Looking for lyrics to "Deep Elem Blues". This is a jivey stringband blues, from the white mountain tradition, rather than the black tradition. Anybody know it?

I think you are wrong. Elem St was the black people's red light district in Houston Texas. The honky tonks and music halls were located there. The song originates in the Black honky tonks, but it was picked up by a White string band, which made it popular.

The Grateful Dead used to do a slow, blusey version of it, and Garcia also did a faster country version, on one of his country albums, with Grisman. I have a tape of the original White country band record and a newspaper article on the song's history somewhere. If I find them, I'll post some more info.

Does anyone have chords for Deep Elum? As I red through the messages I saw a thread about Brown's Ferry Blues. Are these two songs the same tune? Do I suffer from "bad ear syndrome?" woody

Well, Easy Rider, I am glad to see that you corrected yourself. Deep Ellum is IN FACT in Dallas, home at present to many ravers and punk rockers looking for a place to dance and sing.

One of the very best versions ever of "Deep Elm Blues"---the spelling doesn't change, only the pronunciation---was recorded by Josh (Buck) Graves and Kenny Baker on Dave Samuelson's Puritan label. The album was called "Bucktime" if I remember correctly and has to be one of the best records ever made in the genre.

I have a version of Deep Elem recorded by Wake Frankfield oop"s I mean Frank Wakefield, Mandolin player . Frank cut this song on an album called (Pistol Packin Mamma ) with Dave Nelson, Chubby Wise, Don Reno etc. Great Album if your into Franks stuff. Frank used to play with The Greenbriar boys . A N.Y. based bluegrass ,honky tonk group. I have the vinyl verson , I think there is one out there , the concrete version --Just pooling-- El Rastasaaaaaaa
