I thought the event was magic. Nice new venue, great sessions at Fagans and University Arms. Marra Skyhook and Jez were great. Survivors at Hillsborough saw Pat Walker at his best and an all too rare appearance of Kate Green what about booking her next year then lads

Can I add a positive note - I thought the organisation at Burton St. sound, lights, bar, food, parking, heating and a vote of thanks to Mike Steel and his team of stage builders and (already done by Jim at the festival) was great.

I couldn't comment on the breakfasts - but rumour was they were good too.

You know as well as i do Les how hard it is to satisfy everybody and most of us give our time up freely to enable others to enjoy themselves. It's not nice to get slagged off on a public forum.
I would consider Shoz being near to flaming, which isn't allowed on 99% of forums.
Shoz could have PM'd Jim, but obviously preferred to try and show him up in public. Not nice.

True Les. I hope that I'm not caught out slagging people off on a public forum. It's much better to give advice in a positive way, pointing out how things could have gone better, even if that does imply criticism to some.

Give it a rest Shoz. You could have sent a letter/e-mail whatever to the organisers complaining, but instead you come on here to publically have a go at somebody, who has given up their time to help the fringe element. . Poor show in my opinion.
I always say that if you are not happy, complain personally to the manager(s) don't make it public on Forums. It doesn't make you look good.
What is your real name Shoz, so that other Mc's know who they are dealing with in the future.

I've replied to Jim's points on the other thread but just to reply to the above -
- I arrived quite a while before ten, and I certainly wouldn't expect preferential treatment if I was known or otherwise. And several of those present did get more time than I did after my arrival.
- Jim, you are probably right that there are better ways to get a result than being rude, but to be honest by the time we left I wasn't bothered about a result - I was well p*****d off, as I bet you would have been in similar circumstances.
- I ran my first session over thirty years ago. That doesn't necessarily qualify me to run a session, but I do try to include everyone, and to be fair. And I'll stand by my earlier point that I don't believe the session was run fairly.
- As for melodeon, I also attempt to do a fair job on guitar, voice, harmonica, mandolin, etc, but I didn't get much chance to share that with you - and it is about sharing.

Jim,

Sorry we couldn't get there this year, but we were asked to support a charity fundraiser in Leicester.

We've been to your singarounds/sessions before and know they are fair and welcoming to everyone.

Don't let the buggers get you down!

Had to be a melodeon player didn't it!

Dave and Julia.

Jim I've PM you about something else, but would support any organiser who gives a fair balance to singers who have sat in the room since the start of the session compared to people who have only come in half way through.
I've even been to sessions where because the latecomers were 'known' they were given the rest of the session - needless to say I walked out of that one and it certainly wasn't ran by Jim.
Good luck to Sheffield 2009

So you were the person who shouted abuse at me as you left. I have and always run sessions as fairly as I can but just for evryone information the session started shortly after 8.30. There were already a lot of people wanting to sing and play (yes some were 'mates'. As I recall it I sang 3 songs so where 5 or 6 comes I'm blowed if i know (I went out of the session for 10 minutes to talk to a reporter qho was doing an article). Shoz you arrived at the session around 10, I did notice you and gave you a turn and I did notice that you were joining in with instruments in other songs/tunes. We did not have an extension this year so we had to wrap up at 11.20 (although agian you fail to mention you struck up a tune on your melodeon after the official finish). To summarise I believe I did things fairly (as I always do). You got a turn (although you arrived for the later part of the evening. I believe I was welcoming yo new comers. If you were unhappy the perhaps the way forward is not be rude on the way out I certainly wasnm't rude to you. Oh and by the way I've been running sessions for over 25 years what about you !

The festival was really good, especially the Sunday concert (probably where all the session customers were). Well done the Burton Street team, who made the whole thing work.
I had one disappointment on Sunday, though. Went to the survivors session at the Hillsborough, where it appears that you have to be a good mate of the session leader to get a song or a tune - I got one song whilst others were given 5 or 6.
I suppose I could have elbowed my way in in one of the quiet spells, but I don't like to breach session etiquette.
If someone sets themselves up as a session leader then he or she should be looking at ways of welcoming people, especially newcomers (I don't live in Sheffield).
Like I said, a disappointment, and I wouldn't be in a hurry to repeat that experience.
I'll be back next year for the festival, though.

