Just heard yesterday that the pub is closing in 10 days time. I know this has happened to a few folk clubs in the UK this year. It is still a shock, though especially for those who have come to the club for past 23 years or so (with a brief sojourn at another pub at one time)

The important thing is before the club rises like a pheonix in another location we want to go out with a bang at the Alison Arms. If you want to join us in a singaround next Wednesday 8 October 2008 from 8pm until late please do. As usual there will be free pies, hopefully some special pies to celebrate all the years of enjoyment at the pub.

Sad news indeed Simon. That is a long time for a club to go on. Think of how many songs must have been sung in that time, the friendships made and hearts reached. I know so many from the Alison Arms and love the place myself.

Having somewhere to share a song or two and enjoy a pie into the bargain does not sound a lot to ask.

Good luck with finding a new venue quickly and to fresh beginnings

That's bad. Still, at least you've had a bit of warning. The Railway (Lymm) closed without any warning whatsoever in the middle of the festival last year!

Good luck with finding a new venue; I'm not sure if I can make it on Wednesday, as it clashes with 'Songs in the Snug', and I doubt if I can persuade the others to make the trek. I'll see what I can do.

Good luck!

Bernard, thanks for your good wishes and remember Elvis the dog as he prepares to move home. He is still in good voice and will miss the festival in his back garden.

The classic for me was when the landlady of the Seven Stars in Wigan came and whispered in Joan Blackburn's ear at 11pm during the singaround that the pub was closing in 2 days.

I saw the 7 stars last week. Who set fire to it?

Hi Simon, yeah I was there that night at the 7-Stars!

Hope you manage to find a new venue very soon - I rarely got up to the Alison, 'cos drinking and driving don't mix, but I'll try and make it to your last farewell! If you move closer to Wigan, I might get there more often...?

Geoff

Paul - Last I heard they were blaming a homeless person seen leaving the building shortly before the blaze.

Geoff - look forward to seeing you next week. Might not be able to get nearer Wigan we do have some Leyland based regulars.

How could I ever forget Elvis the Dog?! He was my favourite backing group!!

Blaming a homeless person sounds rather contrived... or am I just cynical?

Hi Simon,

Sad news indeed. I only managed to get to Th'Alison Arms on a very few occasions, but was made to feel welcome each time.

Good luck with the future, and keep us posted.

Rest in peace, Alison Arms. I only made it there a few times but it was always very friendly. Hope you find a new location to carry on in for the next 23 years. Keep us all posted.

Leighton, just thought you'd like some proof you've been to the Alison Arms.

I am not going to make the Alison Arms on Wednesday, sadly. I will be thinking of you all and will try to ring during the session to send best wishes for the future.

With greats hopes of you finding another venue quickly

Just heard that the pub has a last minute reprieve. By the skin of its teeth it will stay open.

The singaround on Wednesday is now a Revival Singaround, still with celebratory pies. Celebrating the rescue, rather than mourning the loss.
