Subject: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Locksley Date: 05 Nov 08 - 04:39 AM Hello :-) I'm about to spend a week on a narrowboat in the Lichfield area on the Trent and Mersey (hopefully with a nice lot of red wine and a log fire) and was wondering if anyone knew of any easily accessible folk clubs from the canal. I'll be a few miles either side of King's Bromley Marina... anyone know the area? Here's a map, if it helps Thank you! L |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Acorn4 Date: 05 Nov 08 - 11:14 AM There's a club that runs in Hopwas (in bewteen Lichfield and Tamworth) on Thursdays. Chequemates Folk Club, Coton and Hopwas Social Club, School Lane, Hopwas near Tamworth ( 0121 354 4234 ) Chequemates Folk Club I've only been on a couple of occasions as it's rather a way from where I live, but they were both enjoyable nights as I remember. |

Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: GUEST,Rich A Date: 05 Nov 08 - 12:25 PM There are sessions in some of the pubs in Lichfield, it's been years since I was there so it's probably worth looking at local listings. The Swan at Fradley junction is worth popping into for good food and beer. Rich |

Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Locksley Date: 06 Nov 08 - 04:48 AM Thanks everyone for your responses, I'll hopefully be able to get along to some! |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: GUEST,cresby.com Date: 06 Nov 08 - 11:48 AM Mr Red's website links to Bob Taberner's website (& other listing sites) which cover Lichfield, I believe there is Kulture in Tamworth but it may be hard to find. The North Staffs website lists a few too in Uttoxeter(pronounced Uchester), Eccleshall, & the Gamecock in Polesworth though don't expect to be served quickly at the bar, particularly if you are dressed in a rather eye-catching colour (inc cowboy hat). The radio Shropshire website is a useful resource too. Sunday night prog covers Heref, Worcs, Staffs, WM etc. There used to be a session alternating with Birmingham - not sure is it still exists. |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: GUEST,cresby.com Date: 06 Nov 08 - 11:51 AM Ah! - Abbot's Bromley has a session - see North Staffs website. |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Ruth Archer Date: 07 Nov 08 - 02:52 AM "Uttoxeter(pronounced Uchester)" Is it??!! |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Mitch the Bass Date: 07 Nov 08 - 09:29 AM The Abbots Bromley Session has stopped only a few weeks ago. |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Dick The Box Date: 07 Nov 08 - 01:27 PM As far as I am aware there are no sessions in Lichfield itself apart from the Irish one at the Horse and Jockey every other Monday. I believe that Tamworth Folk Club has not been at the Gamecock for many years - give Steve Edkins a ring on 01827 286001 to find out where they currently meet. He will probably be able to point you at anything else that is on locally. |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Mr Red Date: 10 Nov 08 - 01:35 PM Depends whether you come from Uchester or are going to Uttoxeter. Though I am a Stafordshireman - it was not normal to speak thus in Wedgebury aka Wodensburgh - those wot live in the area refer to them (respectively) colloqially. |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Compton Date: 10 Nov 08 - 03:22 PM Well now!!...Locals will pronounce Uttoxter "Utchetter" but the rest of Staffordshire would YEW-TOX-ETTER. Hope this helps!! |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: GUEST,baz parkes Date: 11 Nov 08 - 05:24 AM Mr Red I thought you were native to the Silly Isles? Baz long time resident of 'Umpshire... |
Subject: RE: Folk Clubs in Lichfield Area From: Ruth Archer Date: 11 Nov 08 - 05:34 AM Yes, Compton - I used to live in Lichfield, which is why I was surprised not to have heard the local pronunciation. I didn't realise it was THAT local! |
