Last night at our English music session at the Barge Inn, Bradford on Avon, we learned that the pub was closing on Wednesday because the pub owning company had gone bust. For us, this is perhaps becoming routine, since this is the third pub that has closed or threatened closure on us this year. Somehow we've stayed a flourishing session throughout - last night being typical with 16 musicians playing.

We're pretty certain that we should find a new home in time for the next session on 12th January, but I really don't want this to become a habit. I have this fear that landlords will run screaming from the building when they see us coming.

In Market Rasen, we have had 3 pubs totally refurbished and opened in the last 6 months.

Do it at the village hall. In 6 years I have only been in 3 premises.
The first 2 got greedy and upped the price of hire, becuase they thought they could make some money out of me. They didn't and i have been at the current village hall for about 3 years now.

From recent experiences with our session - 3 venue shifts this year - I feel that far from landlords running screaming, they're more likely to welcome music/song sessions with open arms - anything to attract more business!

I agree, which is why I'm not worrying about finding a new home. The present economic conditions have, I think, made landlords realise the advantages of having 15 or 16 people turn up twice a month on the quietest day of the week, drink lots of beer and peaceably go way again, while providing some gentle entertainment for anyone else in the pub.

However, there is an old saying which I believe has much truth in it, which goes "once is happenstance, twice is co-incidence, three timews is enemy action" ...

Blimey! Sound like Bradford is going to be as bad as Aldershot for pub closures! We've lost ten since the start of the year.

Yes, the golf course is still open and I have a surprising number of balls from it in my allotment should aynyone feel the need to come and collect them. One golf ball - 1 sq metre dug....deal?

Perhaps community centres and village halls will become fashionable again.
If you take your own booze the cost, if not the atmosphere will be commensurate.

Well, here in Marlow Bottom, (Bucks), our "parent " pub,the "TJ Reilly's", formerly "The Pegasus", which ,frankly,had become absolutely DIRE, has re-invented itself as "The Pegasus",and is now pretty damn good, to be honest !! Just off there now ,actually,for "Quiz Night" by the woodburner (very cosy !! ).
