Hi all.

Barry Gleeson recorded this on his first CD 'PATH ACROSS THE OCEAN'
It's a music hall song that was written, I think by Harry O'Donovan.
I have Barry's CD but I've misplaced and so don't have access to the song words.

Fresh fish!

I'll dig it out at some stage. My lady wife is singing in the chorus on that recording, IIRC!

Regards

p.s. Or was it the Irish Jubilee track!

I was able to transcribe this much from a sound sample:
...I was born at the daffodil time of the year
So they just called me Daffy, now maybe that's queer.
    But I'm—

[CHORUS?] Sweet Daffodil Mulligan I am
All my ancestors come from The Coombe
And I'm just such another, the spit of my mother,
The lady that lives in one room (Down in Francis Street)
    Sweet Daffodil Mulligan (Fresh fish!)...
Google Book Search found this review in "The Gramophone" (1939) edited by Compton Mackenzie and Christopher Stone:
Humour, such as Jimmy O'Dea (1899-1965) and Harry O'Donovan give in Fresh Fish is hard to appreciate when played "cold" to a microphone. A duologue such as this requires atmosphere, and apart from a few Irishisms there is none on this side of Regal-Zonophone MR3109. Still, O'Dea makes some amends for the dullness of this side on the reverse in another example of Irish humour, a song entitled Sweet Daffodil Mulligan....

Hi Fergus,
If you can wait til Friday nite, I'll give you the words. That's an interesting review of the old 78 recording. The A side in question was, I believe, "Dan Doogan's Jubilee", another favourite of Barry's.
                               See Ya Friday

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET DAFFODIL MULLIGAN (Harry O'Donovan)
From: Fergie
Date: 16 Oct 08 - 08:32 PM

hi all

compliments of our own domo and Twangman who each, alone, individually and independently did tonight supplied me with the unabridged lyrics, we can now add 'Sweet Daffodil Mulligan' to the DT. Thank you Tony and Mick.

SWEET DAFFODIL MULLIGAN

I'm Daffodil Mulligan, biddy's young girl.
And the fellas all say I'm a peach and a pearl
I was born at the daffodil time of the year,
So they just called me Daffy, now maybe that's queer

Chorus;
But I'm sweet Daffodil Mulligan, I am
All me ancestors come from the Coombe
And I'm just another, the spit of me mother,
The lady who lives in one room, down in Francis Street
Sweet Daffodil Mulligan, Fresh Fish!
Like the sweet Blarney roses that bloom,
I'm bright, hale and hearty, the life of the party
I'm Daffy, the belle of the Coombe, Fresh Fish!

It was out in Pine Forest, shady and dim
That I first met my Jemmy, so tall and so slim
It was at an excursion, the girls looked so swell
But I took the biscuit and Jem's heart as well

We were married in August when Jem was on strike
So he took me to Bray on the back of his bike
Now the strike is all over and Jem, bless his soul,
Has settled down steadily drawing the dole.

PS I love the song and I'm very fond of both of the benefactors,

Thanks to both the lads

Fergie

I don't suppose anyone has a recording of "Dan Doogan's Jubilee"?
Any help would be appreciated :)

Words for 'Sweet Daffodil Mulligan' are posted above. A sound sample of Barry Gleeson singing this song is available here. Barry Gleeson

This CD (Paths Across the Ocean) is brilliant and I recommend that you add it to your collection. If you want to hear Barry singing live then go to the Góilín Club in Dublin, he is there most weeks and never disappoints, he has a remarkable voice and an eclectic repetoire of mighty songs.

Maureen: A word of advice: If you want information of any kind at Mudcat, it's best not to post your request in a thread about a different song. The people who can help you won't see it.

There are too many Mudcat threads for anyone to read everything; most people look at the thread title to see if it's something they're interested in. No one will look at THIS thread except people interested in discussing "Sweet Daffodil Mulligan."

I suggest you start a new thread with the words "Ave Maria by Franz Abt" in the title.
