For the enlightenment of South Yorkshire folkies, the wonderful Brian Dawson will be appearing at Kiveton Park Folk Club on Tuesday 16th September. Brian will present an evening of traditional songs and music, mainly from his native Lincolnshire. He is steeped in the traditions, life and music of the area and performs with an enthusiasm that is infectious. Expect to hear many songs which you thought you knew, some that you do know and a fair sprinkling of comical anecdotes. Come down to Kiveton on the 16th for a great night with Brian Dawson. All welcome. Kick-off 8.30 (ish).

Regards

Andy

I'll second what Andy says. Brian's a lovely, talented and genuinely modest guy, with an utterly encyclopaedic knowledge of traditional songs and music from Lincolnshire and beyond, which he performs brilliantly. His anecdotes to the songs are magical. He's held in the highest regard by us Yellowbellies, a real treasure.

Performers of Brian's calibre are few and far between and, like all of us, he won't be around for ever. Be there, or miss something truly unique.

Absolutely NOT to be missed.

And for god's sake somebody please record it! And anywhere else he may turn up, and not just the songs, his knowledge, cos it's all in his head and on bits of paper. He's not the most organised collector!
He has precious knowledge which needs recording.

I saw him at Caistor, speaking at the local primary school, a couple of weeks back. I am not knowledgeable about traditional folk, nor is traditional folk music my first love, if honest. I went really because he was my music teacher at the same school when I was about 9. I wanted to say thank you and hi to a man who played a big part in inspiring me with regard to music, as a child...
However, I horoughly enjoyed his talk and musical examples and would go and hear him again. He knew so much and had so many interesting stories, yet was not arrogant. Just a genuine gentleman with a love of music and an amazing memory for wonderful musical facts and tales about Lincolnshire and further afield.
Go and see him! :-)

I'll be there tomorrow Andy and recommend anyone within striking distance of Kiveton to do the same. For me, Brian Dawson is the folksinger's folksinger, and a grand guy also.

George

Roy Harris booked the two of us to do a 'Brian double bill' at the Tiger a good few years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed everything Brian did and was struck both by his depth of knowledge and by his unassuming manner. Well worth seeing.

Nice to see the folk clubs recognising Brian these days. He used to say that The Tiger was only one of three folk clubs in the country that booked him - a grave oversight!

Andy,

The venue is still the cricket club?. (I haven't been for a year or more!).

Maybe I'll get along this evening, Brian is a lovely man and a great performer and collector.

Shame it clashes with my other love - otherwise I would have been there. And I echo Steve's remark - get a recorder on him.

I'd like to second all that's been said. I bump into Brian every year at Sidmouth. In addition to the compliments already paid, he's probably just about the best person I've heard to sing with an accordion and get the volumes of voice and instrument spot on.

Sorry I didn't make it Andy - I developed a bad back yesterday which has got progressive worse as the day has gone on. Not conducive to sitting still for more than a few minutes.

Hope you had a great evening.

Deirdre
