Subject: RE: So who's going to Whitby at New Year? From: Joe G Date: 08 Jan 09 - 08:36 AM We had a great time too and really nice to meet new and old friends and put faces to Mudcat names! We kept up our historic tradition of not winning anything (much to Eddy and Stuart's disgruntlement as I was on their team in the quiz) Thanks to Jude and Raggytash and everyone else who made it such a memorable return - we'll be back next year! Meanwhile hope to see some of you at Queensbury Folk Day on March 7th! We are just checking out that the outdoor camping will be available for you hardier types though we have decided that we can't provide indoor camping for this first year. Still it is only an hour or so drive from most places in the Yorks/Lancs/Durham area so do-able in a day! |

Subject: RE: So who's going to Whitby at New Year? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 08 Jan 09 - 03:49 AM Hi Noreen As you are probably aware Wombat and I set the treasure hunt, I'm glad you enjoyed it but am concerned that you had a problem with one pub. Could you please pm me with details, I don't want to start slagging any establishment off on the Mudcat but would like to know the reasoning behind your discomfort so I can judge whether or not to use the pub again next year Thanks Nick |
Subject: RE: So who's going to Whitby at New Year? From: Noreen Date: 07 Jan 09 - 02:57 PM Just want to say how much we enjoyed our first New Year in Whitby, and to thank all those who organised the various events. The treasure hunt was great fun and took us into some pubs we'd never entered before (and may not again in one case in particular...!). Lovely to see old friends again and have a good sing- a good start to the year. Thanks again all those who made it such fun! Noreen and Stewart |

Subject: RE: So who's going to Whitby at New Year? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 29 Dec 08 - 03:57 AM Fisherlads, sadly the fishing industry in Whitby as elsewhere (as I suspect you know) has undergone a massive decline. With 9 (?) trawlers, approx 25 charter boats, about 5 people on the fish key and less than 100 in the processing plants I would estimate the fishing industry employs less than 250 people in the town. The NHS employs more and the biggest industry in the town has to be tourism. A sad reflection on the state of our once proud fishing industry but true none the less |

Subject: RE: So who's going to Whitby at New Year? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 22 Dec 08 - 04:23 AM Silas, lots give at Whitby at Christine & New Year. Whitby over the years has become a retirement village for ageing folkies, there are dozens of us who have bought places here and although it is factionalised (is there such a word) we all play together at some point during the course of time. At Christmas and New Year many people come to Whitby for a holiday and several folkies are regular visitors not only at this time but throughout the year. Whitby is a small former fishing town on the east coast look it up on the web |