This forum does some great workbut every now and then it turns up somebody like Mortimer. Leave your sniping with yourself. I've posted a response to your comments on the other thread. It was a great weekend with some fine music and song. If the 'free' sessions were not happening you should have come to the concert it was fab. Oh but then again you would have had to have paid for it !!!

I have also responded appropriately to the Sunday pm position elsewhere

I have now to eat humble pie in that when Dave from Rotherham sang Prospect Providence Perseverance (Keith Marsden song) I said that the gaffer went and "kicked t'machine" and not what the book ~ Picking Sooty Blackberries ~ says "kicked the sheep"

I have therefore advised the RSPCA accordingly of this West Yorkshire tradition

No sorry Dave!!

Sorry about that. I have just got home from a packed concert in the Burton St. Project where I listened to a great spot by Skyhook and a wonderful hour or so by Jez Lowe.

Sorry your session didn't go ahead. Any thoughts how you get sessions to go ahead- other than announcing a session will exist?

Of course you could just organise a festival yourself that consists of sessions with no artists booked and everyone sat around listening to each other. Not all that difficult after all.

If a session happens and people are having a great time for no contribution to the festival whatsoever - good luck to them. If that doesn't happen due to people going to the booked artists - tough.

Perhaps you should have shelled out for the Burton Street concert instead of just expecting to be entertained for nothing. Sessions are free, 'fringe' events and there's no guarantee they'll be well-attended. They are what you make of them.

Many thanks to all who came to the singarounds on Friday and Saturday
Fagans was as usual very busy with many old friends including Monologue John and Dorothy whose knowledge of old times songs and people are unsurpassed

Jim McDonald has done remarkable work to get this up and running in a short space of time

Burton Street is an interesting venue with some good potential

I particularly like the concert area in the Burton Street complex

Hope this turns into a regular venue

Slightly more detailed instructions from myself which may prove more useful!

The tram stop is on the East side of the station which is basically orientated North/South. West side is the main exit/entrance. The tram stop is signposted.

MC Fat is entirely correct when he says the tram you want is a BLUE route - he is not correct when he says it will be signed Middlewood - it will be "Malin Bridge". There is also a PURPLE route tram through the Midland Station it is OK to catch this as well. This will be signed "Cathedral".

If on a Malin Bridge tram that will take you to Bamforth St. as MC Fat says.

Should you get on a PURPLE route tram will go into the town centre, you need to get off there, cross the road and catch any tram - destination Malin Bridge (Blue) or Middlewood (Yellow) - both go via Bamforth St.

Full timetable including a map are here.

Trams aren't numbered in Sheffield they are coloured routes. Take the blue tram route from Sheffield Station Tram stop. These trams go through the town centre to MIDDLEWOOD. If you think you are going to use the tram later in the day to go one of the sessions buy a Day Rider at £3.50 otherwise ask for single to Bamforth Street. You must press the request to stop as the tram leaves the previous stop (Langsett Rd/Primrose View) otherwise the tram will go sailing past the stop.

Walk, taxi, tram seems to be from Sheffield station towards Hillsbrough that is up past City Hall, West Street, University of Sheffield, Langsett to Bamforth Street which I think is closest to Burton Steet

No doubt Mr Eyre a dee dar will be able to advise number of tram and if I have it nearly right

AND I should add - MC Fat is not a South Yorkshire man as Mr. Padgett and I are. This becomes obvious in the phrase "blacklead thee whippet" when a local would spell "thee"" as "thi" and would be unlikely to be able to spell whippet.

For those not entirely familiar with the South Yorkshire dialect - concessionary bus passes for those over 65 used to be valid only from 9.30 a.m. (now 60 and 9.00 am.)

However there is nothing like getting into the centre of Sheffield a little early if one can and thus those of us wishing to do so would try and squeeze this as hard as we could - trying to get on a bus at the dot of 9.29 with the cry of "Am I too early to use my concessionary bus pass" which became shortened in the local dialect to:

"Am I too early" And thus;

"Am a twirley".

I do hope this is now clear.

Sorry for the thread drift.

The supertram timetable is here.

I would normally have written "easy to use" but at the moment the server is down.

Elderly staggerers to bring their bus passes. Tram stop is five minutes walk.

Rest of the staggerers ask condcutor for best deal. Basically more than two journeys are best covered in a day rider. Supposedly non-transferable......
