ad. We were taken from school to listen to an Owen Brannigan recital and (of course) requested it.

All a bit irrelevant as the stuff has been brewed in Tadcaster since last year. Gateshead was bad enough but...John Smith's? I hope the label on the bottle no longer has the Newcastle landmarks within the Blue Star.

To add insult to injury, St James's Park is to be rebranded the Smelly Trainer Stadium or something. What is the world coming to?

Hi.
Did you ever find a copy of the advert? It was filmed in 'The Jubilee' pub on Jubilee Road, Gosforth. I only ask because I am now also looking for a copy of the ad'.
