Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Oct 08 - 07:36 AM I can only hope the others on that list are honored to be mentioned alongside Jean. To me, any and all awards and recognitions of her contributions to the world are overdue and inadequate. But congratulations anyway Jean.....although you deserve far more. Say, now that I think of it, NONE of the others made the Mudcat Cafe Hall of Fame! Now that was really an honor huh? (;<)) Spaw |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: Big Mick Date: 20 Oct 08 - 02:14 PM Professionally, and in person, this is one of the great folks ever. We all know what a legendary performer Jean Ritchie is, and we all know that her collecting work, her performing career, her writing, it is all the stuff that makes our heritage come alive. Her work will far outlive us all. But when you meet this person, you then realize that greatness of spirit, the loving soul that resides within, the sense that you have met one of the most genuinely nice people that God has ever blessed you to meet, then you know how much she really deserves all the honors that can be bestowed upon her. To me, this is one of the greatest awards she has ever received. That is because it is from her neighbors, from her community. Well done, darling friend Jean. Congratulations to you, to George, to Jon, and to all that bask in the warmth of your loving presence. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: Ron Davies Date: 23 Oct 08 - 07:45 AM This couldn't be more deserved. Jean is unquestionably one of the wellsprings of the music we love. In addition, songs like "Black Water" and "Cool of the Day" just in themselves make her immortal and her music indispensible. |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: Jeri Date: 23 Oct 08 - 09:03 AM There WAS a thread last year here. I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as 'too much recognition' for Jean Ritchie. The first instrument I owned was a 3-stringed dulcimer my mom bought for me. I can think of many times I've heard a Jean Ritchie song and been astounded at the elegance and eloquence. Voice as clear and pretty as a silver bell. Congratulations Jean! |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 08 - 09:05 AM Now I was going to add my two bits to this thread yesterday afternoon, but I got REALLY busy and never got to it. And I'm not just saying that, either. |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: gnu Date: 23 Oct 08 - 06:03 PM Been taking a break from work and hit the You Tube. Go there and type in "Jean Ritchie"... or "voice of an angel" - that oughta work the same. |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: Severn Date: 23 Oct 08 - 06:06 PM One of my all time favorite performers in any genre. Congradulations and thanks for the many hours from many years of listening and reading pleasure. There are many more halls you need to be enshrined in. |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 01 Nov 08 - 08:33 PM Hi everybody- Your posts all came in from Nov. 20th to the 23rd, and I was so nervous I barely turned on my computer at all, so just read them today. Now it's all over and I spent all of Friday and most of today, sleeping. It was mostly hip-hop and hard rock of one kind and another, and I kept wondering what the heck I was doing there. They kindly seated me and my guests at Table 1, making it easier for me to get onstage, but SQUARELY in FRONT of the SPEAKERS- my ears were nearly fractured by the time they called me, so I was a little shaky. Tom's dear wife is ill, and another good friend John Platt introduced me, and George, I guess, said a prayer. Our sons Pete and Jon supported me onto the stage and over to to microphone, and we stood for the song. By that time I discovered I was cool and collected, and said a few words about being both a Kentuckian and a Long Islander, having lived longer on L.I. than I had in Kentucky. Got a laugh. We sang without accompaniment, "Now is the Cool of the Day"(not wanting to bore them with a long ballad. I started, then each took a verse and the boys did harmonies on the choruses. You could hear a pin drop, and after we left the stage people told me that we had the only standing ovation of the evening!!! And I decided that it was fun being there, after all- the food was delicious..... Of course our L.I. paper, Newsday, mentioned my name in the list, but reviewed only the rock music groups- never said a word further about me. So much for my home community! BUT- Friday I was awakened briefly by a reporter from The New York Times (trumpets here), and she wanted to come for an interview, on Monday, for the Times. So- Newsday- Nyahh! Thanks so much to all of you for your good words and wishes. I hope to be a Mudcatter for a long time yet! Love and blessings, Jean |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Nov 08 - 12:26 AM And the Lady said, "I hope to be a Mudcatter for a long time yet!" Well that's funny Jean......We all hope the same thing! Sounds as if it all was wonderful and again, it is richly deserved. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - Long Island Music Hall of Fame From: katlaughing Date: 02 Nov 08 - 01:14 AM The TIMES! Whoo-hoo! That's super. I'll bet your unaccompanied singing was a very welcome respite from the raucousness that went before. How blessed that audience was to hear you and your sons, Jean. And, how blessed we Mudcatters are to have you among us. Good to hear from you, Dear Lady! luvyakat |
