The list includes:

Owl TV
Deep Sea Fishing
Cats Do The Craziest Things

and

Legends of Folk Music.

Is there no end to this?

Ah, don't worry about it.

People mock what they don't understand, and media people also mock what they can't co-opt and shoehorn into their neat boxed-off formats.

If it's really bugged you that much write a letter to UK TV registering your complaint, but I suspect traditional music will survive some advertising wonk having a dig on a small cable channel.

I must say a line-up of Owl TV, Cats Do The Craziest Things, and Legends Of Folk Music sounds a whole bunch better than most of the endlessly-recycled output of the UK TV channels, where do I sign up?

I wouldn't mind, but the presenter is the most puke-making dork, with a stupid little-boy haircut (despite being in his late 40s). That's far more irritating than the reference to folk singers. Any advertiser whi has so little tatse as to use that prat can't be taken seriously.

On the other hand, the Country Life Butter ad featuring John Layden (Sex Pistols) at least acknowledges Morris to be 'Very British'... sadly, some of the subtleties of that ad are lost on many people...!

A great many adverts make a great deal of mockery about many types of people and interests/hobbies. All sorts of adverts are blatantly sexist, for instance, and I think so many '-isms' are covered with the advertising industry generally. In general I think Folksters probably get a little less fun poked at them than a lot more other groups of society.

Subtle ageism, sexism, racism, genderism, sizeism, hairism, etc., etc, runs through many adverts. So now we have folkism to add to the list. Folk is about and part of the real world. We know we are not doing any harm and are just 'normal' folks (whatever normal is) so I guess we have to be used in 'normal' life things.

I find far more offensive things being used in advertising, far less subtle too, so maybe this is a sign that Folk is now more mainstream and accepted as such?

I think it would be far easier to poke fun at BT than the other way around?

Here in the U.S., PBS will bring out all the "legends of folk music" at fund drive time to boost their pledges. Then, when they go back to "regular" programming, folk music is forgotten.

Eccentricity and handbags-at-dawn are fine things and probably far more traditional than most folk music...

Clearly a bit of fun, although I went through my TV channels and couldn't find anything remotely the same (yep I am gullible) for Legends of Folk

So I ask myself isn't it time that some of the great music and folk programmes that appear on TV on all channels started to appear and that an initiative to record archive and show our folk related musical heritage was put in place?

I have just seen the electric folk guitar programme, recently Ralph Vaughn Williams, Liza Carthy and The Transatlantic Sessions with Aly Baine and Phil Cunningham and Paul Brady

There are Legends of folk music such as the late Tony Rose, the living Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson (and family), Dave Burland, Nick Jones, Martin Whyndham Read and newer Living Tradition Bearers such as Keith Kendrick, Brian Peters, Cockersdale, Jez Lowe, Bob Fox, Steve Tilston, Steve Turner, June Tabor, Maddy Prior, Alison McMorland, Cilla and Artie, High Level Ranters and on and on___

So whats it all about and yes I did also enjoy Cambridge ff coverage ~ more power to yer elbow John Leonard and all!!

The media will never really go for folk music, because if the music's public domain, no money can be made off it through copyright. And if it doesn't make them money, it's okay to ridicule it.

It's revealing that the advertiser preferred to ridicule another channel (although fictional) rather than concentrate on what on what he had to offer. No doubt because he had nothing much to offer!

I used to make fun of the Big Joe Polka Show that comes on TV here. I got to watching it for laughs and turned out finding some songs that I really liked. Funny how things work that way but it does.

I'm not saying folkmusic is a branch of the entertainment industry, but you really do hear some VERY strange things around the clubs. more to do with the individuals need to get up and perform than a desire to give something to the audience.

don't get me wrong - the folkclub has always been a place to learn the craft. But really too often - you're left thinking - this bugger doesn't know this song, doesn't know how it goes, and he's making up the words....sod me! he doesn't care!

There's music channels for every other type why not folk.

I decided to contact BT to see what sort of response I'd get.

I wrote:

"I've been searching the schedules for the "Legends of Folk Music" programme that was pointed out in your recent televison advert, but have been unable to find it. Perhaps in future adverts you could indicate where we might find this programme!"

Their response:

"Thank you for your e-mail dated 14/10/08 about I want to complain - I have a general complaint. I am sorry that you could not find the programme you were looking for. I have escalated your suggestion to my colleagues in our Marketing department for consideration. We do appreciate the time you have taken in providing your feedback. All customer suggestions are valued so thanks for continuing to help us provide a better service. Thank you for contacting BT."

Yet again, fact is stranger (and significantly funnier) than fiction!

You really couldn't invent an answer like that, could you?

And I must confess to being rather excited by the prospect of my suggestion being "escalated". (Sounds a bit saucy to me, SNARFF, SNARFF!)

I think some of you have missed the point .. Kris Marshall's character in the ad is actually excited to watch "Bee Movie", (and would be prepared to pay for it!) which was pretty much rubbished by all reviewers. So his taste in programmes is likely to be dreadful anyway - so what would he know about quality programmes like "Legends of Folk Music"? If only it existed.

I think there is alot more jokes about how rubbish BT is in comparison to taking the michael out of Folk music. BT had a website dedicated to how bad they are as a service provider www.btsucks.org unfortunately it was taken offline because of excessive traffic, lol.
I would love to watch Legends of Folk Music, would be more interesting than most of the drivel on telly!

Well folks, they ran THAT ad again last night during the European football and guess what? THEY'D REMOVED THE LINE ABOUT 'LEGENDS OF FOLK MUSIC'!! It's been replaced by 'Pandora's Box TV' or somesuch.

And in the very same week we got Legends: The Chieftains on TV.

Coincidence? HA!

I like to be ridiculed. If I sought the hands down praise of the corporate world I would be a pop singer or writer. If they don't like me or my music then I am doing something right lol. If I don't like Brittany Spears why do I care if Britanny Spears doesn't like me. I crack on pop music and the mindless sheep that fall for all image and no conviction all the time. I really don't care if they laugh at me and my taste in music as well. That just means they don't get my beliefs and songs just like I don't get thiers. Let them bash me and folk music. If a top rated pop star opened for Bob Dylan I wouldn't go. If Bob Dylan opened for a top rated pop star I wouldn't go and would be mad that he was opening. Thinking about it that is dumb but that is sort of the mentality. I think everyone thinks they would like to have more Folk pushed by TV,Radio, and the music industry but if you really think about it would that really be that cool. Look at what the corporate fat cats did to rock, country, pop, just about every music style they decided to push. I think the idea is one that seems cool but in the end would be disastrous. I like it the way it is. I liked being mocked.

Talking about folk music being ridiculed - in Monday's Irish Daily Mail there was a strip cartoon with a picture of a new grave. On the tombstone there was the legend :-

"????? ??????, Morris dancer and banjo player". (Can't remember the name).

Around the grave the mourners had funny hats on and had drinks in their hand.

Didn't have the chance to check out the English version of the paper.

Yeah, I noticed that, SPB-Cooperator. They ran it at least twice last night during the footy on Channel 5.

Strangely though, whilst the first one had an obvious glitch, the second one apparently didn't (and I was looking out for it). Can they edit these things so quickly?
