My first grandchild was just born, and we are planning a blessing ceremony for her. Does anyone have a suggestion for a special song?
(If I don't reply for a few days it is because my daughter, the new mom, does not have internet at home.)

The choice of song largely must depend on whether you are a Christian or other religion..... perhaps you should make clear what you are looking for. Best wishes, Mike.

Hi Celtaddict!
I was once asked to sing "Forever Young" at a blessing. It worked.

Congratulations on your new grandbaby and your new role!~ What joy!

Irish Blessing (May the Road Rise to Meet You). Roger McGuinn has a musical version on his Live from Mars CD.

congrats...my first grandbaby turns 2 month tomorrow!
i would second that suggestion of forever young by Dylan..
perhaps his best song! it is like a prayer, a lullaby, and a birthday
celebration song...for young and old alike.

You might consider the old McGuire Sisters song May You Always. I loved it when I was a child.

May you always walk in sunshine

Slumber warm when night winds blow

May you always live with laughter

For a smile becomes you so

May good fortune find your doorway

May the bluebird sing your song

May no trouble travel your way

May no worry stay too long

    May your heartaches be forgotten

    May no tears be spilled

    May old acquaintance be remembered

And your cup of kindness filled

And may you always be a dreamer

May your wildest dreams come true

May you find someone to love

As much as I love you

The immediate song that sprang to mind was John Tams' 'Hush-a-Bye' from the Under One Sky suite. I've not got the lyrics handy but the 'feel' of the song strikes me as pretty appropriate. The CD's not officially out yet but there's a video from BBC Scotland here.

"Depends on wether or not you are a Christian"
If so - there is a beautiful song/hymn called "On this Child your blessing Lord" to a simple tune

Happy to post the words if you want them

here is a Sufi song

May the long time sun shine upon you
all love surround you
and the pure light within you
guide your way home

i have sung this as a funeral song, too

for passages into and out of this life

i thought it was from sufi tradition,
but a web search has it described as an irish blessing--
i wonder which is right?
in either case, it is a good wish

yes, that's it, incredible string band--"...You can hear that, too, on the song's coda adapted from a Sikh spiritual: "May the long time sun shine upon you/All love surround you/And the pure light within you/Guide you all the way on."

Always thought that Coope,Boyes & Simpson's version of 'The Dunstan Lullaby' would be most appropiate at a Christening/naming celebration.

WONDER – Natalie Merchant(from the album 'Tigerlily')
Doctors have come
from distant cities
just to see me
stand over my bed
disbelieving what they're seeing
they say I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as the can see they can offer
no explanation
newspapers ask
intimate questions
what confessions
they reach into my head
to steal the glory
of my story
they say I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as the can see they can offer
no explanation
I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
"know this child will be able"
laughed as my body she lifted
"know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she'll make her way"
people see me
I'm a challenge
to your balance
I'm over your heads
how I confound you
and astound you
to know I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as you can see you can offer me
no explanation
I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
"know this child will be able"
laughed as she came to my mother
"know this child will not suffer"
laughed as my body she lifted
"know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she'll make her way"

so on.

For Baby

I'll walk in the rain by your side,
I'll cling to the warmth your hand,
I'll do anything to help you understand
I love you more than anybody can.

And the wind will whisper your name to me
little birds will sing along in time,
leaves will bow down when you walk by
and morning bells will chime

I'll be there when you're feelin' down
to kiss away the tears if you cry,
I'll share with you all the happiness I've found
a reflection of the love in your eyes.

And I'll sing you the songs of the rainbow,
the whisper of the joy that is mine
leaves will bow down when you by
and morning bells will chime

I'll walk in the rain by your side,
I'll cling to the warmth your tiny hand,
I'll do anything to help you satisfied
I love you more than anybody can.

And the wind will whisper your name to me
little birds will sing along in time,
leaves will bow down when you walk by
and morning bells will chime

"Call Down a Blessing", which is a version (Susan/WYSIWYG tells me) of "Brendan's Shield).

This song is definitely a spirit=filled, but nondoctrinal song, and easy (and necessary) to draw the audience/congregation into. They pick up what's necessary very easily, even if they've never heard it before. Being nondoctrinal, it should work in almost any faith environment you could throw at it.

Thank you all so much for all the suggestions (and the congratulations and wishes)! I sent those that were posted before the event on to the singer. We had a marvelous family event; my elder daughter gave birth, and my younger daughter was married. Younger daughter and her groom did the readings for baby's blessing, the evening before the wedding, then elder daughter was matron of honor for younger daughter's wedding. AND, not only did the couple have both parents escort them down the 'aisle' (which was actally a mountain path, in the snow; they were married on an overlook above Lake Tahoe) but they requested that both sets of parents, and the living grandparents, renew their vows at the same ceremony. They wished to stress the importance of family and of lifelong commitment (and the three couples have a total of 115 years of marriage). I think that may be the most awesome addition to a wedding I have ever heard. Anyway, the groom's mother is a minister and did the blessing (their good friend minister did the wedding), and his brother and sister played the wedding; his sister sang for the blessing too. We had talked of planning it together, but then the minister/mom told me they would do everything as a gift to our family. Since Savannah Grace was born Dec. 22, she opened with 'The Gift' ('The nicest gift I ever got, didn't really weigh a lot...' about a Christmastime infant) and ended with a hymn type song that I am embarrassed to admit I cannot name or quote now. But the musician-sister says she will record the songs so we will have them, which will make a nice accompaniment to slide shows of the events. I had asked a couple of musician friends for their suggestions, and none had any good ideas, so I am going to pass these along and keep the list in mind. I have no doubt there will be further events in our futures, with one more just married, another to marry in the spring, and the fourth with a long-time girlfriend about whom we keep awaiting an announcement!
Thank you, all!

Hi Celtaddict...

We are planning my second son's blessing and I wondered if you could tell me who sang "The Gift." I can't find it online.

Thx!

I think I found it. It's on Barbra Streisand's A Christmas Album. There's a YouTube recording here (click).

THE BEST GIFT
Songwriter?
(as sung by Barbra Streisand)

The best gift
That I ever got
Didn't really weigh a lot
It didn't have a ribbon 'round
And it sometimes made the terrible sound
The best of all it seems to me
It wasn't neath the Christmas tree
And yet, I guess I'd have to say
That it made all the other presents twice as gay
The best gift that I've ever known
I'd always wanted most to own
Yet in my dreams of sugar and spice
I never thought it could be so nice
The best gift that I ever get
Was sometimes dry and sometimes wet
Was usually pink but oftentimes red
As it lay so innocently in its bed
The best gift of the year to me
The one I hold most dear to me
A gift that simply drove me wild
Was a tiny new born child...
