A rare chance to see the great man at 10.45 tonight, 7th November.

If you know him you'll be there, if not then it could be a good place to start catching up on 40+ years of genius.

One of the best. I have always been surprised that he could sing so well with his tongue so firmly planted in his cheek.

Makes me laugh that a man who wrote a song called 'Rednecks', with a chorus about 'keeping the n****rs down', only suffered picketing of his concerts after he wrote a song called 'Short People'!
Seems that in his case being 'size-ist' is worse than being 'racist'.
Funny old world.

I love the man, and his music.

JM

Nobody but nobody has ever written a song to beat 'I Think it's Gonna Rain Today'

The video was set this morning! Randy Newman is that rare phenomenon - a man who can remain himself yet write songs from another's perspective and make a point with irony. "Rednecks", for me, has aways been one of his greatest statements - digging at people who consider themselves more "liberal" than the southern rednecks but, in reality, are no better or worse. And at least the rednecks are honest in their open bigotry. Those last lines of the song: "It's free to be put in a cage in..." say it all.

Anyway, sorry to go on a bit - I'll get me coat...

'......there's something in your eyes
mmakes me want to lose myself, in your eyes..'

Superb poet/lyricist!

Just catching this programme on video, over coffee and toast. Just as great as I expected. I love the New Orleans piano tinge on "Mama Told Me Not To Come" - and his chord progressions are to die for. Wonderful.

I adored every moment of it. The polemical 'A Few Words in Defense of Our Country' [his spelling], is inspired, erudite, and eye opening.
The piano accompaniment is masterly.
Thanks Mr Newman.
