I know it's early! and I could just work from 2008 lists... but want to start applying to play, and an up to date list would save so much time...

thanks
Sue

As last year, English Dance & Song magazine will publish a list of festivals in its Winter 2008 issue, due out the end of November. It will also go on the EFDSS website at the same time ... sorry, you'll have to wait till then, I am still working on it.

Thanks Derek, that's very helpful to know. Though I can't really wait til then for my purposes, as festivals seem to be booking bands right now... So guess I'll have to work from last year's list, and for any new festivals from your list - cheers.

Valmai - not really what I was asking for, but still really useful to know. I presume the list will be on the website at some point? I once went to one of your workshops, found it very good, and your list makes me want to go again! Gosh, didn't know Tommy Peoples was still alive! and can you tell me (it's probably obvious) - what does MS stand for? and what is Way through the Woods about?

Many thanks.

Sue

Way through the Woods is a Craig Morgan Robson project. Not sure how this one woll work , but the one at Whitby festival was a daily one hour workshop during the week of songs and narrations on the topic of woods and trees, ending in a concert at the end of the week. Tremendous fun and very effective.

The Scottish listings will be out fairly soon: the TMSA (Traditional Music and Song assocaition of Scotland) produces a free calendar of events every year, running from Jan-Dec, and the same info is available on their website, tho' at present it will prob only show the rest of 2008.
http://www.tmsa.org.uk/
Also Celtic Connections in Glasgow will be revealing all on 21st October, when they launch the Jan-Feb 2009 programme: check out:
http://www.celticconnections.com/

Also look at Living Tradition magazine for listings (currently trying out putting the mag online) or preferab;y subscribe to it!

Winter MS in the lewes list means Winter manuscripts, a collection from Somerset, originals at Halsway Manor, published last year.

Thanks to everyone who's answered Sue's questions before me, and my apologies for not having got back to this thread sooner - it's been a very busy weekend.

Not least because we've had the excellent young singer, guitarist and fiddler James Findlay with us at the Lewes Arms this weekend. He's a New Roots competition finalist and a cracking good performer with his feet firmly in the tradition, but willing to experiment and innovate. We were expecting something pretty hot as Matt and Dan Quinn spoke highly of him after the competition. James is based in Dorchester.

Regarding 'The Way Through the Woods' with Craig Morgan Robson: the idea is that groups of people will work on the songs and readings a bit in advance to bring them to the workshop day, when they can be polished and brought to stage standard. The whole show will then be part of CMR's evening performance at the club.

Come to think of it, that weekend is going to be a bit like a small festival in its own right with the two workshops and evening performance on the Saturday; so is Brian Peters's in Feb/March.

Oh, and the workshop list for the rest of this year is:

18th Oct    Coope Boyes & Simpson    Vocal harmony SOLD OUT
18th Oct    Georgina Boyes    Seminar: Wassails, Carols & Winter   customs (pm)

25th Oct    John Kirkpatrick    Modes (any instrument)ONE PLACE LEFT

22nd Nov    Roy Clinging & Neil Brookes    Cheshire tunes (any instrument)

6th Dec    Paul Hutchinson    Accordion
6th Dec    Paul Sartin    Fiddle
                Belshazzar's Feast (evening)

Dear Sue,

MS stands for manuscript. In this case it's a collection of tunes from an individual player in Somerset, William Winter, who wrote them down by hand in a personal notebook in the 1800s or thereabouts.

All the best,

Valmai
