Wayside Tavern - PETER ROWAN

INTRO:   D A D G A C#m G   D A D

D            A
Winter wind, whining low
D            G
Snow covered ground
A                   D       G
The midnight sky is black as ink
D                              A
Snowflakes like stars, fallin' down.

D             A
Wayside tavern window light
D            G
Beckons unto me
A            D          G
Tarry by the hearthside bright
D             A    D
And seek good company.

Chorus:
A               D
I stepped in to join the din
A                   D
So carefree and so loud
G       A       C#m   G
Just to lose ol' Mister blues
    D    A         G    A C#m G
And mingle with the crowd.
    D    A         D

D                           A
Blue light glows where the whiskey flows
    D             G
In amber down my glass
A                        D         G
Burns my lips like your passionate kiss,
D               A
I can't let you pass.

D                   A
Fiddles play love's melody
                     G
And calls us to the dance
A                   D       G
And your eyes, like distant stars,
D          A         D
Embrace me in your trance.

(Chorus)

D             A
Mornin' sun, new fallen snow,
       D               G
You're warm within my arms.
A                      D      G
Watchin' our breath in frosty air
      D                A
No strangers to love's charms.

D             A
Any time you want me
D                   G
I'll find a way to you,
A               D      G
By the wayside tavern door
    D       A             D
With my old friend, Mister Blues

Chorus:
A                     D
I stepped in to join the din
    A               D
So carefree and so loud
G       A       C#m   G
Just to lose ol' Mister blues
    D       A       G    A C#m G
And mingle with the crowd.
    D       A       D

quote: Ten or twelve chords? somewhat over the top I would say.

I've heard that before from country western singers. They seem patriotic about the three chord maximum, as with pickup trucks and not speaking Spanish in school. I've never tried to tell them they should use more than three, but they often tell me I shouldn't. I guess I'd better not sing Schubert's Ave Maria around them. I just counted and it turns out I use 33 chords for that.

Regarding Hootenanny's "...album notes indicate he was only one of three." Seems to be confirmed here:

"Song Information:

1. Wayside tavern 4:54
Composer:Peter Rowan-B. Logan-Peggy Logan; Sea Lion Music"

Ten or twelve chords ? somewhat over the top I would say. I think it was Harlan Howard who defined country music as "Three Chords and the Truth", and this is one song that works very well with three.
The guy on you tube above claims that Peter Rowan wrote this song but the album notes indicate the he was only one of three. Whatever, it is a great song when Peter sings it with Jerry Douglas. It needs to be sung with conviction.

If you're playing steel strings the subtlety of the minor chords would be lost anyway, except maybe the C#m. But there are also momentarily-added notes, which make other chords whose names I don't know. About 10 or 12 chords if you count those others. I write the added notes in lower case. For this song it would be something like this:
A             d    E          c#    C#m            (f#)    D         e
E       D   E   A         D   e   A    d   C#m    d    E    f# c# d A

It's a three chord song as done by this fellow.

Isn't the Stanley Brothers song called The Girl at the Bar.?

Wayside Tavern was written by B. Logan and Peggy Logan. (Tex Logan?). Peter's version with Jerry Douglas is I beleive in E. I sing it in D and don't use minors. In our part of the country we don't use them "cissy" chords.

I use
A                      E                  C#m                   D
for that first line, and then
E    F#m G#m A         D       C#m                   E
for the other one.

Lyrics to 2 versions of this song are given in another thread: Lyr Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan).

Not to be confused with another song with the same title written by Carter Stanley.
