Subject: RE: Chords Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan) From: GUEST,Tony Date: 20 Sep 12 - 09:34 AM quote: Ten or twelve chords? somewhat over the top I would say. I've heard that before from country western singers. They seem patriotic about the three chord maximum, as with pickup trucks and not speaking Spanish in school. I've never tried to tell them they should use more than three, but they often tell me I shouldn't. I guess I'd better not sing Schubert's Ave Maria around them. I just counted and it turns out I use 33 chords for that. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan) From: maeve Date: 19 Sep 12 - 11:44 AM Regarding Hootenanny's "...album notes indicate he was only one of three." Seems to be confirmed here: http://0-www.ibiblio.org.librus.hccs.edu/hillwilliam/BGdiscography/index.php?v=fullrecord&albumid=7988 "Song Information: 1. Wayside tavern 4:54 Composer:Peter Rowan-B. Subject: RE: Chords Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan) From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 19 Sep 12 - 11:24 AM Ten or twelve chords ? somewhat over the top I would say. I think it was Harlan Howard who defined country music as "Three Chords and the Truth", and this is one song that works very well with three. The guy on you tube above claims that Peter Rowan wrote this song but the album notes indicate the he was only one of three. Whatever, it is a great song when Peter sings it with Jerry Douglas. It needs to be sung with conviction. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan) From: GUEST,Tony Date: 18 Sep 12 - 10:36 PM If you're playing steel strings the subtlety of the minor chords would be lost anyway, except maybe the C#m. But there are also momentarily-added notes, which make other chords whose names I don't know. About 10 or 12 chords if you count those others. I write the added notes in lower case. For this song it would be something like this: A d E c# C#m (f#) D e E D E A D e A d C#m d E f# c# d A |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Wayside Tavern (Peter Rowan) From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 17 Sep 12 - 07:15 PM Isn't the Stanley Brothers song called The Girl at the Bar.? Wayside Tavern was written by B. Logan and Peggy Logan. (Tex Logan?). Peter's version with Jerry Douglas is I beleive in E. I sing it in D and don't use minors. In our part of the country we don't use them "cissy" chords. Hoot |
