You're breaking my heart! We talk about the Hull Shanty festival all the time in the Press Room Pub in Portsmouth, NH, at the Mystic Festival, and at Old Songs in Albany, NY. Hissyfit! (Hi Linda.) I'd sure like to join you all again. In the interim, my wife and I are practicing "Luckiest Sailor." Linda, is the story about your inspiration for writing this song online?

Paul

Paul,
Have you heard Hissyfit's version of 'My Sky Sailor'? It's great. It was written by Geoff Lawes of Hull and is about an American sailor who lost his life in the R38 airship tragedy on the Humber in the 1920s. Luckiest Sailor and a couple of Linda's other songs, and Sky Sailor should be coming online soon on the Yorkshire Garland website.
There are Linda's notes on the website as well.

Some information about the trawler losses of 1968

On the subject of which pubs will be open - nobody knows. There will be stuff in 'Green Bricks' and 'Ruscadors' as usual, but the feeling is that Minerva may well open for this weekend (and the next one - the start of the Round-The-World Yacht Race from Hull).

L.O. All.

Complete artistes list will be up soon on City website and Bitter end website.

Can't find anything out about the Minerva rumour yet but I will be programming it in with fingers crossed and a "plan B".

Durty Nellies has changed hands and music is not on their regular agenda now. Might be something at the festival but it's likely to be last minute.

I believe the Black Boy is shut (as of last Tuesday).

Waiting to hear about Ruscadors but hopeful.

We are expecting an old sailing Pilot Cutter "Texelstroom" over from the Netherlands for the festival and he will be doing day sailing to Grimsby - Scarborough - Whitby in the days between the end of festival and the Clipper Yacht race start. There are a few berths available.

Regards,

S.J.

I've just heard that the leaseholders of the Minerva Hotel are currently trying to sell the lease, so they won't be opening it for the Festival. If a new leaseholder takes over before September then that would of course be a possibility.

The Minerva
Below is an article pasted from 'Hull daily Mail' website 30/7/09
Mike

Real ale enthusiasts across Hull are celebrating the news that a historic city centre pub is to reopen its doors.
It is almost a year since the bell for last orders at the Minerva pub rang for the final time.
At the time members of the local Campaign for Real Ale group (Camra) marked the occasion by holding a "wake" to mourn its demise.
Dressed in black, they headed to the pub in Nelson Street and gathered around a miniature coffin to raise a drink to the much-loved venue and the happy times people had shared there.
But now they are preparing to raise their tankards in celebration as the drinking establishment will soon be serving again.
The new licensee Phil Daly, who has been in the pub trade for more than 20 years, said he was just waiting for the final stages of negotiation to be completed before preparing the pub for a grand reopening.
He said: "My hope is to have it open in the next three to four weeks, certainly before the end of August.
"I have tried my hardest to get everything sorted in time for the launch of the Clipper Race in September.
"I used to visit the Minerva and recall seeing in the paper about the fact it was going to close down.
"I tried at that point to get in touch with the right people to try and put a rescue package together, then about three months ago a friend of mine e-mailed me details about the sale of the Minerva.
"And that was it – I jumped at it feet first."

Humbersound "Groove Crew" are recruiting for 12 to 20 year olds……

Music ~ Singing ~ Filming ~ Interviewing ~ Laughing and much more……..

Humbersound are looking for more young people to join their crew and help manage and develop the Heritage "Groove Crew" Project . This will involve a series of music, singing, filming and personal skills workshops leading up to the 2009 Hull Maritime Festival (Shanty Festival). This project will investigate the musical heritage that links Hull to the sea and the cultural heritage that surrounds the city. An education package will be developed to deliver to a wider audience for future years.

These will take place predominantly at Wilberforce House which is situated in the Museum Quarter in Hull. Heritage Groove Crew will be researching into local maritime history and heritage by interviewing people and capturing their memories and stories with sound and film recording.

The project is funded by Heritage Lottery Young Routes and we would like to hear from anyone 12 to 20. If you are interested, or you know anyone who maybe, and would like further information please contact either:

Who's on which day!

Firstly a big thank you to all the organisers!
Yes it would have been nice to see the full programme online but I always buy a paper copy anyway as a souvenir and season ticket holders get one free. Now to the website - the home page gives a brief description of the festival and the dates are clearly shown. There are then links to the guest lists, camping arrangements, tourist info and even music to download for one of the workshops. The pdf of daily appearances whilst not giving details of venue and times does give anyone coming for a short time the chance to make a decision based on who is appearing that day. Whitby does not go for the BIG headliner acts so if you miss seeing someone you will almost certainly get the chance to see them again somewhere else during the week. The festival office is only open during folk week and was signposted on most routes into Whitby. Programmes were also on sale in many pubs and shops and at the tourist info office. There were some programme changes but these were publicised in the Wailer as soon as they were known and although it can be frustrating to turn up to an event that isn't happening or worse has already happened no festival of that size is going to run without some problem arising.
Let's give credit where credit is due and say thanks for a bloody fantastic week!

Certainly that nice Mr Flags and I will be happy to inspect the said licensed premises on Wednesday and report.

Unnamed GUEST (if you use a consistent guest name it helps responses): the room in Minerva isn't that big and yes it does very full. I suppose it holds about 50 people. There is usually singing in the Green Bricks and Ruscadors.

Mr Flags and I will be checking the availability of this room for Saturday night to host what we jokingly refer to as the 'Anti-Shanty'. This is available for folk who don't want to go to the official concert, and we don't insist on maritime songs (although most people who come to the festival obviously have a preference for them).

Thanks very much to all our friends who helped us have such a great time at the Festival. The Saturday Anti-Shanty was the best in living memory - not that we remember much after a really good Anti-Shanty!

Maggie's charity lucky dip provided another 150 lovely British pounds to add to the 300 we collected in Whitby. We would particularly like to thank all our folkie friends for their generosity in supporting this effort, ultimately in aid of victims of war in Bosnia.

Syntan, Sea Fever, Shellbacks, Shantys and Anti's made it a memorable weekend. Gang Van Gaalen provided their unbeatable hospitality and I want to thank Maggie for singing the wino song 'with feeling'. An altogether brilliant weekend.
Sad to hear the final Farewell Shanty from the Shellbacks... as they were decommissioned but sure we'll see and hear some of their individual voices soon enough. Wonderful to meet Susanne(skw)too.

If you're interested there will be some sung entertainment this Wednesday Sept 9th as Shanty Jack, Two old buoys (with ossonflags) and Hissyfit perambulate between the White Hart (Alfred Gelder Street), Ruscadors and Minerva singing a set in each establishment.
We'd appreciate assistance with choruses and hope to see some familiar faces.

Safe journey Mags.
